I found a brigandine armor of Elvenkind on a very early level in Sangband, but it was too heavy, and by the time I had enough strength to wear it without being slow, I had better armor.

Many of these things aren't out of depth, just not common, especially at low dls.
The most common extreme out-of-depth thing to find is dungeon books, most have which have rarity 1. (Except Wrath--that's a genuinely rare find.)
Something like MHDSM or BaDSM is a truly rare find.Comment

When my son was about ten, he started playing Angband. Not long after, he came to me and said "What's Balance Dragon Scale Mail?". Dropped by Bolg at about 800'. This was *after* finding a RoS(+11) at about 600' with an earlier character. I'm yet to have a find to rival either of these. One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne

The most OOD monster I saw was The Lernaean Hydra at very shallow depth in Sangband. there was no way I could damage it let alone killed, I think I saw it latter in game.My first legit winner http://angband.oook.cz/ladder-show.php?id=5114Comment

What version of Sangband was that? I don't think the Lernaean Hydra is in the current version. In fact I'm pretty sure Sangband doesn't have hydras at all.
I just found a Necronomicon (native to DL 95) on DL 58. Doesn't really compare with those DSMs, but it came as quite a surprise as I've never found one of last spellbooks before the 90s before.Comment

I found Great Checkerboard Vault at 250' once. Of course that wasn't serious game and I was experimenting with debug-mode created The One Ring at that time.
I have seen BoS +12 at Armorer. RDSM at dlvl 150' or something like that. Found BoS +1 (before fractional speed system) at dlvl 1. Holy Avenger dagger (+15,+15) (+4) dropped by battle scarred veteran. BalanceDSM at stat-gain (When chaos resist still gave immunity to confusion effect). Ringil many times before stat-gain. RoS dropped by some orcs before 1000'. And of course Wrath of God before stat-gain playing mage and Raal's when playing priest.
My best "woot" moment is still the one when I found Feanor, but that might have something to do with the fact that I had been playing this game for nearly two decades before finding them...
Right next to that would be the one case when I found *two* GCV:s in same level.Comment

That reminds me that I've seen Maggot drop red DSM. I've also seen him drop a dagger (+4) HA, which was almost equally awesome. Both were times when he appeared before I'd ever entered the dungeon, making the drops even more amazing."Been away so long I hardly knew the place, gee it's good to be back home" - The BeatlesComment

Gad Zooks! Playing NetAngband, just got a superb feeling on DL1. Found a Rod of Acid Balls (125 damage/33% failure rate/27 turn recharge), something powerful that I can actually use! Now I may have to 'play to win', rather than my original plan of 'just screw around for a while'. If only there were tileswww.mediafire.com/buzzkill - Get your 32x32 tiles here. UT32 now compatible Ironband and Quickband 9/6/2012.
