[Clvl29, Dlvl80, 99531] FastFaye set out to test the "short" route to angband, with a minimum of time wasting. In truth, crossing Dorthonion was very difficult, and I suspect the south route is actually faster. Colannon was a helpful find enroute, and the speed boots were found immediately on arrival at Anf58. Anf58 was also kind enough to provide MB5, 6 and 7. The target was to set up camp on Lvl 80 in under 100k moves. Mission accomplished, but her development is well behind the curve set by Psi's phenominal effort. She's going to need a lot of help from the RNG from here on in. It looks like I'll have to forego the luxury of a second speciality, as getting to Ungo will probably take too long, so finding out about her new drop will have to wait.

[Clvl40, Dlvl77, 118671] Once a target is set, especially such a worthy effort as Psi's, it can encourage some rather extreme tactics to beat it. I think this gal still has a decent chance to do it, along with the possibility of a (I suspect) rather rare challenge ... killing no uniques except the big boss. I expect that trying to avoid killing them in the crossfire of the final battle may be a bit tricky though. In addition, putting every unique in the game at Morgies disposal could create some interesting problems. But FastFaye still has quite a lot of growing-up to do in a very short time before that becomes an issue. Oh, and I'm really starting to miss Heighten Magic.

Hehe, cracking effort, regardless of the outcome...

[Clvl49, Dlvl99, 134444] So FastFaye arrives to take on Morgie, with just enough moves left to sneak in under Psi's effort. In truth, it's almost guaranteed suicide, given the huge holes in her ability to resist most of Morgies favourate attacks. But it's been a fun game up to this point, and perhaps the RNG will take pity on me, after being pretty stingy up to this point - I didn't even find Ringil! Perhaps the RNG is mad because I still haven't killed any uniques.

Good work. I'll be really interested to see how Morgoth's AI deals with you. In theory he should cast Elemental Fury and discover your Nether hole and then blast you with Nether balls... which all sounds rather unpleasant.

[Clvl49, Dlvl100, 139061] A vulnerable mage with a full bag of tricks versus a very smart Morgie. The mage won rather easily, albeit not quite quickly enough. Resources used: 10 !Heal, 10 !*Heal*, 7 !ResMana. First some comments on Morgies AI. As Psi predicted, his first move was Elemental Fury (which nexus-teleported me across the dungeon). Thereafter, almost every spell was either nether storm, night storm, summon guardians or summon special. I used mainly banish evil for the summons (especially when the level became so congested with nasties that teleport-self became very dangerous), and dimension door and/or create doors to heal or restore mana. I used Cacophony and Thrust away exclusively to deal damage, to keep Morgie stunned as much as possible. When Morgie was banished, nasties in the vicinity were destructed. With these tactics, the only way Morgie could win was based on a 3% fail on the banish evil staff activation, as long as I didn't run out of healing and restore mana pots (and clear mind minimizes the need for the latter). The fight took about 3 hours of real time, as I plotted each move as carefully as one would a chess move. The level was flooded with all the high uniques, and every flavour of Winged Dragon (which is what the summon guardian spell yields if they've already been summoned). This mean't that the fight was constantly being interrupted. I tried as often as possible to teleport any visitors away, while keeping Morgie close, but out of line of sight, to reduce his regeneration time.

So not quite good enough to challenge Psi, but a hell of a fun game nonetheless. Also good to establish that you really don't have to kill *any* uniques except Morgoth to win.

That was a truly great effort. 3 hours for the final battle shows incredible patience, endurance and concentration - I think I managed close to an hour once with an underpowered char and I wouldn't fancy doing that again.

I think you played a much better game than mine - I was just ridiculously lucky with my finds.

Congratulations on a stunning game and a very professional final battle.

On 10.9.2009 10:26 Cave Man wrote:
Thanks, but I fancy that you could set a much stiffer target if you needed to. Getting the first star off Morgie was the hardest part - it seemed to take forever, and it felt like I was going to be well short of the resources needed to win. But once the first star went ... then the second ... I began to realise that the outcome was inevitable, given sufficient care and patience.

Nick: FWIW, I think that Cacophony without Heighten Magic was actually quite well balanced - nuking demon pits became much more risky, and nearly got me killed a few times.

On 10.9.2009 10:41 Psi wrote:
As suggested earlier I have a second Faye going at the moment. She also has a recall point at AR15 incase I can spare the time - which may be worthwhile given your comments about Heighten Magic. I have been a lot more careful in the wilderness, so in terms of location I am well up on turncount on my first Faye. However none of the bookshops had Minor Powers which meant I haven't managed to grab as much stuff as the first Faye did via telekinesis until I scummed the Fenns for a copy.

I got so lucky with speed items with the first Faye that I was often at +47 and that saved a lot of turns in the mid-end game. I'll need to find a lot of speed quickly not to lose the extra turns I've saved. Saying that though, playing too close to the edge will probably get me killed before I reach Morgy anyway.

This game has convinced me of a few things:
1. South is a much better option than North
2. Killing Mim for heighten magic will pay off turn-count wise
3. Anything over 600 HP's is enough for a mage to take out Morgie, even lacking RDark and RNether, so lvl50 / maxed con is not an absolute necessity (but obviously 0 fail on spells is).
4. Given the above, and with enough luck, I think a mage could actually challenge evariste ludicrous sub 100k turncount win in the last FA comp. In fact, if spoilsport Nick hadn't nuked Anf58's item generation, I'd be willing to put money on it!

I guess I've just talked myself into giving it a try.
