    Angband Rand artifact speedrun 3hrs 31mins

    Started 7.47 pm, finished 11.18pm!
    3hrs31mins!

    High Elf Mage.
    Rand artifacts.

    31 uniques killed.

    My goal here was... get a time under 4 hrs... and Im done with the speed runs.
    The graveyard says it took about 20 attempts! About 2/3rd make it to the end game... just not fast enough. Previous best was 4hrs 10mins.

    The strategy is simply.... you dive hard and dont stop!
    That moment where youre thinking 'its unsafe to be below 2000ft without resist poison..... ignore that.

    Artifact ring of speed +10 at 1650 ft was a big help here.

    Never fight uniques unless you can kill them quick and easy.
    Never fight a monster unless its worth it for the experience.

    To finish the game u need to be lucky in finding Wizards Tomb of Power and Arcane controls by about level 35. Banishment essential.

    You NEED dimension door.... else it just takes too long to dive.

    You NEED clone monster. I went from level 36 to 50 by SHAMELESSLY farming skull drujs in a corridor. Took about 10 mins! (and this was after farming hand druj to get from level 32-35)

    This is one of the few times Ive finished the game without ever finding an immunity.

    I got under 4 hrs.... with a LOT of effort.

    Ive got no plans to try to better it!

      Congrats! Very cool. But also a bit

      I find it interesting that you used 2X as many turns resting as you did moving and fighting. If you hadn't rested so much you'd have gotten a good turncount as well!

        Resting takes zero time. Playing without resting takes more careful gameplay--it'd be hard to do it in the same elapsed time.

          Yep, there's more than one way to play "optimally", which is probably why no attempt to have a sensible scoring system has ever really worked.

            I very much prefer real time over turncount. Never liked the artificial turn reducing measures like browsing shops from afar or buying out shops to refresh them.

            Resting taking zero real time is exactly what I love most about angband - skipping the part that is boring for the player. Other games have to manage player downtime; angband has solved this problem like no other game.

            Turncount play may be more tactical; I dont care, I want to relish in free resting.

                Or have multiple rankings you can flip between on the high score screen. "Fastest win", " most xp", "grizzliest death" (order by most negative hit points)...

                    It should be possible to measure the real time played that way, no ? Start counting when the specific @ is loaded, stop counting when the game stops running.

                      ....okay... I know I said I was done with speed running..... but had a LOT more attempts at getting the time down and though I would share :-)

                      Getting it under 4 hrs is so damn hard.

                      For only the second time ever I got it under 4 hrs (3hr50min).
                      This was after 20 or so attempts.


                      You gotta get the morgoth killing kit together, which for a mage is:
                      +30 base speed. Usually a ring of speed +10 or better and good boots of speed.

                      Arcane control you need early. Without dimension door its impossible to dive quickly.
                      Basically, detect doors and stairs... teleport to stairs.

                      Resist nether

                      Enough constitution to get over 600hp


                      .........
                      Early game you dive as hard as you can till about 500ft, kill bullroarer, and return to surface to pick up 2nd n 3rd spell books, maybe again to pick up magic mapping, stone to mud and teleport.
                      Free action by about 1000ft, resistance shortly afterwards.
                      Poison resist you need by ~2000ft... then you gotta get up to level 35! Thats always the tough grind. Most my char. get lost here.

                      If you are lucky you find a hand druj, which are easy to kill with fire, and clone them up in a corridor to get to about level 40. After this hand drujs simply arnt worth the effort.

                      Once you have Arcane control, you can dimension door to stairs and dive quickly. Skull druj is what you are after. This will get you to level 50 the quickest.

                      Once you have level 50 (or close to), you basically dive to Morgoth.

                      Curiously in this game, I never found a staff of speed, and so had to kill morgoth using potions of speed.

                      Typically the fewer uniques you kill the quicker your time. In this case it was 24!
