My best Steamguy so far. Just beat Victor Frankenstein's monster (what's up with him resisting fire???). Thankfully my spells and weapon enable me to enter "melee mode," since the monster was immune to pretty much everything I threw at him.

I really wish I knew how to improve my elemental spells farther than the 20 points in elementalism. None of the other skill descriptions seem to indicate they would lower casting fail rates or raise damage, but 9d8 lightning bolt cap is getting rapidly more useless.

I like the spellcasting enhancement spells. These have been pretty critical for me beating just about anything tough. Between Inner Demon (I think that's the name) and the Voor's spell, I can have about 500+ spell points to waste on lightning storms (and that unalterable 20% failrate). Was disappointed in my skill browsing to see I won't be able to access Cthulu Mythos, so I'm really not sure what direction I want to take my skill points.

Fun game though. Experience gain is painfully slow now. Only found a couple artifacts all game so far--could desperately use resist blindness from something. But as long as I don't get careless (German Sniper, anyone?), I should be able to keep going for a bit longer.

Doing *much* better. Not sure exactly what turned it around, maybe finding a few dungeon books and getting my skills high enough to make use of them. For awhile was using the Club of Heracles in conjunction with some melee buffing spells to nuke things, but the big negative here was the Club disrupted casting, which meant for some significantly worse fail rates. I just dealt with them as a nuisance, but once I tried that Dagger of Exigency I never looked back again. With the Stygian Combat spell in one of my dungeon books, I can get 4 attacks with the dagger, which just rips through things. Combined with various other buffing spells and I've got about 125 turns with 1000+ hp, 157 or so wound points, and around 700 spell points, plus 4 attacks a round. Between melee and stacking lightning storms I've done pretty well tearing through things. Just had a really fortunate monster pit: Serpentman Chieftains (or some such). These drop 1-2 good objects or treasures each, so 100 of them later, and I had a lot of decent loot. Mostly skill books, but these are wonderful to get when levels are hard to come by, and skill increases per level are fairly meager. I'm not too far from maxxing out my casting skills... not sure what I want to go to next. Finally diving a bit... seems getting to level 26 has taken forever, but of course picking difficult quests every time slows the game down a bit.

Had a real nice experience difficult quest: Great Domes of Perplexity, worth 20k a piece at my level. Only had I think 6 to kill but it was easy. I figured they'd breath confusion, but they never did--I wonder if the "exploit player weakness" ability is double-edged: if a monster senses a player has a resistance, it might opt for its attack less, even if the raw damage from the attack would be significant.

Fun stuff so far, hopefully I don't get impatient and stupid-death this guy.

Sweet. Managed to finish the game. Steam definitely has a significant difficulty factor, at least with casters, for the first half the game. Artifacts with various negatives makes equipment juggling a bit of a logistical challenge. Kinda prefer my choices a little more clearly, but that's just me being a bit lazy.

Lots of refreshing variety in the game. Quite a bit of work is evident from the 200 bazillion books you can find in the game, to a host of new creatures per level, etc.

Challenge-wise, and quite possibly as a result of my skill set or the items I found, the game wasn't terribly hard from levels 30 or so on down. Especially at the end, the last uniques were just easily melee'ed and dead. I was particularly cautious near the end, and started mass genocide powerdiving the last 10 levels or so.

Lots of fun overall though. Nice job Valis and the rest of the Steamband development team.

Also nice to see I haven't lost my *band touch. :)

Spellcasters are a challenge. You have excellent skill point distrubution -- that's probably one of the greatest challenges. I'm glad you found artifact balancing and swapping challenging. I'm curious about the last fight, and also, how quickly you were able to tear through things -- was everything dying near the end? Were there certain things that gave you a hard time? Was mass genocide too inexpensive? What about costs for the spells? My next playtest character is going to be a naturalist, so be sure that stuff is going to be tweaked. What was your speed at the end game, hasted/unhasted? It's higher than average due to you being a wind naturalist. Did you use wind as a teleport away attack? ('U')? Was the last fight surprising or challenging at all?

Thanks for your kind words. There has been a lot of work on the monster list. Glad that you like playing steam. I hope you give it another spin with a different character class.

Fu was a push-over. He didn't really try any special attacks.
I just melee'd him and finished him off without drinking
anything (not that I had much to drink). My speed was +48
hasted, so I had just enough to back away from him, heal
if needed, and continue.

One thing that definitely made things easier for me was the Amulet of Shadows. Unlimited Wraithform really helps.

Given the hit points of end-game monsters, I didn't have any single spell that would just eliminate something, but 10-12 spectacles of lightning or stacked Storms of Fire or Naturalist's Lightning Storm would mostly finish off anything.

Yeah, mass genocide was pretty cheap, though I really didn't make use of it until the end game.

Kinda made things easy to be able to stack that Voorish (whatever) spell enhancement spell & the Inner Demon one, though that 2nd spell came at a cost (x turns later, you'd have 0 spell points). Those two spells were pretty standard for me, as well as heroism, berserk, then Stygian combat. The other two demon spells in that book (3rd and 4th ones, demon health? and I think shield?) didn't seem to do anything with those other spells cast.

I never used the wind attack spells. I told you before it would be nice to see numbers with them somehow.

I found Moreau tougher than Fu in that he could follow me through walls.

Thanks again for the game, will follow its development and maybe try again if the itch strikes. :)
