An early potion of poison or surprise can still kill your @ pretty fast, but I think there is a vast consensus that the change to id-by-use is a great improvement over the old carry and wait for id by time, or by magic. Hah, I'm clearly in the minority - I always play with selling on. I feel like it gives me more opportunity to improve my gear in the earlier parts of the game.
