Think I'm starting to get the hang of this. Got three Speedy's in a row to Anf58 on schedule. The first two are still alive, but abandoned, as they just didn't shape up in time to realistically challenge psi or evariste's efforts. Speedy3 came together very nicely. Khazad-dum, the Shadow ward set and Taratol were a great start. When Nargothrond turned up a few moves later, I began to believe I had a viable challenger. A few moves later, I found the ring of warfare +7, followed soon after by an amulet of trickery +2. Then Belthronding rounded things off. The only holes in my gear at this stage was a lack of RConf (for which I carried Holhenneth as a swop), sustain strength, and unmaxed con (I decided that real divers didn’t need telepathy!). I had also yet to find a weapon suitable for Morgie. Decided to dive Angband to see what would turn up. I had managed to buy 60 (!) scrolls of TLevel, which I used to dive very quickly - detect, walk to down shaft or stairs if close, else TLevel...wash, rinse, repeat (a bit snakes-and-ladders at times, but very turncount efficient). Found Denthor on the dungeon floor, lvl64, which took care of RConf (and a nice boost to accuracy), at the expense of poison resistance and 2 pts of speed. Found a ring of RPois which was carried as a swop. Found a demon pit on dlvl76, which I cleared to get to Clvl 41 (got nothing else useful). Then I found a pot of Life in a chest. Recalled from lvl99 to chat with the merchant at Ethel Brandir, and 4 buy outs yielded another 5 pots of Life (and 3 !Heal). So I had 6 !Life, 10 !Heal, 12 CCR, 9 !Beserk, 16 !Hero and 14 !Speed for the final battle (base speed +14). I just didn't have a Morgie weapon. Wielded a HA pike I’d found (normal dice), and recalled – death or glory. I wasn’t happy with the HA damage, so I “wasted” about 10k turns searching for something better - nothing. Killed Gothmog in the hope he'd drop something. Nope. And it cost me a precious !Heal. I regretted not bringing Taratol along to go dragon hunting. I was beginning to feel the RNG was taunting me, when I detected a 3d8 battle axe, guarded in a small vault by a GW of Power. I only had 1 charge in my -TOther, so I lured away his entourage with hit and run, then destructed them. Then TOthered the GWOP away. To my great relief, I found myself reunited with Belron, rather than Balli Stonehand. So with only 790 HP and my meager healing resources, I went to meet the big guy. Nick: check out the ring that rounded out my outfit - doubt you envisaged it as an end game item!

I think I was lucky to prevail - the low hit points forced me to take a lot of chances. I used the same tactics as my previous game - blink, create doors, heal - but the heal threshold I used was 450 HP, as opposed to 600 HP. I risked blinking on 2 occasions with less than 50 HP. I had to risk landing in his LOS in order to make sure I got the first blow on re-engagement. Made it with 1 !Life to spare, all !heal and CCR consumed. He summoned Guardians early in the fight. I teleported (Morgie had already drained my _Banish evil), and none of them managed to find their way back to the fight. That was his only summons. It’s probably worth noting that I think the chances of pulling this of without manaburn would have been zero.

This will be my final entry to this comp, as I’m off to Aus on business for a few weeks (G’day Nick), so I give myself a decent chance of getting 3rd place with this effort. There is no doubt that a sub 120k win is possible, and I have every expectation that psi or evariste will pull it off. I’d like to thank both of them for inspiring me to actually try this – normally I would have spent many more turns buffing this character before going in for the kill.
