reactions to changes in new V release

My first reaction is that it's going to be really annoying getting used to the new pickup and shop interface, and taking so much time in shops 'cause I have to be extra careful not to accedently buy or sell something I don't want to buy or sell. Anyway, I won't mind those things once I do get used to them, but I don't understand the reason for the change.

Why does it automatically squelch summon monster scrolls? I didn't tell it to do that. I use those scrolls sometimes.

Also, the monsters act differently, that group of jackels won't follow me out into the hallway. That's going to make orcs and other things that come in groups significantly nastier, 'cause it's a lot harder to make sure you fight only one at a time.

I just noticed something else, why are hallways appearing as lit when they're not lit? That's going to be confusing, because I don't know where I'm able to see and where I'm not able to see. Can I change this? I've seen those options about remembering grids, but I couldn't tell exactly what they do. EDIT: nevermind, I figured out how to fix that.

hmm, I haven't found any noticable changes that I actually like, maybe I'll go back to the previous version.

one more thing I just noticed: I can't figure out how to autoinscribe?

[EDIT:] Okay, I did find one minor change that I like and that's that torches & lamps don't get used up in the town in daytime. BTW, does the general store not stock lanterns anymore?

It makes the UI more consistent, useable by the mouse, and it makes dealing with items on the floor much easier if you have the right options set. Using the store previously required a ridiculous number of keypresses to buy an item; that's down to two in the simple case now.

That's been fixed now, in a way. Looks like I need to add another option.

Also, the monsters act differently, that group of jackels won't follow me out into the hallway. That's going to make orcs and other things that come in groups significantly nastier, 'cause it's a lot harder to make sure you fight only one at a time.
Then change your monster AI options. The defaults have just changed; the functionality was always there.

Read the changelog. Use the object knowledge screens, accessible by "~". Type '{' on an object entry to autoinscribe it.

The GS doesn't stock lanterns anymore. Torch radiuses are also larger than before when the torch is well-fuelled. Annoyingly, I forgot to mention all this in the changelog, so thanks for the headsup.

So the game is unbeatable now? Step 1 and 2 of "go to General Store, buy Latern, kill Morgoth" are impossible now.

I wish I was in a mood for humour at the moment. I was about to write an angry reply as soon as I saw "So the game is unbeatable".

Maintaining well-played games just isn't something that's good for your blood pressure...

          [QUOTE]

Which option do I change to put it back the way it was?

Sorry about the harsh critisism. I should not have written the message in that tone of voice. Most of the changes I mentioned are just things that will be annoying at first, but I can get used to them after awhile. And the ones I most disliked are ones I can change back with options, so they're no big deal.

Anyway thanks for advancing Angband (and answering nicely to the first message of this thread.).

oh yeah, one more thing, the =g inscription to pick arrows back up isn't working, is this is bug?

            hit =1f[enter]
that will set the option to auto pick up any items you already have in your inventory like arrows

They're birth options now, I'm afraid, but it's the birth option "birth_ai_packs".

Yeah, but you may want to use the pickup_inven option to more generally always pickup items that match those in your inventory.

Well, step 1 is still doable - you can still go to the General Store

                Now the plan is:
Step 1: Go to general store.
                Step 2: ????
Step 3: PROFIT! Er, I mean, KILL MORGOTH!

                --Homsar

P.S. I think it's kind of cool that the GS no longer sells lanterns. Just as long as the town shops still sell !CCW, I'll be ok...

Fortunately, a lantern can still be bought in the Rare Items Shop. Edit your To-Do lists accordingly...

I haven't played Angband in over two years, come back into the fold and first thing I see is a new release! I like a lot of it, but I have a few issues and all I can think is I'm doing something wrong:

                    1) In the old versions, if you dumped your macros to your preferences file, they'd be there across deaths. This doesn't seem to be working here. I run the game, make a mage, setup macros, die, and when I load the character file, the macros aren't there. Loading preferences from = isn't doing this either.

                    2) Is there a way to turn off 'enter pulls up a help screen'? It's really annoying me.

Thanks for the work, even though I'll have to get used to these changes.

You can macro Enter to " " (space).

But you can't change that after birth, can you? I thought I read in the 3.0.8 release thread that birth options can only be changed at the start of the game (I assumed at character creation).

OT: The last time I played Angband was in 2003 on something like version 2.9.x. This new version (I just D/L'd 3.0.9) is a great step forward. Many of the things I found tedious about playing Angband have been addressed. I loaded my old character from then, and she still works.

Thanks for all your hard work.

Indeed. I was just pointing out that now the option's set, there's no changing it with this character.

Something I have observed; is there *always* exactly one cloak in the GS now, when you start the game? Every char I've played in 3.0.8pr1-3.0.9final seems to have had it that way. Sooo....

                            You sold a Broken Sword (1d2) (-2,-4) {average} (j) for 1 gold.
                            The shopkeeper howls in agony!
You say "Dude, the clue is in the name...".

There is always one cloak, yes. Indeed, the entire contents of the GS is identical every game, apart from the quantities of items.
