Where Are All The *Identify* scrolls?

I have a level 42 Gnome Mage and I'm about 4600' deep. Anyway, my home is full of artifacts, and other than the spellbooks and one scroll of *identify*, I am carrying more artifacts - and I'm at capacity as there is simply no more room.

I've played the game many times and I always keep whatever artifacts I find until I can *identify* them and then just keep what I think I need and sell the rest. The problem this time is, there are no *identify* scrolls. I've kept the one in hopes of making it easier to find others amongst the ruins (i.e. stacking). But there just aren't any - and I need about twenty. Any suggestions? Thank you.

In the current versions, what he says is exactly correct - they are nowhere (no longer exist) and are everywhere (functionality now covered by regular Identify).

I believe the remainder of the post means he is just screwing around.

Sounds like you've just been unlucky. I don't think anyone would look down on you checking out some artifact spoilers to figure out what your stuff does, much like we don't worry if you decide to cheat to get full monster knowledge. Veterans have already largely memorized them anyway; it's generally been my opinion that any information that carries over from one game to another ought to be trivially available in-game.

Yeah, it seems to have come down to luck. The thing is, I've been playing for years and I generally play the same way (gnome mages), but I don't think I've ever seen those scrolls so non-existent. As I said, at some point I have to narrow the artifacts down to what I'm going to need at the end. And without the *identify* scrolls, I don't know how to do that?

Anyway another thing I should mention is that, as I've said I'm currently at 4600' and I've even got some artifacts down here. My character is awesome (so far) and I've been able to mana storm and rift several uniques and the booty I've gotten has been piling up a bit. One thing I learned a while ago is, if there is a pile of "stuff" that I want to go through quickly, I'll just mana storm it, and whatever remains I keep and try to *identify*. Of course that is why I keep one scroll of *identify* on hand - so that I can hopefully easily find more of them. But as I said, this time there hasn't been any more. Now I feel like my character is stuck. I don't want to just start leaving things behind that I know are good - and that I might need later. So I'm not sure what to do?

As I said, read the spoilers. Assuming you aren't playing with random artifacts (I don't remember if 3.0.6 even has that option), the artifacts are always the same from one game to the next. For example, the gloves "Cambeleg" always give +2 to STR and CON and free action, while the cloak "Colluin" always gives resistance to acid, electricity, fire, cold, and poison, and activates for temporary resistance to all of those. It's not as convenient as being able to 'I'nspect your items in-game, but it gets you the information you need to make your equipment decisions.

I would usually find several *identify* scrolls after clearing a dragon pit in 3.0.6. Other than that, like you, I recall them showing up just frequently enough to always have one on hand.
                      You are on something strange

on http://rephial.org there are the changelogs for all the versions of angband. I did a quick search starting from 3.0.6, trusting Derakon's memory, but I found nothing about *identify* scrolls. OTOH there is not changelog for version 3.0.7s, as you can see:

so the change could have been there. Anyone who played that version can confirm this?

They aren't nearly common enough for divers. Forget all the artifacts -- I didn't even find enough *ID to check egos with random extras such as elvenkind armors in the old days.

I don't remember whether this will work, but you could edit lib/edit/object.txt and change the depth and rarity information, so that many more drop. Then remove object.raw, maybe that was in lib/data? If it doesn't help this game, at least it will help next game.

In description to version 3.0.3 there are words about *identify*. In the later versions there is no information about canceling replacing *identify* by simple identify.

However I also have home full of un*identified* items and I haven't seen this scroll.
Or this scrolls became extremely rear, or where this rumors did come from?

                              What does it means?
Identification now depends on spellcaster level or scroll power? Or dice?
