          Wait does wait one player turn, which should always give you a chance against slower monsters as they move into view. But +1 extra shot or fast-cast guarantees you a turn against monsters 2x faster. At speed +5, that is almost every monster in the game.

            i guess i will be using the MM trick from now on.

            OR, weird thought i know, but hear me out, or, 4.2 could have centered into tweaking the game engine to resolve these problems, instead of adding necromancers and lag.



            .....aaaaaaaaaaaanyway,

            i finally have the Wizard's Tome Of Power.

            my all encompassing arsenal now includes Shock and Explosion - which are good spells, but not really endgame stuff - Banish and MBan (yet to see if they do anything in vaults, but otherwise TO should work just as well - they are really only needed for pits and graveyards), Mana Storm (that kinda *forces* you do get CL50 and INT 18/***), aaand .. that's it.

            No haste. No slow. No berserk and hero, no buffing magic weapons, no greater recharge (so now even wands of annihilation are out), no rune, no recall (but we get create doors!), and of course none of the elemental attacks, no Rift, no chaos blast.

            At least Thrust Away could (after an appropriate name change) work as a beam S2M ?

            So, rather than a new and improved mage, we get a challenge-mode mage. I guess i can still build max-speed, max CON max INT, dig a big room and DD my way around morgoth and Mana Bolt him (which will force me to grind for tons of health potions), but i much rather prefer a mage that has some multi-role abilities.

            4.2.1 is still .. a game. it can still be played, beaten (with some care), and while some major QOL improvements were made by Nick during these last few years (in primis the Rune system, and the balance to the obscene randart powers in 4.0), i dont see this as a step in the right direction.

            .. i cannae believe i still needs to bind a key to rest.

              sadly, we will never know.

              got greedy, and decided to fight Quulzzququaudpppp even after i got hallucination.
              Then i teleported away to recover, the witch king of angmar sent me away, and some harmless hound i had next to me ... was in fact the tarrasque.
              I'm pretty sure i resisted Chaos until last dive, i must have changed something.

                My commiserations, that sounds like a painful end.

                From my experiences with post 4.2 mages, in the later game you shouldn't be in melee range of anything remotely dangerous.
                You have great control over the battlefield and particularly with Mana Storm do a ton of damage from level 45. Even with the fail rate nothing else will come close.
                Use the slots that used to be for books for the missing essentials.
                Because you don't need to worry about damage from weapons, you can choose purely based on Int, Con, speed and resistances.

                  no no ..

                  Ok so. I had cleared the level (fairly empty level) and was at the last room, which had the good stuff in it. I banished everything, and then i discovered that Quzzp was there. I stupidly decided to melee him, and he kept summoning uniques which i would teleport away.

                  i got hallucinated;

                  At one point i go mana-blasted by the witch king (while still meleeing Quzp) and decided to teleport away.

                  I found a safe spot and started resting. By pressing my "rest" key, i thought i had ended the hallucination. Keep in mind that i just did a 11h shift at work.

                  I get teleported again, and i read "the witch kind commands you to go away".

                  Ok, i am in an empty corridor, and there is only one tiny useless mob about 8 squares away, it can't do anything .. think, could hound, or bandit. Something dumb like that.

                  Except, that was still an hallucination. It was actually the Tarrasque, which does 400 dmg with a resisted cold breath (1600 base).

                    The other thing is: mages should keep their resistances active, especially when hallucinating.

                      It does 533 resisted, 1/3 of the base value.
