Here is the output I get when "I"nspecting your wielded dagger:
      Code:
      A Dagger (1d4) (+0,+0)
      (bought in a store)

A short two-edged blade perfect for thrusting.

      Combat info:
      2 blows/round.
      Average damage/hit: 4.5.

Clears rubble in 18 turns, magma veins in 400 turns, and doesn't affect quartz
      veins.
That looks fine to me. What's the problem we're looking for?

Oh I know what he's talking about. I hit ~ self knowledge once wielding a dagger and found "Your weapon burns your enemies" Ecstatic, I went to the nearest baddie, tapped him so the dagger would identify and died when it didn't. Don't have the savefile anymore, obviously. I thought the dagger had been fully identified, as it said (+0,+0). This was awhile ago. I don't think you'll find anything on the dagger, try self-knowledge instead.

Were you wearing a Ring of Flames at the time? That will do it!

Got it - thanks both. It's another wrinkle introduced by the addition of BRAND_FIRE to torches. The self_knowledge function doesn't note where the brand comes from. Thanks for the report - I think the simplest thing to do is remove self_knowledge completely, since the potions have gone and the new ID system renders it unnecessary. I'll check with Takkaria.

I was about to report a possible bug with wand activation, but after 34 attempts to aim a brass wand I finally succeeded. Turned out to be a wand of acid balls on dlevel 5.

Also, yay for there being a new version when I come back from an Anghiatus. I like the changes to the ID system and inspection of weapons.

I think this is a different bug.

There really ought to be different flags for "this item has foo" vs "this item provides foo to others". If a ring with BRAND_FIRE brands your sword, then a torch with the same flag should brand your sword as well. How would you interpret a phial with BRAND_FIRE flag?

Well, until the introduction of branded rings, the only things that ever had brands were things which actually touched monsters (melee weapons and ammo). Ring brands changed that conceptually, but not in the code - it was simply a few extra lines when working out applicable slays/brands. But self_knowledge was forgotten - it didn't matter for rings branding melee weapons because the text still makes sense, but it does matter for Cubragol and Bard.

So yes, you could open a new ticket for separating brand-self and brand-other, and that would be distinct from what to do about self_knowledge. But note that self_knowledge needs rewriting (or removing) whether you do that or not.

                      Rephial Has Gone 404 Compliant

                      (*delurk*)

Sorry to break into the middle of discussion (I couldn't find a more current, relevant thread on "Vanilla", in a reasonable time), but rephial.org seems to have gone "404-compliant" (I get the impression this may have happened before).

I was able to access the release zipfile for Windows directly, in case that's of any help in diagnosis. Good luck!

Oil has gone nuclear. I killed a novice warrior throwing a single flask in 1591. I guess it is 3 * (2d6) damage, more than a +9 shortbow. Is it really meant to be this powerful?

                          Finally, a return to form:

                          1. Go to General Store.
                          2. Buy Oil.
                          3. Kill Mogoth.

                          Short Bow (x2) (+9,+9) firing Arrow (1d4) (+0,+0) = (2.5 ammo avg + 9 launcher bonus) * 2 launcher multiplier = 23 damage.

                          Oil = 7 thrown avg * 3 brand multiplier = 21 damage.

Unless something else was changed, they should do about the same. I'd be happy as long as oil does at least as much as an unenchanted long bow, namely 2.5 ammo avg * 3 launcher multiplier = 7.5 damage.

What if they did 2d3 fire branded? That'd be 12 vs normal mobs, and 4 vs fire-resistant mobs.

1d4 * 3 is about what they used to do, and is equal to unenchanted longbow.

Throwing a vial of oil wouldn't make it explode unless some part of it were already on fire, like a Molotov Cocktail. Without the fire, the !Oil would just do normal breaking glass damage.

Though it would make that target susceptible to fire damage thereafter.

I've always wondered about that, actually. I guess oil spontaneously bursts into flame upon impact in the Angband world. I suppose it could be argued that you use your light source to light it first, but what if you're using the Arkenstone, Phial or Star?

Torches and lanterns also seem to spontaneously conflagrate when you "equip" them (how do characters hold their torches when they're also wielding a weapon and shield?).

We could get into the oddities of the dungeon ecosystem as well, but this is all for another thread. Gotta love this crazy Angbandian world of ours.
