    Aww. *sadface*

Mostly it's a desire to have rooms 'for me'... as I studiously ignore the Smithing skill and always have a disappointed kick at an enchanted forge when I stumble across one.

I also love getting deeper into the dungeon when more of the designed rooms show up (labyrinths, prisons, mini-vaults, all that stuff). It just seems more Interesting somehow.

Yes, but a library that everyone could read from? Even the Naugrim and Edain?

To prevent the library from being abused, it should have the Lore-master ability up to THREE times max.

Encouraging the player to drag a bunch of items from all over the level to a particular room would be terrible.

It's a trade-off between wanting to *ID* special items vs. beating the clock.

Sure, but it's a Brogue style tradeoff:
-Brogue has limited inventory, but also a way to throw items to lower levels by tossing them off cliffs or leaving them somewhere where you can haul them down in extra, short trips.
-Brogue has limited identification, but a potion 'detect magic' that detects the bless/curse status of EVERYTHING on you and the entire level. So you're encouraged to haul in such a way that the usage of detect magic, especially your first un-ID'd detect magic, is maximized.

These tactics are so powerful that it's worth it to sacrifice a little time to do it. So the food clock for Brogue got tightened up extremely. The clock in Sil is tight but I don't think quite so tight that people wouldn't be 'forced' to maximally utilize free Loremaster to play optimally. I think it should be 1d3 (or whatever) identifications, not 1d3 Loremasters, so you don't feel like you have to haul everything into the room from the whole floor.

They're already in the game with some extra features: they are called "Staves of Understanding".

Reference librarian to the rescue! Ahem, only very quiet players can use the library... no trumpets and/or heavy squeaky armor. You may be accosted by beggars and feral children and people tripping balls. Everything you might actually need is probably already stolen, or horribly misshelved. If you don't understand LOC call numbers, good luck to you, because the librarian can't be bothered to get off the stool. Remember to have fun in the library!

Perhaps two libraries, one that not everybody *can* read from, ie: perception check to id (high success), detect curses (low success) or do nothing on failure. In any of those cases, significant time is burned...

Then another one that not everybody *should* read from. It works every time, but you have to pass a will check to avoid some kind of nasty side effect. Stat drain, perhaps? Summon a not particularly friendly librarian/guardian? Something else of that nature?. Thematically, I'm thinking something vaguely like the nasty effects of the palantir for this one. And each time you use it, the difficulty of the will check and the degree of penalty for failure both increase...

Could the library simply be guarded by something moderately nasty and/or unrewarding to fight? The idea being that the player would have to decide just how badly they want access to it.

What's not moderately nasty and unrewarding about a reference librarian?

They're librarians and therefore inherently awesome, much like teachers and astronauts.

Is anyone having trouble downloading/accessing the main game page? Managing to slay my last 1.1 character and was looking to update, but I can't get the site to load.
