    Name is name I think? I've got so many broken old copies of the list that I can't find it anymore. Sometimes it gives a line & coloumn which I'm pretty sure is from the old format.

      Does modern Angband still use the .raw files? They probably won't be rewritten if the .txt edit file has an older modified time than the .raw file.

        Ok I lost that file somehow, but I've got one where I can catch it in the act with redo & undo. All I do is remove the giant black ant. Name is name. Put it back, parses. Remove again: name is name.

          Ok. If I put the broken version of monster.txt & monster-blows in a fresh copy of feature. It compiles and parses.

            So was testing and turned squelch off to see what was dropping. Then double checked in feature and there are now a lot of class books but on top off that more are useless to you and I wasn't a fan of it, so I'm thinking 1 realm? I was already starting to think that way because it makes a bunch of stuff easier for me. Mage can just use any book he finds. I don't have to think whether my mage is the mage or the priest. There's just a bunch of stuff that's easier if all books are the same realm. Not sure what that's going to mean for rogue/paladin/druid yet. Probably mostly specialist spells for druid/paladin and rogue the poorer version of mage.

                I'm having trouble getting rid of traps. I took a fresh copy of feature branch and went through cave-gen.c and everywhere it said "place traps", I commented it out. Then when that failed I removed the bits that place rubble. I think there's less traps but I'm sitting on dlvl 2 looking at a blinding gas trap. I have no idea whether I've missed something or whether Vs trap code is buggy to start with.

                  I'd suggest just changing place_trap in trap.c to do nothing (just return true at the top of the function). That might break placing Glyphs of Warding (which I think are a kind of trap?) but it should otherwise disable all traps.

                    Looking now. I'll give that a go. It's only meant to be no traps at the start (which'll just kill the hobbit mage outright) but if I can still just specify the levels in trap.c that'll work also

                      I'd suggest setting trap probability to zero in terrain.txt

                        I'm guessing you actually mean trap.txt
                        There's a minimum depth there too, so I'll try setting that to 11 & seeing if that removes them from the first 10 levels

                          Some templates for interesting rooms and vaults also place traps, see gen-room.c (search it for "place_trap").

                            Thanks again, I'll take a look. There's something else though, it happens in corridors & it happens on levels without any interesting rooms. I'm trying Pete's suggestion which looks simplest, I just haven't tested it much to see if it's worked. I did run into an unexpected issue with Wormtongue cackling meaninglessly about traps. Perhaps he was reminiscing about the good old days when he could do that. If this doesn't work I have vague memories of Nick having to fix traps because they weren't generating recently. It might be possible to unfix the fix.

                            I also read your other post on level gen. It was interesting & I took a look through the gen, but I still don't understand it well enough to do more then just fiddle but I'll keep it in mind for when I do.

                                Reworked stats. I'd love to say it was carefully fine tuned, statistical analysis, blah, blah. It was a bit more sloppy. Hopefully it holds up later in the game. Presumably it'll take rebalancing.

                                I think I'll start keeping a record of broken code documentation. For instance obj-gear.c refers to a non-existent dungeon.c
