    It did how much damage?

    > You freeze the Black knight.
    > You miss the Black knight.
    > You freeze the Black knight.
    > The Black knight hits you.
    > Low hitpoint warning!
    > *** LOW HITPOINT WARNING! ***
    > The Novice rogue hits you.
    > *** LOW HITPOINT WARNING! ***
    > The Novice rogue misses you.
    > The Black knight hits you.
    > *** LOW HITPOINT WARNING! ***
    > The Black knight hits you.
    > *** LOW HITPOINT WARNING! ***
    > The Black knight hits you.
    > You die.

    On the last LOW HITPOINT WARNING, I had 41hps left, or so the display told me. I hit space for -more-, then I was dead.
    Black knight does 5d5 damage per hit.

    Did the display not update correctly? (char shows -1 hps at file dump)

    I patched my game to display my HP and the damage in the log for this reason

    Bugs related to the display not updating are in fact fairly common. So it could be this.
    Also I thought low-hitpoint warning comes only once per turn.

      I think my last char died because of this. Hellhounds breathing, I thought that I have plenty of HP left, then suddenly R.I.P.

          The point is that black knights should only be able to deal 25 damage per blow. He had (as far as he knew) had 41 HP before the final blow, took the final blow, and died.

          That strikes me as distinctly "non-legit" and an indication of display issues.

              He got hit 5 times between turns. It wouldn't be that much of a bug if the hp display is only refreshed each turn, rather than after each hit, since you will see the right value when you decide what to do.

                  It'd be nice if it refreshed when you hit a -more- prompt, to help the player gauge how much damage they're taking from individual sources. Not critical though.

                      I think that hit messages should show the exact damage. That suggestion has been refused, or at least ignored, in the past. There were multiple design decisions to hide info from the player that I never understood. I recall when my suggestion that you should notice when your weapon burns your foe was considered radical, and I was surprised by the number of people who argued against it.

                      Attitudes have changed. ID-by-use seems pretty popular. Perhaps not updating the hp counter with each hit message is a bug now.

                          I do in fact think that the whole UI (subwindows included) should update every time the game waits for player input. This includes inside menus, more prompts and so on.

                          This would avoid a lot of bugs (related to subwindow updates )that currently have strange workaround.

                          One I recently noticed, but hadn't had time to confirm: Mimics are not shown in the monster list until you attack them, or they attack you. That is good. But when you identify them, the monster list subwindow doesn't get updated until you or a monster moves.

                          It would also make setting up subwindows easier.

                            But how did the Black Knight hit me 4 times? AFIK he only has 3 attacks per turn.
