Wormtongue likes me! He dropped Aeglos at 750'. That's a nifty find for a priest: (a) Blessed, (b) lightweight and +4 DEX and +25 Dam, (c) slays all the things I'm likely to hunt while I wait for stat gain, and (d) free action. Combined with my armour of Elvenkind, this should allow me to go straight to stat gain (in spite of my slow diving to date).

I'm curious why you chose the half-elf race to play a priest.

I find stat gain boring. If it weren't for the mini-vaults, this'd be a dull game.

Given my start with Aeglos and armour of Elvenkind, I had expected to find more interest loot by this point, but my major finds have been a Helm of Telepathy (not complaining!) and Holy Infusions (the dungeon spellbook you keep at home). My resistances are still swiss cheese, and my stats are far from gained.

Why a half-elf? To be honest, when I restarted playing Angband, I random-generated a character. The computer spit out a female half-elf priestess. I've been playing them ever since with the goal of winning. I'm not sure that, after a point, it makes much of a difference. But considering that a priest's operative stats are Str, Wis, and Con... yeah, a half-elf is an odd choice.

I eventually grew tired of waiting for Constitution at stat gain and started diving with about 200 HP anyway. Kavlax breathes Nexus was an entertaining near-death. Lesser Balrogs are currently more than I can take on (so, I don't).

Also, for awhile I was carrying four different hats: Cap of Light, Cap of Seeing, Thengel, and Telepathy. I just picked up the Crown of Night and Day, so now I only need 3... plus I can resist dark :)

For other resistances, I suppose I should start carrying my armours of Elvenkind so I can cover nether.

Hold Life would be really nice. As would Godly Insights (waaay overdue!). I'm doing okay without See Invis :)

The crossbow of extra might is a good friend.

Advice is always welcome.

Why doesn't my character's level load to the Angband ladder?

I'd try to wear a couple of +3 or better con rings. You've got some money, so buy out any slot at the black market you can for less than 5K and hope for something good when it restocks. You might also want to wield Hurin, since there is not that much difference between 18/150 and 18/190 wis nor should the pointy penalty matter for the battle spells you cast at the moment IIRC.

Now at clvl 39 and 3200'.

I took PowerDiver's advice and switched to a ring of Con(+5). I carried a ring of Dam(+14) until lightning fried it. Upgrades? Shadow Cloak of Protection (shards), lt. xbow of Haradrim, and Purifications & Healing. The last was interesting, as it was guarded by time hounds. I killed a few, teleported most away, and used the spell book to repair the damage.

I'm getting to the level where chaos resist would be nice. Also, this swapping out to cover nether/nexus and telep/blind/conf is going to get me killed eventually.

A painful way to go. 4 HP. That was all. There must be a lesson here, but which one?

18/99 Con *is* different than 18/100?
If your only speed item is an Amulet of Trickery, wear it instead of Devotion (even if you are a priest)?
If you're taking out a u-shaped hallway of ogres near the screen's edge and a blink dog enters the screen just as you finish, assume that it's really Huan?
Or... don't do your killing at the edge of the screen?

Sigh... a painful death. Avoidable, surely. And my inability to acquire ANY speed surely caused my demise. As did my lack of extra Constitution sources.

On the other hand, I've learned a lot about diving. This character really should have won. I think I can dive much more quickly with the next one.

On 28.10.2008 17:33 PowerDiver wrote:
It's not the internal stats, it is the total. Effectively wisdom maxes out at 18/200, and CON of 18/200 is much better than con of 18/199. You should have worn Trickery and a ring of con instead of Barahir.

OH - that would have left you without rBlind, rDark, or rLite. Your real mistake was not playing a dwarf, or from a different perspective the difference was that you were playing a challenge game.

I wonder if you overlooked another chance. Before any long fight, a deep priest should cast resist fire and cold a couple of times even if your foes don't use fire or cold. You never know if someone will come along or be summoned.
