Just a post to have the honor of the first Entroband character dump.
Wahhhoooooo!

Looks like Brian decided to give me an early prize!! Thanks! (Unless Artifact Guantlets are now normal for finishing the Warg quest ;-)

Geez, I go to work and suddenly I am in last place on the ladder! What is a poor ninja to do?
I did the Orc Cave for the Ring of Ice only to discover it was a Ring of Ice and Light. I also found Aeglos in Doom Quest I and got a Chaos Channels from Smeagol.
Now where are the ninja goodies??
On 3.11.2005 05:06 chriskousky@hotmail.com wrote: (CL30 : DL34)
Things are starting to get tough for my poor little ninja. This is about the time my last ninja died, so I had better keep my wits about me.
I killed Wormtongue at DL20 of the Castle to net Rilia. I then bought an awesome rapier in the black market, only to discover that it too had the evil light up power ... too bad I spent all my gold and sold all my good items to get it.
But DL34 of the Castle is very challenging. I will try to be careful! Once I hit CL32 things might look a bit better for me ...
On 3.11.2005 05:30 chriskousky@hotmail.com wrote: (CL31:DL37)
?oArtifact Creation in the Dragon's Lair (DL32 or so). Wow! If the RNG is that charitable, I figured I would just read it immediately, rather than waiting for an Elven Cloak +4 or something similar. So I gain "Ninja's Shadow". If I was smarter, I would have recalled to town to gain a Main Gauche ... Oh well. +4 Str and Stealth is not too bad, and the game is early.
BTW, I think I like the new Dragon's Lair ;-)
On 3.11.2005 06:35 chriskousky@hotmail.com wrote: (CL32:Cloning Pits)
Went in at CL31. I really really really don't recommend you try this ;-) Wow! I knew I was in trouble when the Jurts seemed tough. The problem is that I dish out maybe 120hp per round and I don't dare use Berserk in here, lest I wake up too much.
But I have perservered. Only 2 queen ants and Fasolts remain!
On 3.11.2005 06:54 chriskousky@hotmail.com wrote: (CL33:Cloning Pits)
Success. Random monsters included a Star Vampire and the Greater Hell Magic Mushroom Were-Quythlyug. Pretty tame. Still, things were tough in there. My hp were fairly high going in (420) and even higher coming out (540) thanks to a +3 Crown of Might. That and Shiva's represent the only equipment gains. Eorlinas and Anarion were sold.
Of course I pose with Berserk, Heroism and Holy Chant going ...
Now I think I shall return to the Dragon's Lair. Hide in Mud is now 1% failure (it was 22% which was my impetus for attempting the quest so early ... pure stupidity ;-) so things are looking up. Damage output is still poor unless I Berserk (+9 to damage). Lets hope for some cool Ninja goodies!
On 3.11.2005 07:37 chriskousky@hotmail.com wrote: (CL35:DL42)
OK, this ninja is starting to look more formidable. This happens when ninjas hit higher and higher levels. They start to gain more critical hits, and more fatal blows. Itagast was the last to fall, and it harkens me back to the Dragon's Lair of old.
On 3.11.2005 20:03 bcbarnes wrote: have you found a helm of darkness yet? how useful would that be, anyway? for argument's sake, let's say you don't need the stat bonuses from a crown of might.
On 3.11.2005 22:20 chriskousky@hotmail.com wrote: Did you remove them? ;-)
No helms of darkness yet. No light sources of darkness either. At the moment, this is no sweat, as I don't have anything that lights up. I suppose I would go get Sting if I could use it. The other thing that Ninja's like to use is the Golden Crown of Amber, so obviously a helm of darkness won't help with that.
Occasionally there might be some rand-art that lights up. But by and large, Sting and Amber are the 2 things that ninjas would really like darkness for. I think one of the amulets also lights up (Dwarves maybe?).
On 3.11.2005 23:19 chriskousky@hotmail.com wrote: (CL38: DL50 Lair)
I found a Ring of Speed +8 just laying on the ground. While I still need some resistance holes plugged, I'm starting to feel pretty good about this Ninja. A certain rapier would allow me to do the happiest dance ever seen ;-)
I think I will need to do the Old Castle soon, as darkness resistance is starting to become a threat. Of course, Pitch Black Night will allow Sting as well, so maybe it is time?
On 4.11.2005 00:34 chriskousky@hotmail.com wrote: (CL39:DL56)
I quest for Kenshirou. Probably, he is not killable for me. Ninjas, while powerful, really cannot handle certain foes, and this is probably one of them. I will keep trying, but the level is also very tough, with Fundin, a Solar and Kenshirou on the side of good battling Saurumon, a Bloodthirster, a Nycadeamon, and a Loigor on the side of evil. Many many summons, and I am running out of safe spots on the level.
On a positive note, there was a Feanorian Lamp of Darkness on the level :-) (Not much use for it at the moment, though ...)
On 4.11.2005 00:41 chriskousky@hotmail.com wrote: OK, I got him. It was tough, but Berserk is quite the powerful ability for a Ninja (Battles like this are tough because I try to play without using healing ... Obviously, 10 !oHealing would have made the battle trivial :-)
Black Clothes of Elvenkind were the prize ...
On 4.11.2005 01:56 chriskousky@hotmail.com wrote: (CL40 : DL61)
Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes!
Its probably been 5 or so winners since I actually got Amber from a source other than Oberon! Yes! The Easy Activate Healing is very very nice ...
On 4.11.2005 02:45 chriskousky@hotmail.com wrote: (CL42:DL68)
Ninjas do need a few fixed items for power. Fiona is one of them! I really want the *thorn combo, but I could learn to live without it ;-)
On 4.11.2005 04:45 chriskousky@hotmail.com wrote: (CL45:DL72)
Clearly I am the most addicted player of the Entroband bunch ...
I want Tiamat. For some reason, I feel like she is carrying a 1d7 rapier. Could it be true? In the meantime, I've managed to cover all resistances save Sound (which really really hurts, btw) and have decent speed and stats to boot. A certain gun would be welcome (Brand is already dead ... so no crossbow).
CL45 is very nice milestone for a Ninja. Suddenly, they "enlighten" the level with Detect Near, and this really helps with the thievery. I should be able to spot the rapier if it shows up ...
On 4.11.2005 06:18 chriskousky@hotmail.com wrote: (CL47:DL88)
Just killed Gothmog. I'm really glad I drew the easiest possible DL88 quest because even this was very tough. Lots of Cyberdemons roaming about.
But now I shuffled equipment to cover all resistances. That and an extra +10 speed from Gothmog have made an impact.
Go, Ninja! Go!

