I'm pretty sure that if you play the nightlies, then nexus breath will instead swap all of your stats around, but only temporarily. I say "pretty sure" because Nick incorporated my pull request that implements that feature, but that was months ago and I haven't been playing much lately.

I'm going to take your advise and just start over. Drops weren't happening and it was getting frustrating. The proverbial "straw" was a 2-6 feeling after 45 minutes of ensuring that I didn't miss anything finally found a small room with some treasure in it. All it yielded was some arrows of slay animal....

Trolling level 20 because of free action isn't a really good reason. Trolling because you can't kill anything with a +3 spear is somewhat better. But that's likely to change at any moment--even the armorsmith sells better stuff. One of those weak damage rings with -AC would help there. So would magic devices, even a wand of wonder.

The idea of diving used to terrify me. But now I adopt the attitude of PowerDiver. If I *do* get punished diving, it was fun and I'll be back to DL30 in no time; less time invested, more fun (it's exciting being ooD!), and no grinding. Also, the more @s I kill off, the less attached I get to each @ and the cool ooD gear it's found early on. Your DAR thread is likely to be more interesting, too, if you dive.

Grinding is usually a terrible strategy. If you die and restart, you might still find FA faster IRL than grinding at DL20. When you factor in deaths due to inattention, it's my oipinion that grinding always loses.

However, as you can tell from my chosen moniker, I am ever so slightly biased. Doesn't mean I am wrong ...

Normally that would be the route that I take but lacking any substantial damage I'm not feeling the risk of diving deeper. We'll see, if within a reasonable time I cant find either free action or some kind of real damage/armor I might risk going deeper. Still working with no ego items other than a HLA with resist acid on it and a (+3 +3) spear. Hoping that the floodgates open soon and I will get something with a brand and those boots/gloves I need will drop.

That's entirely the wrong attitude. Keep going down, and just be careful. The FA items start to come more commonly at DL25 and much more commonly at DL30.

Waiting around at DL20 waiting for FA is precisely the kind of advice the old "strategy guides" used to suggest, but they were 100% wrong. Just detect evil and stay far away from ghouls.

I remember dying ALOT when I was a kid to paralysis very early in the game.

Had an experience like that recently with an AMH dragon. TO him out of a vault and played hide and seek the rest of the level. I just happened to pick up a ring of res poison right before I stepped into a hallway and caught poison breath from out of my sight range. Seeing that green ball come down the hallway actually made me jump. 17 health left I read a teleport level and hoped I didn't get dropped into some nonsense room with some hounds in it. Turned out alright.

I actually survived a carrion attack when without FrAct not long ago. I think I had over 200 health and probably decent AC. My numbers were in the red when I finally got to have a turn again, though. I was pleased when I gained FrAct not too long after that unpleasant encounter. It was a good experience, though. Usually in my games I have FrAct before I ever see a carrion crawler, so it was fun going around shooting arrows at them and trying to explore a level while I knew they were lurking nearby.

Oh it hardly takes Guinness to run blindly into monsters.
    Watch out for orange orcs.

I have to agree with Pete Mack (I LOL'd ); I'd play ten times more recklessly than I already do if I ever attempted Angband drunk. Hell, I wouldn't even make it out of the town alive.

I learned to respect Beorn and Azog very early in my Angband career. I remember being horrified how quickly Azog pummeled me the first time I made it passed DL20 and a similar experience with Beorn probably in the mid 30s or so. I still can't keep straight the lesser unique orcs, though.

Ha. Reading those actually reminds me of myself playing after a few drinks. Just walking around killing everything you can find because they gave me some look (probably). I swear the one that always catches me is Lagduf. Mindlessly clearing a vault or hallway full of Snagas then I'm dangerously low on hp and really confused as to why. His character model is so hard to discern from the others (being color blind doesn't help much, which is also why I cant play with the "no graphics" option). Ah well was having a blast. Found a nice spear with a venom brand and even found an early dropped msm of resist. When I realized how bad I had misplayed I spent probably 5 minutes looking at the overall map and my inventory trying desperately to find that one way I could survive..... it wasn't there lmao.

Think I'm done playing for the day though. SPL open bracket is finally finished and I want to watch some of the key games.
