I sort of agree with you that it is the definitive Angband version.
4.2 has a different lore file format to 4.1. If you go into your user directory (~/Documents/Angband) and rename your lore.txt file, you should be OK. This way you can switch back and forth between 4.1 and 4.2, you just need to remember to keep the right file actually named lore.txt.

bloody hell, two more paladins dead, one to the same mob: basilisk. And i had detected it, i popped a Spd, fired all my ammo, breathed acid on it, activated a Acid Bolt artifact, and STILL died.

The basilisk really is the low-level Terrasque; it moves double speed, breathes poison, AND paralyzes. I realize now how i lost a character to a basilisk, i had no FA.

2 Paladins dead, first in town, second to a basilisk that somehow double moved me.

see, one thing we needed more than more passwall mobs, was a practical UI review.

I've gone all my Angband life without inscriptions, now that i got !d i'm fine. I guess i would use @ inscriptions more if i played more mages.

For me its the opposite: I rely on staves and dont carry scrolls normally. While the weight is less, staves work when confused or blinded, and since I am usually missing at least one of these protections, I dont have to worry about annoying X or more dangerous melee confusers. Without staff, the only way to esacape is a !speed and those are precious, if available at all.

When the stack weighs me down, I drop all but two.

Newest @ got killed by walking into a room with way, way too many dark elf mages + escorts (probably two spawns of the same mob group). CL25, DL28, 305hp, but ran out of !Spd, i did have a bunch of CCW left, but i had already killed so many mages that i figured there could not be many left, so i phased, and obviously phased into the worst spot.
Note that this was not a pit - just a regular room.
