Off to a great start, but I've just realized that the uniques in the arena probably count. Still, he's off to a great start so I'll probably keep playing. Would the Cloning Pits uniques count as well or no?

I think the "You have killed X enemies including Y uniques in total" would be a good final criterion...

You know what? I've been restarting too many times because I accidentally killed some unique or other. It's time to live with a few unique kills and press on!

Stupid Grip. Was mixed in with a bunch of random werewolves and weir, and I didn't see it until it was dead.

The hounds got revenge. Was running around fairly low on health, and there was a hippogriff RIGHT next to the stairs after I went down them. Room looked pretty safe so I couldn't resist killing it, but there was a hallway a little ways away that I couldn't see down. Apparently there was a whole pack of gravity hounds in there, just out of the room so it wasn't illuminated. Annoying that I spent 3-4 turns in the room with the hounds doing nothing, and then 4 decided to breath on me in the same turn. Ah well.

Got the ?acquisition from the arena, and then when the phial turned up, I got another from the Dark Elven Lords quest. Cashed both in on the top level of the Dragon Lair, but got nothing to show for it except a bunch of wasted travel turns.

Out of curiosity, if no one kills the Serpent, would the winner be a level 1 character who suicided on their first turn with zero uniques slain? (1*0)/1 = 0. Tough to get lower than that.

I liked how the starting situation has a couple little tests of your Heng mechanics knowledge.

Good point about the ranking of the non-winners, although, frankly, I'm certain one of us can win if we just disregarded the whole uniques killed business. No more than 50 uniques killed should be easily doable, given a little bit of care. it's pushing it down lower than 20 that starts becoming tricky.

Dammit! My new character went down to a new level. He spent his first level detecting for traps, and on the very next turn Heart Attack charged out of the darkness and exploded itself on him. Cheap way to get a first unique kill. Never even saw it on the screen except as it zipped over to her.

Attempt #2

Not going quite as swimmingly as attempt #1, but at least he's not dead yet. Yes, those are really the best gloves he's come across so far. I should probably enchant them up to +6 or so, though it hardly seems worth it.

Hung onto the ?acqusition from Dark Elven Lords quest (I try to wait on doing it until the Phial appears) until dlevel 60 and it produced the Lochaber axe. Its probably a side-grade to the starting axe or at best a slight upgrade, but it feels nice to be able to shelve Protein. Plus, it helps a lot with my digging conundrum.

First (and still only) !speed found was used in the Dark Elven Lords quest and immediately before this dump he found his first staff of speed in the BM so speed has been a struggle. Yet it always feels like the characters who get off to promising starts die horribly to overconfidence while the ones who have to scratch and claw end up winning. We'll see.

Not literally attempt #2, of course. I've had a fair few die at various points. This is just the first one to overtake my first posted attempt.

Was feeling dissatisfied with offensive output and then ran into Ishikawa Goemon while scumming Mine (poor choice of dungeon to scum, btw). He doesn't just have a chance of dropping Zantetsuken, its like 70+%. So, I bit the bullet and offed him. And he dropped the (10d4) katana, which was nice. Combined with that +4 ring of STR 6 blows/round and 500 damage/round became doable, and life suddenly was looking good.

Further scumming in the mine turned up Brand on a level with nothing really dangerous, so I decided to go for it. If he dropped his crossbow, life would really be looking good, so I went for it.

A long fight, a destroyed ring of rChaos, and about 50 "heal self" spells cast by Brand later, and he was dead. Blew through about half my stocked up !heal pots, but disappointment ensued. Frakir and Rohirrim, but no crossbow. Ah well, was worth a try.

Cloning Pits down.

Was a little dicey at the start. Cleared out the Toms and Fasolts (teleporting a couple away. it was rockier than expected) to clear space, but before I could really do anything the Jurts got out and started invoking Logrus all over the place wrecking my LoS blocks and leaving me hallucinating half the time. The Dagons got out too, and fought them for like a round at the staircase, but it didn't go well and a Jurt got LoS on me and kept invoking Logrus. I remembered to bring a few !restorelife but forgot the !curing, so I used a couple !healing just to get away.

