I broke my record with this character: lowest level to win the vault quest at (18). It involved going down to 0 hp, which was exciting. Sting was in the third chamber I explored. The big problem with Sting is its light radius, but it still beats the hell out of a short sword +5/+5.

I think I'll go to the orc caves next. =)

Done a few more quests. Mimic quest gave me a very nice Rhino Hide Armor of Elvenkind: +2 stealth and res Chaos. Sting has made things pretty easy. I guess I'll try to get the scroll of Acquirement and take it to R'lyeh... yikes? Never been there before.

Last dump before I go to R'lyeh. I won't be surprised if I die, but I promised myself I'd live on edge with this character and so far it's payed off.

And 5 minutes later, he posts again. The trip to R'lyeh and back was scary as hell, and involved a fair bit of haste self, nyusin, quick walk, detect near, and teleport. I managed not to get hit with any attacks, and avoided 2 greater kraken, 2 fastitocalons, and a seahorse, any of which could have wiped the walls with me in one or two breath weapons/whirlpools/whatever.

The prize: Littlethorn, which I know from experience to be quite good (although not insanely powerful... I mean, I could have gotten an elven ring or something =). It doesn't deal as much damage as Sting, but it also doesn't have that damn light radius, which means I can use ninja stealth while wielding it. So now the choice is between the two of them, but I'm not going to figure it out now. I've had enough of Entroband for today.

You could've gotten an Orcish Pick of Digging, too ;).

Hell, it could have been a non-orcish pick of digging. =D
Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining about getting an artifact. Littlethorn is pretty decent.

Just offed Strygalldwir and the Queen Ant.

Before that I had my third truly scary experience: a Color Out of Space almost killed me. I'm sure it comes as no news to anyone who has fought them that it just followed me around as I teleported, giving me no breathing room. In the end it took a potion of *Healing* and a potion of Life to save my ass. I gained a level. =p

the CooS also dropped Black Clothes of Resistance, which is AWESOME for a ninja except that both high resists it has (poison and nether) I already have as a zombie ninja! so its not better than my res_chaos elvenkind.

Just got the Amulet of Faramir off the Greater Hell Magic Mushroom Were-Quylthulg. The stealth and the massive to-hit bonus are both very nice. Resist Confusion lets me swap out Rohirrim for Elvenkind (-res sound, +res chaos) for even more stealth, finally bringing me into [legendary] range.

perhaps the amulets tohit bonus is enough to let me start learning to dual wield. I guess i have to learn the skill eventually.

I think (I hope) I'm more or less ready for the Cloning Pits. +9 speed, 644 HP, almost every resist, legendary stealth. Damage output is still somewhat pathetic though.

I have only gotten this far a couple of times and I'm not totally sure what to do next. Old Castle still seems really (*really*) scary.

The Old Castle has been vanquished. There was only one tense moment when Zur was caught between a Lesser Balrog, Ghatanothoa, and a Greater Titan; but that was resolved with a zap of Teleport Other and a bit of Passwalling. The haul consisted of a Ring of Speed +6 and the Amulet of the Pitch Dark Night. By swapping out Sting for a Westernesse dagger, I let the amulet cancel Amber's light radius, which gives me superstealth again. If its not worth the loss of Sting I can always switch back.

I like ninjas =D

Godzilla was the hardest. It took me 10 potions of healing and 2 of *healing* to get him (although admittedly I did not play optimally). I went down to 21 hp at one point. I stubbornly fought it out because he couldn't be teleported away, and he was guarding a vault on a special level (Terror Mask was inside as it turns out.)

I've played very few Ninjas so maybe they see the world differently, but Godzilla is a top-shelf unique in terms of difficulty. Not on par with the "big 5" (Chemist, Serpent, Plain Gold Ring, Unicorn, and Morgoth), but its arguably in the next tier down (Cthulu, Vecna, Oberon, Nodens, etc.) though probably one of the weaker members of that group. Still, a very formidible opponent and MUCH tougher than anything else you've killed so far (by an even larger margin than the level gap would indicate. Godzilla's tough for its level, Corwin really isn't). Nice job.

Fortunately, he cannot summon. The other uniques you mention sound like they could have cleaned my clock. With the big atomic lizard it was just a question of chugging healing potions and getting in a blow when I could.

Daoloth, Render of the Veils put up a good fight: he summoned Saruman and Narse. Saruman in turn dropped a very nice Holy Avenger sword to replace my Holy Avenger dagger that came from Eol. I have a hard time imagining what sorts of weapons I'll be using in the end-game (provided I get that far): it seems like i'll be "uncomfortable" with all the best weapons. Sting is still serving me well, but will it be enough should it ever come to fighting the Serpent? I'll deal with that if I get there.

My character is advancing by leaps and bounds. To be honest he is advancing too fast for comfort. I'm scared that I'll just not realize my peril at some point and make a really stupid mistake. This is my best entro char so far. I'd be surprised if he won but heartbroken if he died.

Two big questions: Am I approaching equipment the wrong way? I've been very conscientious about picking weapons I was "comfortable" with, but perhaps it's time to grab Excalibur and Zantetsuken and kick ass. What has been your experience with dual-wielding ninjas?

