    I'm not wearing both rings of escaping right now but I had been up until just now. I just found boots of speed <+5> and the good ring of the mouse I bought from the store makes it seem worth it to swap out the second +3 speed escaping (I tweaked the 4.2.5 slightly, so that rings of the mouse show up in the magic shop, and rings of escaping have a range of +2 to +4 speed, among other small changes).

      i would have kept those uniques alive at least until DL25, but likely deeper.
      I can see why you'd want teh activation of the dragon mail, but with the crossbow you'd probably do better using the Dwarven mail.
      is WIS your casting stat now? Because .... "nature" ?

        That is a mug's game. Bullroarer at dl 25 has a level 15 drop. That is far less valuable than a level 5 good drop at level 5, which can really help you past the next 10 levels. Especially foe a low level ranger, who is fairly weak until he gets a good bow or a very good weapon.

          I do sometimes leave uniques for later. Not bullroarer, he is a source of stuff when I have nothing yet, but once I have the basics covered it becomes unlikely to get an upgrade from a kill and I might as well kill Smaug on lvl 95 rather than 50.
          I do this because my game is to optimize gear for the run, not trying to get a fast win.

            another game decided by two ridiculous artifacts, a RoP with +2 blows (+6 STR doesnt hurt either) and another with +13 Spd (found *immediately* after finding a RoS +10 which was basically worn for 5 minutes and then never again.

            did most of my game with

              That's crazy! To be fair, in a million turn game, you will generally have a good kit. Just nowhere near that kit.

                early +3 speed amulet DL22, boots of speed +3 drop, elven cloak +1, 1x escaping +4 = speed 11 before DL30.
                sling of power with massive damage, idk +17 early on, then crossbow of power +15 bough from store, then Haradrim, but didn't really use it massively. I had P5 before i had any other TO, i think i found my first wand of TO well after DL98.

                and then i found a ring of speed +10, and not 30 second later i was dropped a ring of power +6 CON, +12 Spd.

                (i didnt use the +1 blow armour until the end, and never used the dragon armor; i did find +SlayEvil on my ring, but would have actually gone down in damage with it, even with a 6d8 MoD artifact i found)

                  i hate playing warriors. If the game decides you die, there's nothing you can do. You cant teleport yourself, you cant teleport mobs. Basically you just grind until the game decides you have waited long enough and gives you something to TS/TO.

                  CL18 dead on DL24 and *some* artifact or similar on the level. All i had was a stack of CLW and another of Phase because i hadn't ID/purchased/found anything else. Werebear and one of the crappier orc uniques double-teamed me, eventually ran out of everything.

                      lol. I have too in desperation used rings of teleportation, both as an escape (although those buggers seem to always teleport you when you dont need it and never when you do) and as a power boost from the +Spd.

                        Every class has to do some parts with devices; warrior has to do all parts with devices. Depending on what you find, you can slow grind, hulk smash or play him like a ranger. He is marginally better at hand to hand than the half casters so yes, he is underpowered.

                        @PowerDiver: Why rings, staves are frequent and can be bought for ~2k ?

                          I was assuming staves were not available, since to my reading the OP implied could not buy better escapes than ?phase. At my descent rate, this problem is somewhat common.
