Did you play your first game of DaJAngband as a power sprite? That's kindof a novelty race. Pretty good stats, horrible hit die.

Power Sprite Barbarian was my first char and it felt pretty overpowered in early game. 14 hit die is good enough, and you get 50 dmg per round with birth weapon, so you can get around without launcher quite easily. The ability to heal doesn't hurt either.

Barbarian gets harder later because it's harder for them to get multiple attacks. They're made for a heavy weapon fighting style.