Teleported over to the Grendels and tried clearing them, but was hallucinating and they were going down slower than expected. Killed like 1 and had to use a pair of !healing and teleported away. Was feeling demoralized. Finally got to the SW just as the hallucination wore off, and there was nothing dangerous among the random mobs. Cleared them and the Bokrugs and decided dual-wielding wasn't working well (was using Zantetsuken and the Rapier of Pattern. The various town shops adamantly refusing to stock !heroism for two full game days before hand was a contributing factor), so swapped to Zantetsuken and the mirror shield, which even took me to 5 attacks with Zantetsuken, but my offense was probably about even and took a LOT less damage.

After that, whittled down the summoners (first Its, then ant queens - swapping to rapier, then Gachapins, then finally the Dagons. Two Gachapins got away and lots of Hydras got summoned, but they never got out of control.) and cleaned up. Never figured out what the randoms were on the right side, but since they were killed by fire ants, couldn't have been that bad.

Big drops were cambeleg, the randart shield, the randart launcher would have been nice if not for the amazing starting launcher, and Tetsu-Geta of Flame (one of my all time favorite artifacts for reasons I can't really explain, and I'd wear 'em in a heartbeat if not for the boot reward). However, the REAL win from the Cloning Pits was the array of spiffy mutations the Jurts gifted me with. Apparently spending all that time hallucinating was well worthwhile (yes, I forgot to bring a source of rChaos. Turns out to have been a good thing). Extra legs and Harden to Elements are great and none of the rest are bad, so I'm pretty pleased.

As usual after Cloning Pits, struggling to find optimal combination of gear. Should I swap back to dual wield (900+ damage potential, and I've been DYING to use that holy bastard sword)? Since I'm not fighting uniques, the great wyrms are the only things I really have accuracy issues with (since I'm not fighting uniques). On the other hand, I do good damage with Zantetsuken and shield. How attached am I to having reflection? Big issues are managing rConfusion since I WILL be using the new boots, and trying to come to grips with STILL having a +4 CHR neck as the best thing that's dropped or been available via store.

Oh, Julian and the Death Scythe both dropped while clearing a troll pit in the Dragon's Lair. Julian's is great, of course, and the Death Scythe taunts me.

Funny randart shield considering the limits put on ninja shield use.

Miraculously, while selling extra stuff after cloning pits, an armor store had a cloak of the bat (+4) for sale, and with the Harden mutation, Colluin is no longer mandatory. So, going into Cloning Pits he was at base speed +0. After Cloning Pits (and before setting foot anywhere else), he's up to +11. After a bumpy start, things have started looking up.

Failed Old Castle. All the usual difficult mobs, except the Iron Lich, were dead, but it was costly and the Sorceress summoned a pair of Hell Wyrms so it was going to be painful to finish off anyway. But the &*#$&* Bat was one of the spawns in the "dungeon" area. It has some good drops so I was pondering whether to take the hit and kill it anyway, but then the various Titans summoned Gachapin and Meng Huo's... brother or something, and 3 uniques was just too steep a price to pay so I bailed.

Picked Careth Astriag (sold) and Isildur as consolation prizes.

Sigh. Another unique intentionally killed: the Stormbringer. Was trying to evade some unteleportable uniques to get to a vault (was going to try to head down a few more levels in Angband), and after about the 3rd time I teleported Stormbringer away, I thought "wait a minute. my big problem is that my "core" gear is missing rConfusion, rNether, rChaos, rDisenchantment and Hold Life (a bad group of resists to be missing), and I'm juggling rings and armor to try and keep even 2 of those covered at any point in time.

Stormbringer would cover all of those except rDisenchant (which I can get from Julian) by itself. How bad could the hit to my damage output be? Pretty bad, as it turns out, though having every except rSound covered AND running around at base speed +21 is pretty darn spiffy (found both the speed rings sitting on the ground in the same room while trying to get into the vault).

Mmm. Hadn't done the math to realize a warrior simply cannot get 6/blows round single-hand wielding a weapon weighing more than 24 pounds (and he'd need his Dex up to 18/180 for anything weighing 15.1 - 24.0 pounds). I'd noticed Stormbringer was only 5/round when I first wielded it, but I assumed I'd be able to juggle gear and reach 6. Apparently not. Grumble grumble.

If he can keep that RoS equipped, he can probably ditch the cloak of the bat, as the combat penalties probably outweigh the speed bonus at this point.
