No artifacts is pretty tough for a new(ish) player. One trick you may not know: with no artifacts, the only "heavily cursed" items that exist are melee weapons. Everything else (i.e. bows, rings, amulets, body armor, cloaks, shields, helmets, gloves, boots) can be tried on immediately to see if there is any obvious effect (for example, if armor or shield increase your stealth, then they must be "of Elvenkind"). If the item is cursed, then you can just cast the regular Remove Curse prayer and remove it. Only melee weapons have the possibiliy of being heavily cursed and immune to the normal Remove Curse prayer. These you need to carry around until you get a pseudo-id (or use some means of Identify) before you can know for sure if they are safe to wield.

Also: I would recommend not going deeper until you have Resist Poison. Drolems start appearing at level 44, and they are a serious problem for a Paladin, since they are not evil (and so aren't shown with Detect Evil), and they cannot be detected by Telepathy, and they can instantly kill you (733 damage without ResistPoison). Admittedly PowerDiver (and others) blow right past this, but they have an awful lot of experience (and don't mind losing a character or two to the dreaded "It breathes, you die").

Personally, I prefer to slow play characters, and if it were me, I probably wouldn't want to go deeper without 500+ HP, even with ResistPoison. But that's a personal preference kinda thing.