Second: How nasty are the Spawning Pits and the Royal Crypt? What about Eric's Stronghold? My stealth is legendary[25]. Would I be throwing my life away by going in and trying to kill Eric or the Archliches? Thanks.

Don't know why you're thinking Crimson is an endgame weapon. I might be missing something, but that thing cannot do any damage thanks to the *0 multiplyer. So it's "just" the speed the steahlth and the highresist. Endgame tool, but not weapon.

Spawning Pits can turn very ugly very easy. The reward is intresting though. I think Balance DSM is the Armor I used most in endgames, however they use to drop sooner or later anyways.

@Matthias: by "weapon" i just meant something to equip in the shooter slot. I should of course just have said "shooter." The x0 means it wont fire projectiles, but the activation does seem to inflict a fair amount of damage - it knocks a star off of uniques like Brand and Eric.

Speaking of Eric, I took on his Stronghold quest and slew him. He didn't make it *too* easy, but he never came close to killing me either. Ninjas are ideally suited to that quest (i feel) because of their fantastic stealth and tracking abilities. Swap Position was the ability that let me deal the fatal blow.

The stuff in the middle did wake up eventually (when I had Eric at 3 or 4 stars), but aside from a Death Quasit, didn't really come out and bother me. They just stood around in the center of the castle throwing psycho spears at eachother. Reward was a Potion of Augmentation. My Dexterity and Constitution were already maxxed though.

I've played Entro a good bit, but almost never Ninjas (and pretty much no rogues, either), so its hard to say where you should be. For most of the characters I've played, your HP and damage output are fatally low (shouldn't you have more than 4 blows/round considering you're wearing a pair of rings of +2 attacks?), but Ninjas seem to be cut from a different cloth.

Weaponry-wise, there literally isn't a bigger fan of Songmaster than me (it was named after one of my characters, a Hengband bard who managed to kill the Serpent using a Death Scythe), but I've never seen a high level Ninja using it. Pretty much all the high level Ninjas I've seen dumps of have been dual-wielding light weapons in the end game, so I suspect that's the way to go.

Unfortunately, testing has demonstrated that I'm really better off with Sting and a Holy Avenger for now. I would love so much to get Quickthorn or Grayswandir... Somehow I get 3 blows/round with one RoEA+2 when single-wielding the scythe, and 4 blows/round with 2 RoEA+2's. Go figure.

@Matthias: Damn, that sucks that I didn't pick up the loot. I was bent upon getting out as fast as possible because there were still Black Reavers asleep, and I counted on leaving fast and getting a nice reward. I probably should have read the quest description more carefully. Thanks for the tip, next time I'll be more thorough.

It is a bit unfortunate that so many of the good ninja weapons have been removed from Entro. I'm thinking of Silver Chariot, Excalibur Jr., Merlin, etc. Heng was definitely more fun for ninjas. Heck, even the early *thanc daggers were nice.

If you can't get Quickthorn, then keep an eye out for Fiona. I think even a dagger of extra attacks would do well ...

Good Luck. I think this character is doing awesome!

I failed the Spawning Pits quest. I killed all the non-Master Q's quickly using all sorts of Nyusin and Swap Position and Chain Hook tricks. Then I killed the Master Q, but his last act was to summon Dio Brando and a Black Reaver (and some other random W's, V's, and L's.) Things quickly got out of hand, and soon the level was overrun with Greater Undead instead of Quylthulgs... Still, I killed Dio Brando and didn't lose any artifacts. I still would have liked to know what the reward would have been for a ninja.

I've been hanging around R'lyeh picking off uniques. So far I've nailed Ungoliant, Atlach-Nacha, Y'gonolac, Hypnos, and Biketal. I check each level for specialness before recalling out, and I use the Palantir to scan for uniques. I try not to wake stuff up and I don't mess around with non-unique monsters.

Is there any way to get quests in Zul? Are there any dungeons I should think about visiting?

Nice job handling the higher level side quests. Spawning Pits is an absolute beast and you did well to even survive. I believe the reward is a suit of BDSM no matter what class you are.

The quests in Zul are inaccessible to you. AFAIK, you can only get them if you are at least theoretically capable of learning the school of magic associated with each quest giver, and as a ninja, you can't do any of them.

As for other dungeons, there are 2 reasons to do them, IMO. The dungeon end bosses mostly have set rewards (none of which would terribly interest you at this point, except maybe the potion of polymorph off the Chameleon Lord), and when you face the Serpent at the end, one of its spells is Summon Dungeon Guardians.

When the Serpent casts it, it summons maybe 2-4 of the dungeon guardians. Having it summon Cthulu (plus escort), Vecna (plus escort), and Null the Living Void, can be a serious drag. If you kill off the high level guardians but leave the low ones, you get happier results. Having the Serpent waste a turn summoning Boldor (plus escort), Azog (plus escort) and the Minotaur of the Maze instead of the above ones is a happy feeling.

