    WIP mage 4.2.1

    Dunadan Mage

    less wordy than before, just focused on game issues.

    nice that it starts with character building points in CON instead of DEX; 6 STR 8 INT 6 CON.

    my first character dies to Fang on DL2, CL3.

    Second character does better. Spells are no longer where i am used to seeing them (i.e in years of muscle memory). Detect monsters is no longer lev1, which should be bad, but then again if you die at CL1, just restart.

    I crawl until DL5, read 3 new scrolls hoping for Descent, and one is - DL11 i find Book2 and a Maul of *Slay Troll, not gonna be doing much troll slaying just yet, but +2 STR is nice.
    I sell the stuff i found and buy Book3.

    I hit a could of level-ups just by reading spells - not as drastic as the 4.2.0 druid, though.

    I get Frost Bolt at CL13 at 31% fail. so .. CL15 to use it reliably? not great.

    i get the impression that trap appear where previously there wre none.

    By CL16 i realize that frost bolt may be a long way off. still 22% fail, which IRL means 30/40% when there's a mob in sight.

    casting the spell of Teleport Other nets me 200xp for the effort, a bit buch at this CL.

    oh wow so we now get Resistance at CL20, from a town book!, and also a dragon breath spell?

    Fireball seems overpowered because, 1) it's a fireball, 2) it's low mana cost compared to the previous fireball, 3) it's low fail chance.
    Previous fireball was a spell i never used because it's bad on points 2 and 3, being too expensive and too high fail, when most bunch of mobs situations can be dealth with better with bolts, one by one, then recover mana, then again one by one, etc.
    once the mana problems and fail problems go away, you will probably not use it anyway, because of the distructive nature of the fireball on drops, and because there's better options - acid bolt, mostly, but also Explosion if drops are not a concern (i.e mobs like trolls).

    New fireball is better, but then again, it's now too strong, imho, for lowly mobs like orcs, it wipes them out.

    At CL24, my MM does 7d4 (average 17), my fireball 48, electric arc 7d6 (24), frost bolt 12d8 (54) and acid blast 12d8 (54).

    going slowly (not that i go fast, normally) because i'm unsure of what weird new things have been added, and how to cope with them. It's cringey that i do not have Haste, Slow, or even Stone To Mud!!

      Wait til you try the replacement for haste self. It is a whole lot more powerful.

        spells which are sorely missed

        1. slow monsters
        2. haste

        yeah we get the endgame double-cast spell which is great in the endgame; but not when struggling to get past DL30. because together slow and haste allow you to kill via MM most things that otherwise have resists to your bolts.

        3. satisfy hunger - i can take it or leave it.
        4. stone to mud

        5. spear of light
        such an incredibly useful spell when setting up for a fight with many mobs.

        it may not seem like much but they are utility spells that allow you to get around, avoid difficult fights, and increase your chances against value targets.

          what rotten luck, nothing at all in several hours of scumming. I found a miserable axe artifact that sold for 3000gold :/
          No ESP, no dungeon books, no Spd, the only decent thing i found was a sling of buckland from a store (and with +0.5 shots, bleh).

            ugh .. still not better. this has to be the worst DL45-camping character i've ever had.
            (or not, but it sure feels that way)

            i'm basically just teleporting away every mob.

                If you areteleporting everything, you might as well dive. With detection, mapping, esp, and fastcast, only a very limited set of monsters can get the jump on you even at speed +5. (They need greater than speed 20!) Zero-fail means they have no chance.
                As they round a corner, cast Magic missile at the wall. Then TO them when they come into LOS.

                    I do not mean wait, because that takes a full player turn. I mean cast a meaningless spell in 1/2 player turn so a faster monster can't double move you. (It works with a +1 shot bow, too.)

                    Half-turn moves are way more powerful than haste self, because they double the effect of your actual speed. Thus speed ×1 becomes speed x2, like haste self. But speed x1.5 becomes speed x3 (or +20)

                    The only problems for a mage with fast-cast are that quaffing heal still takes one turn, and he can't so easily run from a graveyard. In every other way he is better off than one with haste self--and not just when he is endgame powerful.

                      i always figured that the wait function would wait for one turn of *my* turns, so, if i have base Spd +10, then any 1 turn i wait is only 1/2 a turn.

                      That's how mobs that move slower than me have been managing to breathe after going around a corner.
