Troll Maceman without Magic Devices, Spells and Missile Launchers. Oath of Iron at power 30, DL8, via Throwing (for Wormy, who's luckily dead now and only consumed 64 gold and a my trusty old shovel). Lots of skills but practice penalties are avoided by killing stuff using the skill that has the penalty (currently almost only Throwing).

Currently lead shots are beginning to catch up with boulders, because they produce critical hits and hit more often. And this for a Half-Troll, who is good at boulders, but has penalties to throwing weapons (ammo included, I think). Also, throwing knives look puny compared to lead shots 2d2, because they are more expensive, much heavier, and have lower damage, though higher criticals.

Help?

Definately the whip. Elec brand adds +14 damage, which outstrips the flail's damage, and gives a resistance and an extra blow to boot.

Practice penalty will only apply to abilities that can deal damage, for you karate, wrestling, throwing, and clubbing. Speaking of which, I think you should drop 1 or 2 of your melee skills -- all 3 are in excess, and the stat pumps aren't even that good.

Also, I expect all 3 of the wizardry/holy aliiance/nature lore skills are a bit overkill, but to each his own.

On 20.6.2007 14:20 Bandobras wrote:
OK, let it be the whip then. It has lower criticals, but for monsters I really care about I will not get criticals too often at that stage. A pity to throw out such a nice Flail, however...

Call me a munchkin, but I'll stick to the skills --- I've never won any variant so I want every boost I can get No magical devices and no spells seem hard enough to me, but they are the flavour of this simple Half-Troll character, so I try to compensate with the other skills.

The whip proved very effective indeed. I wonder if the ring of Resist Acid provides any protection for the equipment. I also don't remember if resists from equipment stack in S. Not that it matters right now...

The resists are boolean, and acid resistance does reduce the damage your equipment takes.

But seriously, that whip is really nice.

Thanks for the help. The rapier of Heroism has 91% fail, otherwise I would use it as a staff of Heroism. I wonder if it improves with time. The Troll shopkeeker is very friendly, but has only 5000 gp to pay for the rapier. *sighs*

I begin to feel quests slowing me down. Moreover I tend to explore levels with "uneasy" feeling, especially if they are quite small. Fiery quest again: Nrulings on DL 16 after Himeras on DL 14 for power 41 Maceman. Good that Himeras were falling after just 2 rounds of melee.

On 23.6.2007 22:18 Bandobras wrote:
Wow, that was a nice find: potion of *Enlightment* on a "nasty" level, quaff-ided for 3000XP.

I have lots of talents already. Detect magic is my only way of making sure I've not missen an artifact on a special level. Cambeleg is my only artifact so far, dropped by Smeagol, replacing gloves of DEX +3 contributed by Wormtongue. I've also got gloves of power as a quest reward after returning home from that trip. ;) It is quite annoying that Cambeleg can be *ID* but that I get no additional information then. A waste of *ID*...

Now that quests are difficult enough I don't complain about the speed of diving, though finding downstairs is difficult for me. I wonder if the Sense Area talent detects stairs.

On 24.6.2007 05:16 camlost wrote:
Sense area is magic mapping, so yes.

Wow, what a nice find: boots of Nevrast. And I almost left this "uneasy" level when I've found down-stairs. My second artifact, but both of them are really powerful.

This means artifacts can be generated on the floor of non-special levels, so perhaps they are not lost if I don't pick them up, unlike the non-preserve mode of V? Oh, manual states that special feelings only mark ghosts, so I see that was a coincidence that I found my first artifact on a special level. Good, because I don't have to worry about missing artifacts.

Thanks for the tip about Sense Area. Now I need to pump Perception quickly. But I also want to get Weapon Forging to 50 so I can forge Throwing Hammers --- if I forge a fancy one I will use it for melee, if not, I'll throw it. Funny that Throwing Hammers are exactly as powerful (but much heavier) for throwing as Seeker Shots. I guess ego kinds are better for weapons than for ammo, though.

I love Nevrast...

I think that ranged attacks in general need a huge rewrite in an upcoming version of S. As for throwing hammers, you'll have a chance at the throwing upgrades, which I'm betting shot won't get.

I hate Silent Watchers so much! The worst thing is they make me afraid, second worst is confusion, last is summoning. I've run out of any means of curing confusion, so I guess I should abandon the quest and flee, but I've already killed 4 of them (9 more to go) and I have lots of treasure and my throwing weapons piled around the one that doesn't want to die...

I'll leave this character for a while to cool down...

You can always recall and buy up !CCW and come back down. But there's nothing wrong with abandoning quests.

This is personal, now. Me or them. :)

Don't I risk failing a quest if I recall? The suckers resist my lightning whip, I wish I hadn't sold my Flail (2d9). OTOH, I would have to enchant it all the way from (+0, +0). I really need restocking CCW and Chant, taking Invisibility with me and buying a ring of Aggravation (another thing I shouldn't have sold), or perhaps even the [91% fail] sword of Heroism to prevent fear attacks.

On 26.6.2007 00:20 Bandobras wrote:
By quaffing potions of speed and throwing boulders I've found on the level and Javelins forged at home, I managed to reduce Watchers to 4. However, these 4 are gathered in a single big room full of water and they see each other. I may be able to dig tunnels to throw at each of them unseen by others, but I won't be able to pick up my throwing gear unseen.

To add to the fun, Nar the Dwarf joined the party. I have no clue how hard he is for me, but after killing all the summons I already have 10 times more promising stuff than I will be able to carry back home. Last 2 Silent Watchers summoned a Nexus Q and some other Q that teleported away after summoning some trolls, and Haunted Helmet, who then summoned a Lucksucker, who prompty sucked my luck. Wandering confused and afraid in a room with 2 or 3 summoners is lots of fun. :D

On 26.6.2007 23:41 Bandobras wrote:
Finally, I fled the 4 Watchers that watched each other and I managed to restock at the town before the quest expired. Then I used the sword of Heroism, dug tunnels to the separated Watchers and was throwing Javelins at them, ducking whenever they confused me. I got my first stat potion reward --- DEX that gave me the 4th hit with my whip.

Now the quest Thunder Giants resist both elements of my two branded whips, so I will kill them with wresting, resorting to Javlins of Slay Giant, if needed. Right now I fight Sangahyando and Khim, with an acid vortex wandering around.

Wow, the joys of Perception! :>

I feel really stuck with such a small home and, especially, with both Temple and Weaponmaster offering max 5000 for weapons. If I could invest items in shops, not only money, this would not be a problem. As it is, I feel robbed. :) I've already invested 50000 each in the Temple and Alchemist. I only hope no rings of speed show up in the Magic shop while I'm broke...

Ack, that's a brutal inventory. Throwing seems much more of a pain early/mid game than simply using a bow -- and I suspect bow damage is just as good in those phases.

Is the added pain an attempt to balance out (what I suspect is) the superior damage caused by a high-level throwing character chucking high-level necromancer books and potions of detonations/etc.?
