After getting frustrated with my dream of making a Gentleman mage/martial-artist, I decided to try the Naturalist, mostly because there weren't very many on the ladder.

After a few false starts (as you can tell from his name), I finally got one going, and he's been doing quite nicely. Good mix of detection, spells and melee so far. His best spells tend to be area affect ones, so he actively seeks out pits, even the normally annoying ones, like card pits, so he can slaughter them for the experience. Blizzard doesn't do much damage, but it has a BIG radius and keeps going for a while. Bottle them up, cast blizzard, refresh it when it runs down, and before you know it the whole pit is clear.

Sadly, while working on this strategy, I realized that the Naturalist, when played correctly, is horribly, horribly unbalanced. If you've played ToME, imagine a Thaumaturgist on steroids.

In a nutshell, as long as the Naturalist doesn't currently have LOS on a monster, he can cast his area spells ANYWHERE. Combine it with lightning storm (which is significantly overpowered itself. Sometimes it'll only do a single round of lightning attacks, and when that happens monsters with good electrical resistance can survive it. However, it usually continues for several turns, and when it does that I've never seen a monster survive it, even full health uniques), and you're pretty much death on legs.

Three step process:

1) Stand somewhere you can't see any monsters
2) Cast detect monsters and spot, say, an animal pit
3) Cast lightning storm. 3 or 4 casts should be able to pretty much blanket the pit.

Tah dah. The pit is cleared and you've just gotten a whole bunch of exp.

I'm now deciding whether to turn Treekinder in the first Steamband character to hit 99m exp, or if I should instead try to win while under level 30.

Looks like the high end uniques can indeed survive lightning storm just fine, though the damage does pile up over time. Moriarty is the toughest unique killed so far, and Treekinder used burst of speed, laid down a lightning storm, a fire storm, and a blizzard, and then beat on him in melee until he died. Took a little while, but Treekinder was never in real danger.

King Kong, on the other hand, nearly killed Treekinder in just one round of melee attacks (and with a 220 AC, too!). Those damn etheric dimensional automatons are also nasty. A single guided missle knocks Treekinder to below 100 hp.

Did one round with Moreau, but picked the terrain badly and the summons got out of control, plus didn't bring along enough healing. Treekinder just upgraded to Beta Wired Reflexes, and is going to give Moreau another try.

Moreau and Fu Manchu proved troublesome, but Treekinder4 was up to the task!

The second time around, Treekinder spotted Moreau and picked a spot where Moreau's summoning would be minimized, and had to kill a high level vampire to clear the area. The vampire, helpfully, dropped the ring of Edison, which was pretty darn considerate of it. Treekinder then powered up and started whacking Moreau with spells.

By the time Moreau got into range, he was down 3 stars. Treekinder primarily used melee, occasionally refreshing the blizzard, lightning storm and fire storm that were running the whole time. Hasted, he was at speed +38, so he usually got multiple rounds for each time Moreau moved. With stoneskin up, Treekinder was AC 250 or so, and Moreau had trouble hitting him. Moreau didn't summon anything the whole battle, remarkably enough, and Treekinder eventually whittled him away. Used a few CCW to clear stun, but he mostly relied on that great healing spell. Since he was using melee most of them time, Treekinder only needed to refresh his mana once, and even that was just precautionary.

Fu Manchu was a summoning whirlwind, on the other hand. Treekinder never intentionally targeted anything other than Fu Manchu, but by the end of the battle his spells had killed 4 elemental lords, the Jabberwock, and various other summoned beasties (almost entirely elementals). In fact, he made level 38 killing Moreau, and then, despite not fighting anything between them, made level 39 during the fight with Fu Manchu.

Used the same tactics vs Fu Manchu as with Moreau. Didn't hit him as many times during the approach, because Fu Manchu teleported right to him. Cast those nasty area spells, let them do their work, and support them by beating on Fu Manchu with melee. Because of all the summoned monsters, Treekinder had to heal quite a bit and he was starting to get low on potions by the end. Fortunately, the elemental lords and various elementals primarily used elemental attacks that Treekinder was either immune to or darn close to it, so they didn't end up playing all that large a role in the battle, other than piling up exp and preventing Fu Manchu from summoning anything more dangerous.

Ooops. My mistake. 3 elemental lords, not 4. Fire, Earth, and Water.

I think that is the lowest level winner yet! For the same reasons as you I hope to soon be posting a Naturalist winner though he is of Water Lore. Tactics wise Otto V is operating much the same as Treekinder though he has no area effect fire spell.

Excellent! All hail the Naturalists!

Sadly, Treekinder is not actually the lowest level Steamband winner, though after level 35 or so, I was shooting for that honor. Stupid Iron Weeds. They give a huge amount of exp, especially considering they breed explosively.

The actual record holder is Klonk, who won at clevel38.

If I had it to do over again, I think I would have stopped raising Athletics after getting Burst of Speed, and stopped putting points into Weapon Finesse and Swift Blow after he stopped getting extra attacks, and then put those saved points into Neophyte and Standard combat. Treekinder had real trouble hitting Moreau and Fu Manchu consistently in melee, and improved to-hit bonuses might have helped those final battles considerably.

As a final though, while I recognize that Treekinder switches to Arbaces for the fight against Fu Manchu, I still can't believe that people don't just use amulets of regeneration and *regeneration* all the time. Treekinder used his for virtually the entire game, switching only for that final battle because he was using his stock of potions. Regeneration is incredibly, incredibly valuable, especially for spellcasters. At one point, when he was running around at speed +5, he'd regenerate roughly 40 sp every other turn and virtually never ran low on mana.