Don't you miss Super stealth? I know Sting rocks and Amber is a must. You really want to identify every torch, lantern and feanorian lamp you find looking for a light source of darkness. The torch is radius 1, lantern 2, and feanorian lamp 3. With Sting and Amber, you need at least a lantern. You probably are checking and are just really really pissed off about not finding one yet, but I just wanted to make sure. Sometimes the RNG can be stubborn ...

With SuperStealth restored, I typically use quickwalk tactics on monsters, only ever attacking out of super stealth for the extra attack bonuses (powerful blows and the like). I then walk to another side of the monster, and repeat. Works pretty well, except on really deep monsters which tend to spot you more readily. Also, Brian toned down the benefits of quick walk, though it still seems pretty powerful.

Nimble Zur is back in action after a hiatus in which I beat Posband. Killed a couple of uniques, including Tselakus, and swapped the Holy Avenger in for Fiona since it deals more damage. Also found a Death Scythe and stuck it in my home for the hell of it. Monsters with elemental auras *suck* because I land so many blows, none of which deals huge damage. Perhaps I need to try to regain superstealth so I can abuse hit-and-away more. Currently diving in Angband.

Yeah, those damn elemental auras are a drag, and doubly so if you don't do a lot of damage. Doubled base resists make those a lot more manageable, btw. It might also be a good idea to start planning for the Serpent. Its got 'em as well, and a boat-load of hp to work through.

The worst enemy for multiple, light attacks is probably the Chemist. I remember discussions about whether a Ninja or Monk would have any realistic chance of beating the Chemist at all. If you take down the Serpent, maybe you can find out :).

From what I've heard, the Chemist is probably the worst enemy for *any* character. Both he and the Serpent sound pretty scary to poor Zur at the moment. Well, it was one of those damn Entroband levels: Tiamat, Cantoras, the WK, the Norsa, the Defiler, Caldarm, Benedict, and some weaker uniques as well. The only ones I even messed with were Caldarm (he kept getting away), Cantoras (who took out my whole stock of ~150 CCW's before I noticed I regenerated faster than him), and the Witch-King (who was a royal pain since he kept teleporting me away). Cantoras brought me to 65 hp at one point, and there was another scary moment when a Great Wyrm of Balance breathed disenchantment when I was only wearing my swap ring by a lucky chance. If I'd switched back to my speed ring before that happened, I'd be dead now. Anyway, Cantoras rewarded me with Soulkeeper: not exactly a "ninja" item, but the healing activation will prove very handy I imagine. I stupidly let a Black Reaver disenchant Cambeleg, and it's pvalue went from +2 to +1! Arrgh! Should have worn the stupid ring!

Lessons learned: leave that ring of resist disenchantment ON. And use powershopping to obtain lots of potions, that saved my ass this level. And don't mess with Azriel when I'm low on potions (he wiped the walls with me on the previous level).

On 8.12.2006 23:07 Elliott946@aol.com wrote:
Ah, welcome to the varisty-level unique monsters. Tough foes all, except maybe the Defiler, which really isn't the league of the other ones. On paper it seems like Caldarm shouldn't really be that tough, but I generally have a lot of trouble actually killing him for some reason. Probably those damn clones of Locke that he summons.

Other than being really fast, Cantoras usually isn't that bad, but Surtur can be a beast if you get him wrong. He's only got a couple tricks, but they're good ones. If you run into the Norsa again, really try to kill it. Its a tough opponent, but elemental defenses can help, and its one of the better treasure dropping uniques in the game.

Level 50, yay. Still not dead and diving pretty briskly. Elliott, you're right: the Defiler is a total wimp. Killing him was great because A) he dropped a RoS+13 (versus +8), and B) he was wanted, and his corpse was redeemed for a potion of New Life which boosted my hp by about 50. Great rewards for an easy fight. I've also swapped in Fiona and the Pitch Dark Night for Sting, Galadriel, and Faramir, sacrificing some damage output for superstealth. Haven't really noticed any difference one way or the other, except that the new amulet activates for Darkness Storm which is nice. (firepower from Crimson, Pitch Dark Night, Laputa, and wands of Dragon's Breath makes up for lack other ranged combat methods.)

Hey Dave: usually I only use ranged attacks for a couple of rounds at a time, either to bait monsters into my uber l33t tunnel setups, of to finish off fleeing monsters. The strategy is usually: buff up, shoot with Crimson, and then duck into an advantageous melee position. I've abandoned all ranged weapons except Crimson and the Amulet, since those don't take up inventory slots.

Another one of those insane levels. Huan, Richard Wong, the Norsa, Habu, Benedict, Klingsor, Charon, the Mouth of Sauron, Charcharoth, Oremorj, the Destroyer, Raphael, Ctugha, and The Unicorn were present (and several weaker uniques as well). 3 vaults. I killed the Norsa (dropped Bullseye and some dumb randarts). I also saw a "Tanzanite Ring" in the biggest vault, and the path to it seemed remarkably clear of nasties, so I tried to make it over there. Just as I stepped on it, however, one of Ulik's earthquakes obliterated it. I guess it'll show up later (even in preserve mode off, shouldn't it come back if it was crushed by an earthquake?). Looking at known/lost artifact list, no rings show up, although apparently Anabasis was there.
