Most of my 86 characters were restarts to experiment with race/class combos and statistics. Many of the rest were deaths before clvl 10. I'm bad at openings.

The start has evolved to:
Sell weapon, armour, and spell book.
Buy main gauche; flasks of oil for throwing (thanks to forum newbie advice!); scroll of remove curse to allow ID by use of rings and amulets; scrolls of phase door.

12 points were put in STR and CON. High initial CON counters rarity of stat potions. High STR allows multiple blows while wearing rings of CON and resist poison, and reduces burden. My previous characters with some points in DEX and INT had low hp and died to breaths. Maybe it's just me.

I leave spell books at home and play like a stealthy warrior, using potions, scrolls, and devices. The middle game has consequently been slow.

Some lessons learnt the hard way:
-wands of sleep monster are good escapes until buying a teleport staff
-if you have used teleport other or teleport self, the level is unsafe (apparently I lack a sensible fear of danger)
-infravision is useful before getting telepathy
-use Deep Descent scrolls as escapes, not for diving
-stay near the stairs
-if there is a ring of CON (+4) or better in the BM, buy it!

A guardian naga has just dropped a Lothlorien bow with telepathy, allowing the wearing of a Crown of Serenity. Also recently acquired a Teleport Other rod and wand. I'm tempted to dive for speed items, but my intuition keeps screaming not to. Hmmm... Westernesse weapon for stats or Defender for stealth and regen?

Nearly stocked up with consumables for the final two fights. Just need more staves of banishment and magi. Not sure about character strength yet, low hp and AC.

After killing Ar-Pharazon, accidentally cast teleport level instead of identify when I got confused and thought I was a paladin. Left behind un-IDed loot, not that there was DSM armour or anything. What a scatterbrain.

Hunted Carcharoth and Huan and breathed a sigh of relief. Lost a staff of healing while recharging.

A master Q summoned the Witch-King who summoned demons. Not sure who called Ren and Khamul. Gained a level from fighting but was forced off the level. The Witch-King had the better plan.

Decided to fight Sauron before losing the last staff of healing. Took the staves of banishment and magi, and acid branded bolts. Used shoot and phase door tactics in an open room. Sauron called Glaurung, then Vecna, both with escorts. Banished dragons and teleported away Glaurung. Teleported self from Vecna, let the reavers bring Sauron to me, then banished 'L' and teleported other Vecna. Sauron finally summoned animals, which got in the line of sight and were more of an obstacle than the others, but to no avail.

After Sauron fell, took the opportunity to kill Vecna. Recalled afterwards to preserve staves. Still looking for another staff of banishment.

Morgoth didn't summon much at first, so it was easy to get him down to half health with holy might bolts. He soon made up for this however by calling demons, uniques, and undead.

Sure enough, the banishment staff was destroyed on the first recharging attempt. Tried destructing away the summons, but this broke up line of sight. The spell failed once, allowing Morgoth one round of melee, but he missed with the drain charges attack. Ha-ha!

Medusa and some undead were called, so decided to back away so that Morgoth would overtake them with his superior speed. Managed a few shots each time before phasing, picked up bolts as opportunities arose, and whittled him down till he died.

With hindsight, it would have been better to carry a stack of phase door scrolls instead of one of the spell books.

As a usually paladin player I've always wanted to understand the rogue mindset. I think I get it now. You're supposed to think flexibly and be opportunistic. No need to worry about what depth is safe because stealth looks after you. Very unlike the paladin, where heals can protect you from the hordes if you choose a good depth and doctrine.

With a bad strategy the middle levels come as a shock. With a good strategy the difference is more subtle, as if you were using weak artifacts. You will really miss the elven rings.

Since you can't cover all needs with equipment, it's better to concentrate on getting telepathy, speed, base 4 resist, CON, and poison resist, in that order. Everything else is a luxury. Staves of teleport are a necessity because you will rarely get all of conf/blind/sound resist. Telepathy and good monster memory are important for avoiding instakills. My previous priest characters cast probing a lot with this in mind.

Melee is weak and launcher to_hit is low without Elessar and artifact gloves. You can kit out either for melee (high STR/DEX and sustains) or for archery, but rarely for both because you often need a weapon slot for telepathy, resists, or stats.

It's a game of preparation and stamina, like an expedition. You need to plan ahead what sort of equipment you realistically want to use, and be patient to get it. Finally you also have to take some risks, so a slightly cavalier attitude to danger can help too.
