I'll start. When I first started playing Angband nearly 30 years ago I didn't realize the rest command existed. Instead I would run back and forth along the dungeon to recover HP/SP. I remember thinking, there's got to be a better way.
What's the dumbest thing you didn't know about?

Didn't know about how stacking temporary + equipment resistance to fire/cold prevents inventory destruction.Comment

that there's a 'fire at nearest monster' command...
and that you can look up what's in your home when you're in the dungeon.Comment

Was the mechanic changed at some point? I'm certain having double resistance to fire/cold prevents your consumables from being destroyed by those elements. Double resistance to acid doesn't protect your stuff, not sure about lightning.Comment

It may have been different in the past - I don't precisely recall - but immunity has always been required for complete safety. Otherwise it's not prevention, but more resistance helps. At 60 or more damage after allowing for resistance an item has a 3% chance of destruction, and if its less than 60 it scales down proportionally. One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne

Checked v4 source, you're right - double resist no longer stops inventory destruction. It does that in earlier versions and their offshoots, though - for example, it's very relevant in Heng variants.
Oddly enough, according to source code, double resistance to acid should protect inventory destruction, but I think I recall having by staves melted by acid under double resist in Heng variants. Armor still can get damaged by acid with double resistance, though you will take reduced damage from acid if it damages your armor.Comment

If I'm reading the source right, acid also destroys staves and scrolls, along with damaging equipment; in earlier versions, as I can recall, it also destroyed staves and scrolls, but it also outright destroyed vulnerable equipment in your backpack (according to source, it only damages equipment in your inventory now).Comment

There are apparently no karmic consequences for killing Farmer Maggot.
Slow Monster is king. Stun Monster is queen.
Hoard potions of Restore Life Levels, Healing potions, Staves of Teleportation, Rods of Mapping, Rods of Slow Monster, Rods of Speed, armor and weapons with resistances/buffs in your home.
Throwing things is useful in early game. Just throw whatever you have. Keep any pointy thing you find (spears, daggers, rocks) to get you through the first 10 levels.
You can use items that are lying on the ground even if you don't have room in your inventory.Comment
