At 1600' have Colluin and Thengel and HA weapon and boots of FA.

Your turncount is impressive. Do you dive just as fast in ironman as in regular play? I've been going ultra-slowly because everything seems more dangerous when I can't burn through store-bought consumables like candy. Good luck with this guy!

On 29.9.2009 19:34 PowerDiver wrote:
Yes, I play like normal pretty much. I think the key item is a rod of treasure location, and I didn't find one, so I will probably go down too fast and die. I'm trying to use detect evil to find easy kills to slow the descent a bit,.

Ultra-slow works too, but it's a question of balancing consumables. The slower you go, the more you collect, but the more you have to use or get destroyed.

Huh. I'm down to 1950 feet and haven't found a single rod of treasure location. Still methodically clearing out every level, except for abominations like jelly pits. I miss PB3 - a stupid Hellhound blew up both of my copies in one breath.

That's the problem with clearing levels. A single breath can mean doom. If you clear levels, a rod of treasure location is of dubious value.

3150' and 274K turns, recently found Crisdurian but just one blow, and just got Cubragol from a pack of dreads. I wonder if I should try to save my xbow(x3)(+13,+24) in case I ever find branded bolts.

I usually wield *SlayEvil{ESP} and switch to Haradekket to kill things and Eriril to id stuff. My biggest weakness is getting blinded. A nov mage almost killed me by blinding me in the middle of a tough fight.

So much for "superb" magic device skill. I guess I spent too much time on the level killing the dreads.

Also, he was around a corner so had to double-move to get the breath off, but I guess that was 50% likely to happen given our relative speeds. I was resting to full hp before swapping to ESP weapon before moving, but I don't think that was the key mistake.

Hi Eddie. Sorry to see this one go down.

As someone who hasn't played V since 2.9.2 (and then almost exclusively mages), I followed your lead on starting gear. A few questions...

- are the flasks of oil primarily for when you find a lantern or for use as a ranged weapon
- how deep are you before you starting using the ?dObj
- I've played a few brief games, but nearly starved in one (found first food when already consuming potions to keep me alive) and another I aborted after my torches ran out. Did you face problems like that or was I unlucky with consumable finds/drops?
- do you rest? I got out of the habit of this playing low turncount games in FA. However I keep getting caught out running around with low HP.
- what do you do about iding jewelry? I haven't seen a single source of id yet and wielding them seems a little risky (unless the object list has changed dramatically since learn by id was implemented). I haven't really played Paladins before - do they get remove curse any time soon? (assuming you can find the blasted books)

Cheers, Si

- oil is primarily for throwing, does 2d6 * 3 damage with good range
- ?dObj starts at 250' [PB1 native] or 400'[-dObj native], 1 per level
- at my speed, 8 torches = entire game, but I do need to start with 2
- the main reason to start with food is !saltWater, comes in bunches, die occasionally to starvation, smart to start with 2 but none is more exuberant
- Yes, I do rest, primarily for mana, preferably on the stairs just before going down. In the middle of a level low on mana, might rest until full hp.
- remove curse is in PB2 -- in normal games I start with PB2 or 2+ ?rCurse

Generally speaking, find PBn between DL 10*n and 10*(n+1)

I haven't played paladins in a long time, most familiar with dwarf priests. They get rCurse at CL 7. You will probably be able to learn it by the time you find PB2.

Jewelry tends to be cursed a lot, searching or str -1, early on. After a while, only ring of dog and amulet of inertia are major worries. Unfortunately, either will kill you.

If id is tight, you have to save it for scrolls. The killers are curse weapon and curse armor, which HEAVY_CURSE in addition to ruining the item, and enchants don't break the heavy curse in 3.1. If you can't afford to id all scrolls, the cursed ones are more likely to drop multiple [i.e. you find a stack of 2 unknown scrolls deep, beware]

Thanks for that. I need to work on reining in my desire to keep a low turncount and concentrate more on surviving and learning Vanilla and Paladins for a while...

Thanks for the hints, guys. I've been diving a little too fast and getting creamed by mobs recently (the drawback of a low-stealth char who can't run back upstairs when things get messy)...

Aww, you had a good run. Azriel has killed at least two of my promising characters (in general, not this competition). I hate that guy. My sympathies!

"So much for "superb" magic device skill."

In some previous post, character, dump or something you had the probabilities of using wands, staves and rods both during normal conditions and when confused displayed on Inspect. I'm guessing that'll never make it into V. However, I was wondering if there's a back of the envelope calculation that I could do to determine what item to use depending on urgency.

(I learn more from reading your stuff than I do playing myself I think. Thanks for all the advice you provide)

The stuff you remember is from my 309e series of patches, but that is ancient history now. The magic device stuff under inspection will happen some day, but I think Takkaria is waiting until he decides how he wants to change the device use rules before he puts it in. The rules are too confused now for rules of thumb. The only important device you should ever hope to use while confused is a staff of teleportation, and you don't care what the odds are. You use that because you have no choice.

I don't know why Tak refuses to print the exact number on the 'C' screen. I guess because it's not a percentage and the rules are so tricky it will just confuse newbies, but it would be very helpful.

Thanks for the thoughtful advice. My initial purchases included a whip and all the food rations and torches in the store. I couldn't handle thought of another ironman character starving to death or stumbling around blind, slow diver that I tend to be.
