    is this a vault?

And if so, what do I do with it? There's no searchable door where I'm at and it says the wall is permanent rock.

Yes, that's a vault. That vault is completely surrounded by permanent rock, except in one or two places around the edge. If you want to explore inside it, you have to dig around the outside until you find a soft spot. (If you really wanted to know, you could probably look in lib/edit/vault.txt - it will show you where the entrances are.)

It's probably best to leave it alone unless you're sure you can handle anything inside it. Out of depth monsters are common in vaults (but so it out of depth treasure).

Another method is to change visuals so that permanent wall is a different character or tile. That's what I do, saved in a .prf file.

The low tech way is to go into targeting mode, and move the cursor over each wall. That will also tell you permanent vs granite.

There are fonts available here designed to make this easy and natural (among other things). Here is an example (from FAangband, where I also have permanent rock and granite different in the standard .prf files):
One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.

            That white hurts my eyes.
One thing that annoyed me in FA, I seemingly had to manually reload the .prf to change this each time.

              That feels like cheating somehow.

(But don't ask me how looking up edit files isn't cheating...)

I feel that would be more like spoilering than cheating.

I might possibly agree except for the targeting thing. It is clear to the player in multiple ways, so showing it obviously is just superior UI rather than abuse. Why not save the player from manually scrolling the cursor all over?

I see your point. Is this better?

If the .prf file is the same name as the character, it should reload automatically - I'll check that.

Yes, I'm with Eddie on this one. Making permanent walls obvious seems to me to be in the same spirit as making an item list window (to pick a random example )

Regarding spoilering for vaults or other things, I don't consider these cheating. It is just providing you with the knowledge that you would learn over time but you can instead learn now.

Agreed. It helps that I'm the item list patch author.
