Inconsistency in exp granted from monster kills

Does this need to be fixed? Wolf of Sauron has 2200 hitpoints, and breathes nether and darkness and summons as well. Very dangerous adversary, but gives like 5X less exp points than Faenorian(sp) Rider which has 1200 hitpoints and by the time I'm fighting them are pretty safe/easy. There's other inconsistencies in exp from monsters, but I can't think of them right now.

I think I recall that Storm Giants also don't give enough exp (they do 310 damage storms among other things).

I tend to see this sort of variance as a feature rather than a bug, but I'm open to tweaking things if people feel strongly enough about it.

I think some midlevel uniques give a really low amount of experience. For example: Lorgan which can obliterate characters at 1800ft giving barely more experience than a magma elemental which can be oneshotted feels really wrong. Another obvious example: at 2050ft, who would you consider fighting... Gorlim or a Master Lich? Well one of them is "no fucking way till 3k+" while the other one is more than manageable. But the lich gives more experience...

Another inconsistency I noticed: Native depth of DL69, the new Giant unique gives less experience than the one native to DL60. And the one native to DL60 is also more dangerous. (It's possible I misremember, but I think this is something worth looking into). If it's intentionally like this, I'm curious as to why. I'm also curious how inconsistency to experience given from monsters is a feature. edit: I mean, I guess it's interesting to have monsters that are to be avoided vs monsters that are good for seeking out for experience or drops, but maybe it feels a little bit heavy handed in its current implementation?

Experience doesn't really equate to difficulty. It cannot. If you have fire immunity, red dragons are easier than their white dragon counterparts.

Once you have a system where things increase exponentially, you should assume the basic mechanic is broken. IMO the right method is 1 point for each monster type for the first one you kill. I.e. you do something new, you have experienced something. You kill something 10 times and it is boring and not a new experience. This eliminates the "grind for experience" playstyle. I think that is a good thing, though from previous discussions I know this is a minority opinion.

Sil does basically this. Have you ever tried it? I'd be interested in your opinions if you have or ever do.

I tried Sil once, but it was a bad time in my life and I didn't really give it a fair shot. I've pretty much given up roguelikes these days. As to the experience mechanic, I played with it and enjoyed it for a year or three in my own proof-of-concept change pack I released as 3.a.0.
