An early potion of poison or surprise can still kill your @ pretty fast, but I think there is a vast consensus that the change to id-by-use is a great improvement over the old carry and wait for id by time, or by magic. Just like there is a vast consensus that no-selling is a huge improvement. After one play through, most people are convinced.
“We're more of the love, blood, and rhetoric school. Well, we can do you blood and love without the rhetoric, and we can do you blood and rhetoric without the love, and we can do you all three concurrent or consecutive. But we can't give you love and rhetoric without the blood. Blood is compulsory. They're all blood, you see.”

Hah, I'm clearly in the minority - I always play with selling on. I feel like it gives me more opportunity to improve my gear in the earlier parts of the game. A level 2-9 $15K Arcane Control spell book that is otherwise useless to a warrior goes a long way to that ring of damage in the black market.

I've been playing more lately, seems to be going well. Hovering at 1600-1650', not finding very many stat potions. Int is at the point of 0% spell failure finally though. And while resists are not fully covered, I have the basics plus nexus, disenchant, light, dark, blindness, free action. Still missing spellbook 4, though I do have 5 (Tome of Power).

The current level is 9-7 with a vault with the permanent stone walls except for a couple tiles. The Emperor Quylthulg is in there, wildly out of depth. It keeps summoning nasties faster than I can teleport them away, so I don't think I'll be able to teleport it away and loot that side of the vault. The other side had the Shield of Celegorm, sadly not an upgrade over my Shield of Elvenkind. I expect there's probably another artifact on Mr. Q's side, if only I could get to it.

Are there any tricks I could pull to get in there? I'm about to hit level 33, so banishment is kind of close but not there yet, and I think it doesn't work on uniques anyway. With a !speed I can get to +10 speed, which is not remotely enough to teleport-other my way to Mr. Q.

I also encountered Gorlim a few levels ago, less far out of depth. His spells take a lot more off me than mine do off of him, though. Seems like a wait and level type of situation, try again when I have more speed and/or mana bolt or something.

Should I start pushing a little bit deeper? I've read that 1600ish is the sweet spot for stat potions, even though I'm not seeing very many at all...
