New 2 *band style games and loving it

Hi as the title states im a newbie 2 angband and loving life.
heres a bit of info about me as im new around here.

21 year old SWF from New Zealand.
Big Playstation fan
been playing Angband now for 6 weeks after been told about it by a ex player when i expressed my hunger for good rpg type games and the lack of depth in any of the maintream rpgs out there.

And yes im hooked already!

Heres a short rundown of my time in angband so far.

1st 4 weeks had sum fun exploring this great game and taking my time clearing each dungeon lvl b4 moving on. average @ lvl b4 death in this time was lvl 10 and my top @ was lvl 32 when he died 1800 feet down after 1.5 mill turns

then my luck changed and i found this site
after much reading of old forums i went back 2 the dungeons with a new style of play.... Run away and dive, dive, dive

So the past 2 weeks have seen a big change in my @s life span.
now i can say with a big smile that my average @s lvl is about 20
and my best @ so far died at lvl 41 3750 feet down afte 500k turns

sorry about the long 1st post but im almost done and will get 2 my reason for posting

1st just wanting 2 say thanks for all the great tips and advice in these forums and for such a great site

2nd i have my 2 main tips for doing well in angband...

RUN AWAY & DIVE lol

would love ppl 2 post their own tips here

To go from 1.5M turns at dl36 to 500k turns @dl75 is a fantastic progression - in two weeks you've increased your diving speed sixfold. Nicely done.

Beware diving too fast though. Last night I lost a character at dl57 or so because I was just too deep to kill anything. I still don't know how to tell whether I'm diving too fast, and how to slow it down, but I know that it's unhealthy.

Welcome to Angband. Eye candy will never be the same again.

@ magnate... yes i sumtimes do dive a bit 2 fast and die but i learn new things about new monsters each time and i must confess that my best @ got so deep so fast because of 2 lucky finds, boots of speet +8 at 1800 feet and just a few mins later i killed the queen ant 1950 feet down and she dropped Ringil!!! (yes i know i will never get that lucky again and may never see ringil again)

@ nick LMAO thats great and how i try 2 play.... but still get the odd case of kill fever followed by the words you die. lol

Such wisdom in so short a time! That's all you really need to know. The rest is just practice.

I've written up a couple of games where I described in depth how I played. Perhaps you will find a tidbit or two of use if you have the patience to read them.

lol thanks but most of it is wisdom i stole from these forums.

That's all you really need to know. The rest is just practice.

so true. im still in what i call scout mode, just trying 2 get as deep as i can each game 2 learn about all the new monsters i have never seen. i still only know 73 of the uniques. but learning more with each new @

lol im sure most of us feel inferior 2 PowerDiver

but its a good tip on how you should feel in the dungeon!
i find the more confident i feel the faster i die lol so feeling inferior is good for your @

tell me about it i have the same problem. im still trying 2 get over my old habbits from Playstation rpgs where you kill everything you meet lol

just lost a lvl 28 @ 2200 feet down 2 Adunaphel the Quite not 100% sure about what happened... tried my wand of teleport other it used a charge but did not send her away... so i tried a 2nd time and again it used a charge but did not send her away and thats when her nether bolt finished me off

so any1 know what happened? i have a feeling she might have been in a wall at the time... so was that why my wand didnt work?

i know arrows wont go in2 a wall that a monster is in(but swords do) but why not magic(her magic came out the wall)

Yes, that would have been it. To make it worse, they can cast at you from in a wall.

so next time it will be teleport lvl, not teleport other lol

edit 2 add... i should have just teleport lvl after the 1st teleport other didnt work... but die and learn is the way it goes lol
