Just completed my first dive. Not much to note. Smeagol dropped a Slime Mold. The first two rings I found were cursed, one of them was Aggravate Monster. That's a lot of fun with dis-connected stairs. I haven't met anything I can't handle yet. Quite a few uniques have gotten away.

I'm new to Vanilla, so two questions...
Can you sell items at the General Store? I can't.
Is there an auto-save option? I couldn't find one.

The general store wont buy (not bug, feature, though dont ask me why).

I dont know of any autosave option either.

Just completed my second dive. Once again, not much to note. I'm having a heck of a time finding armor. Weapons galore (none better than my trident), but no armor. No brands or artifacts yet, and more disturbing, no Free Action. The most fun I had was using the Staff of Summoning. I ran that damn thing out of charges. Best summon, Air Hounds. Most annoying summon, Phase Spiders. Spent most of my cash on Scrolls of Plus to Damage.

That second dive was actually cut short by a Potion of Lose Memories that drained away about 20% of my XP. I figured it would be faster to go back to town and hope for a Potion of Restore Life Levels, which was miraculously available, rather then to go on fighting.

Finally, a decent weapon, and it covers my FA and SI problem as well. Upgraded my Crossbow and added a point of CON. Forced to recall due to overflowing pack, shortage of bolts, and a few trolls.

Third (maybe fourth) dive complete. Found my first artifact, Dethanc. It will only be a swap weapon, as I still need the FA and SI the defender provides. Life draining is really becoming a problem. Stopping it is a priority. Gold, though not overly abundant, is not a problem as there is nothing good to buy.

What's the difference between a Staff of Enlightenment and Magic Mapping? They seem to do the same thing.

Is playing with 32x32 tiles killing my detection area of effect, or is it just really small?

On 23.12.2008 18:12 starstealer wrote:
tile size shouldn't matter - I think the area is fixed by squares.

On 24.12.2008 00:32 PowerDiver wrote:
Life draining is irrelevant. Just ignore it if you can't avoid it. Really.

Enlightenment staff = magic mapping, potion of enlightenment maps the entire level, and *enlightenment ids your pack and boosts int/wis in addition to map level. Hopefully the names will change to be consistent in 3.1.

I thought detection in this version of Vanilla was done by veiwable screen?

On 24.12.2008 05:58 buzzkill wrote:
It certainly seems to be by screen size. And there seems to be no easy way to switch from 32x32 to 8x8 for casting those detects.

Somehow surviving down here in the mid-40's, not that there haven't been a few close calls. Gained a 2nd blow with the Defender (increased STR?), and my means of teleportation hasn't failed me yet, but my kit isn't improving much. The Rod of Detection does come in handy.

I'm so envious of the rod of detection!

On 25.12.2008 17:59 buzzkill wrote:
The RoDetection is a mixed blessing. It's nice, but it takes so long to recharge that I need to supplement it other forms of detection, usually Magic Mapping, Objection (both cheap). The Amulet of ESP has become my real savior, with Scrolls of Teleport being so rare, and Staffs of Teleport costing so much. I now find myself recalling more than ever (instead of teleporting) when faced with certain nasties, since the price difference isn't that great, and the selling of an item or two in town can more than make up the difference. All it really costs me is precious, precious turns.

Progress, slow and steady. Not much in terms of improved equipment. Upgraded the shield, and traded a Ring of Protection for one of deadliness. I found a Rod of Light, and another artifact dagger, Nimthanc, but I don't know it's powers yet.

On 27.12.2008 02:18 buzzkill wrote:
Quite possibly my stupidest death ever. While on DL49, way over my head, I used my last WoR, to cancel a previously read WoR. I could have sworn I'd still have one left, but I was wrong. I did manage to find stairs, down of course, to DL50. from there I found more stairs, down of course. Not wanting to go any deeper, I wandered from the stairs in search of easy prey that might drop something useful like WoR. I found that prey in the form of Gnome Mages (and phase spiders). Well, they dropped easily, but bounced be around a bit, and eventually a Dread-master showed up. I had one teleport I could have used, but I went with the Teleport Other to get rid of the Dread, the rest were manageable. It failed several times in a row. I had recently forsaken my FA, and switched to a more effective weapon, my dagger. Eventually, something paralyzed me, probably the Silent Watcher, then someone summoned Carrion Crawlers and I never regained motion. I was picked apart very slowly by a variety of scum all the while being moved about by the remaining spiders. Throughout my entire adventure, I was NEVER able to successfully activate that damn PDSM.
