    Looking for tips for necromancer

I'm new to Angband and want to play the necromancer class. Looking for some tips regarding stat distribution during character creation, item choices and playstyle.

So far most of my experience is facerolling with half-troll blackguard, so playing a(n apparently extra difficult) caster is new to me.

First off - stat distribution: (Note that my race choice is kobold mostly for RP reasons) Which initial stat distribution would you suggest? In my first runs I selected 12 starting strength, though I didn't realize it would be reduced to 8 by class+race choice, so I was constantly overencumbered and at 0.5-0.7 speed.
    - How much strength do you suggest for a caster character? Also I read in another post that you will use mostly melee with the vampire/warg forms late game, so maybe this is a factor?
    - Do I need wisdom/dexterity at all?
    - Is it recommendable to max out intelligence?
    - How much constitution?
My current character has STR16, INT17, WIS10, DEX13, CON13 (after factoring in class+race bonuses/defecits). Seems OK though my spells seem to fail quite frequently in the low levels.

    Secondly, item choices:
    - Should I prefer ranged weapons in general? Do you need STR to properly use these or another stat like DEX?
    - Should I avoid heavier armor and weapons? Generally I just pick up the stuff with the best stats/enchantments, but maybe this is part of what made me constantly overencumbered in past runs... I also read in some guide from an earlier version of Angband that with the right STR/DEX you could get up to 3 hits per turn, but from what I have seen you only get 1-1.3 anyways, so not sure if preferring lighter weapons is worth it other than the weight?

    Finally, some playstyle questions.
    - So far I have mostly been clearing almost every mob on each floor, just trying to avoid stuff that is very likely to kill me or damage my equipment. I read in some guide it's better to avoid most mobs, and dive deeper for better loot. I found myself getting quickly overwhelmed by enemies around dungeon level 10 or so though, even with a higher level necromancer. How do you recommend playing the early game on this class? Try to get some good gear with resistances etc. from lower level drops/shops before delving deeper? What to fight, what to skip?
    - On necromancer skills: When to use Bat Form? Sneaking around undetected at high speed? Is it recommended to use Create Darkness often when fighting in bright rooms?

INT for spellcasting, STR for not getting burdened, CON for hitpoints - probably in that order to start with, as the CON effect on your HP doesn't really kick in until you start increasing your stats.

Having a ranged weapon is good (bow and arrow tends to be best for the weight), and a light melee weapon for killing easy stuff. You want to be keeping distance from monsters as much as possible in the early game, so look for light armour and prioritise resistances and other properties over AC.

General advice on playstyle is to fight things you can beat; necros start out with Nether Bolt which is bad against evil (and useless against undead), so stick to non-evil as much as possible early. The most important necro-specific thing is that light increases your spell failure rate, so always be in the dark, even if it means casting Create Darkness constantly.

      Thanks for the advice Nick.

Would you say leaving WIS and DEX at the lowest value is preferable then, or is it good to have a few points in them as well?

About the spell failure in the light: When the spell tome is opened (e.g. m a), does the Fail% displayed there reflect the *actual* fail chance given light conditions, or the fail chance in "optimal" (dark) conditions?

Another thing I forgot to ask in the OP: How can I add a shortcut for casting certian spells, e.g. clicking 1 instead of m a a? Wrists don't like spamming maa' so much.

You can make keymaps by pressing =

Then pick a command letter of your choice and command line maa*t. This automatically casts nether bolt at closest enemy.

Buy flasks of oil and throw them at tougher early enemies. This makes a necromancer start a lot easier. If you find a well enchanted sling or shortbow, you can ditch the oil flasks.

That's = then e to mess with keymaps. Don't forget to save them to a file to be autoloaded each time you play, which could be based on char name or class, e.g. I have a Rogue.prf file in ~/.angband/Angband

If you get lucky early on buy any enchanted shots you can afford. Those are better than oil and are reusable.

Perhaps if you are new maybe the hardest class and hardest race should be avoided, more so if you combine them ..
