Mine first serious attempt at UnAngband (first two characters died when I throwed torch in Hobbiton, grass catched fire and I burned). I don't know how to identify items, I don't know what mine Lute is doing.

But there is only eight UnAngband dumps so I will hit Top 10 with this bard, right? :)

At the moment, instruments don't have any effect unless you are an instrument specialist or they are an ego item.

As for identifying stuff, using scrolls of Detect Magic and Gauge Magic at low levels, and be prepared to sell or use unidentified items (Particularly if you have multiple types of item in your inventory).

Hint: You'll find that a number of mushrooms do not require identification...

PS: Don't rub in the number of Unangband dumps ;)

This game is full of surprises. It seems I solved first quest, killing Bill Ferny.

Bill Ferny may actually be the second or third quest (Or even later), depending on how you do things.

You can go back and do earlier quests, but you'll have to defeat another opponent to do so, one that isn't encountered in the Hobbit.

It's probably worthwhile, as you gain access to Bag End again (Your home in campaign mode). But the path is a lot more difficult this way...

At 150' of Misty Mountains, having a lot of talking with various orcs. I'm slowly getting frustrated by this variant. My main problem is tiredness. I'm STR 18/40, CON 18/70, I whack three orcs and I'm exhausted. When I whack two more, I'm paralysed! To avoid paralysing, I must stand between two orcs and get myself raped to get some rest...

Also identifying is problem - when will I get some spell for identification? I have an artifact gloves and have no idea what they do! Otherwise I like concept of having separate analyze/gauge/whatever scrolls... just if they were cheaper or more common in dungeon.

There is an option under variant save-file options called 'Move faster but get tired'. Switch off that option and you won't have a problem with tiring yourself out. To compensate you'll move at the standard Angband speed rather than at double speed.

I suspect, from the list of equipment you have, that you are carrying too much stuff. This does impact on how quickly you tire out.

And you have my permission to hack the object.txt file to make identify and *identify* as common and cheap as vanilla, if you want.

Don't forget that scrolls of Detect Magic can be used to quickly sort good from bad magic items. You should be carrying some...

BTW: The identify spell for bards is in the first dungeon book (Occurring at level 33).

Yes I'm slowed (-2) but I don't know what to drop. I will break my habits and drop some of the weapons without ID.

I'm aware of this nice feature of Detect Magic scrolls, but they cost 100 gold in store, and there were only few pieces in stock in Rivendell anyway.

Is the dungeon book fixed to level 33, or is it most common there? And, how campaign dungeons relate to regular depths? I'm at 150' of Misty Mountains now.

On 19.11.2002 18:19 andrewdoull@hotmail.com wrote:
Big hint: Don't forget that bards can learn spells from magic and prayer books. And there is a town mage book with detect magic in it that you can learn at your current level. And it's well within your price range.

BTW: Campaign dungeons just add the surface 'level' to the depth of the dungeon. eg Misty Mountains surface is level 5. So 150' in Misty is level 8.

Ah hah! I'll check magic books when I get to some next town. What about allowing player to browse books in stores (like in Ey)?

Sure. Care to code it? ;)

Got a book with Detect Magic. Life is so much easier now. Also got some other magic and prayer books, with Satisty hunger and Remove curse. Rivendell's shops had only 5 scrolls of Gauge Magic, so I'm keeping some {good} stuff for later identification. Now I would use a home. Where can I get one?

On 22.11.2002 13:59 andrewdoull@hotmail.com wrote:
Hobbiton. Of course ;) Or Angband...

Now getting there is another story...

BTW: I find its usually worth selling {good} armour and occasionally {good} weapons. This is for several reasons:

1. Unangband also has {very good} and {great} levels for non-ego items. These have correspondingly higher pluses: good is usually +1-+5 (Or combined to hit and damage of +1 to +7 for weapons).

2. The stores treat equipment pseudo-id'ed as good as +1 when selling it.

3. Gauge Magic is more useful for wands/staffs, and subtracts from your profit anyway.

4. I find its better to have empty slots to carry back more treasure than to lug around heavy, not particularly valuable armour and weapons.

Ok, I haven't leaved the town yet, so I'll sell all {good} stuff I have. What about higher level identification like ego types, hidden powers...?

On 22.11.2002 14:57 andrewdoull@hotmail.com wrote:
Ego items are {excellent}, or {superb} if they have hidden powers eg weapons of Arnor will be detected as {superb}. All levels of pseudo-id are rated for higher values (See the source).

As for determining hidden powers, experiment with wielding the weapon for a while, or use scrolls of Legend Lore or *Identify* on the item.

Detect Magic will 'overwrite' an inscription if you have already pseudo-id'ed an item.

On 22.11.2002 15:01 andrewdoull@hotmail.com wrote:
Ahem. By 'rated for higher values', I mean when you attempt to sell the item in the store.
