Druids don't really suit my playing style, but this last one turned out pretty well. She went first to Belegost to set up camp, then went to Amon Rudh (only during the daylight) and got there day 2. Then, she dived down to level 26, leveled up, and took out Mim with martial arts (and a whole lot of potions).

Took a wrong turn at Albuquerque, and went to Nan Dungotheb instead of Nargothrond (again...). While Arrula was slogging it to Nargothrond by day, Arrula by night hit upon Moria. It was really fun to actually have a good character taking on Moria for once! Much was was had...

Then, Arrula dived to level 50 for a bit, and when she was ready, took out Glaurung-- pretty straightforward and only took a couple !oHealing and one !oRestore Mana.

Then, Arrula dived to Tol-In-Gaurhoth 60-ish, came close to finishing up stat gain, and then went back to Nan Dungortheb to take out Ungoliant. All I have to say about Nan Dungortheb is *yuck*. Ungoliant went down without much fuss though. During the process I accidentally overwrote the Tol-In-Gaurhoth recall point, and Arrula had to shlepp all the way down there again.

By this point, I was running out of time for the Angband competition (only five hours left). Found the speed boots, so I intended to dive to 85 to find a speed ring, but hit a big checkboard vault. Decided to try to find the final pieces of eq there. Cantoras was too tough to fight, so I TA him away, and was trying to go through the other uniques there to improve my score (at that point, I was unsure whether I could get to the new and improved Sauron). Arrula died due to a double move by Vecna-- we had the same nominal speed so I didn't expect a double move. Still, a good game.

Nick-- I find the druid class to be, well, strange. There are a lot of choices to be made with some nasty trade offs.

As far as casters go, although druids have some nice spells, their lack of escape methods is pretty frightening. Tele Away is good, but that looks to be pretty much it. Also, I found their magical device ability to be fairly subpar. I suspect they would be the least favorite of the casters to me (haven't tried necro yet, I def. prefer priests, and I also enjoy wand-slinging mages).

There is a real issue with dealing with Mim-- I went through a depressing number of druid characters, including fighting Mim about 6 times (one lethal, two aborted attempts). With his resists and his healing ability, Mim was very hard to kill. My successful attempts were all bare-handed kills, chugging through several heal potions to do it.

The Traveling Merchants are really really useful. It makes up for the lack of, say, !oRM that drop naturally.

I find druids hard to get started, and great in the mid game (esp. with Meditation and a Regen source). The lack of hp though is a real problem. I am not sure what to do with the shapeshift spells-- they don't work well with the bolt-slinging char. type I used here, and the low hp made be scared to use melee. If I had to do it again, I'd probably have shifted in the end game to a martial artisits with much use of the RoP and Shield songs, and prob. swap Channeling for Power Strike.

I guess when they were designed for O the high WIS characters tended to also be fairly tough - Ents, Dwarves, even Half-Trolls.