your life monk would have a little more trouble with the chemist now, by the way. if your ninja defeats him, I want details of the fight!
hmm, you have quite a stock of *healing* potions. I may have made them too common. when did you notice yourself collecting them? at what dlevel? did you scum for them in shops at all? in hengband 1.6.x, how many would you expect to have stored around now?
On 4.11.2005 18:27 chriskousky@hotmail.com wrote: Yes, I hear you fixed the Monk Stun problem. It might be a while before I check it out for you, though, as I don't like to play back to back characters of the same type too much.
I am stockpiling *Healing* because I am just too weak to take a lot of stuff, and this will be my only hope of winning the game, I think. Or perhaps I am being overcautious ;-) (BTW, I had a lot in Heng too, check out Gaffer, my Hobbit MindCrafter)
But the thing is, there are just so many uniques to kill. The potions you see are what I have picked up simply waiting for uniques to show. I have at least 100 more uniques to kill, so my stockpile should grow. I figure the Chemist might require 20 or so *Healing*, if I can kill him at all. We will see ...
Where are the mushrooms? Are they more rare now?

Finally made CL50. Still lots to kill ... Tulscha nearly got me, so I've become even more cautious, if you can believe that! Oremorj and Shuma-Gorath join the high level dead unique party.
And I think the problem with mushrooms of restoring is that their image is totally black. They are practically invisible to the naked eye!! I just edited the 8x8 image file so now I can actually see them laying on the ground.
On 4.11.2005 20:08 chriskousky@hotmail.com wrote: I should add that there are indeed *way* too many vaults. Not quite every level, but probably 90% of the levels have at least 1 vault. Many have 2 or 3. It makes the game quite tedious, even though I am playing with Preserve mode on and have started just ignoring them.
On 4.11.2005 20:44 elrosk@gmail.com wrote: I find that turning small levels on lowers the frequency of vaults (and speeds up gameplay a fair amount, at least for me, at the risk of less monster-free teleport space).
That BDSM looks incredible. Perhaps the number of vaults you're seeing is increasing the frequency of *Healing* you've found. I _wish_ my character had found as many, but I tend to play with small rooms enabled most of the time, changing the setting for purposes of kill the Serpent (need lots of space to teleport around for that battle and avoid summons/etc).
On 4.11.2005 20:56 chriskousky@hotmail.com wrote: (CL50: Really Buff Pose)
Obviously, 90% was just a number I picked out of the air ... but I have seen 3 Greater Pattern Vaults so far, which is more than I have ever seen in all my non-unusual room Hengband characters.
Most *Healing* comes from outside of vaults. In my experience, actually retrieving potions from inside vaults is futile ... They get shattered or destroyed before you can get to them.
Fingolfin joins the kit, courtesy of Cantoras who joins the dead unique party. Black Reaver kill count stands at 4.

A new weapon! I choose Musashi over Sting because of the increased plusses to hit. I am still unskilled with the Wakizashi, and am alread +36 better to hit then with Sting.
Quickthorn?? Are you listening?? I will treat you right if you show up!!

Well, the King of Amber is slain. I brought a lot of !oHealing and !o*Healing* and did not use any. Perhaps I collected too many?
At any rate, I got Colluin for my troubles ... a bit too late if you ask me.

On 5.11.2005 04:05 chriskousky@hotmail.com wrote: Chemist is down! Screen shot attached!!
Man, you really beefed him up. 30,000 hp?? Wow! He is by far tougher than the Serpent, though perhaps if I had killed Raphael before the start it would not have been so bad. And he stops the time??? Come, on, that is just sick! Still, he is dead (again), though this time I must say that I most definitely, certainly, "Noticed his Presence".
What a monstrosisty!!!! ;-)
Now for the arena ...
On 5.11.2005 04:35 chriskousky@hotmail.com wrote: Nope. You really need immunities for the arena. 300+ hp of damage just from the auras of the GWoP. He breathed when he could not see me ... Oh well.
"Two out of three ain't bad!"

GWoP got me in the arena though. But the chemist, boy was that a joy to kill ;-)
On 5.11.2005 04:38 elrosk@gmail.com wrote: Congrats on a much more legit win over the chemist. Hearing "by far tougher than the Serpent" scares me. And yes, stopping time with the type of damage output I expect he must have does indeed sound sick and twisted!
On 5.11.2005 04:50 elrosk@gmail.com wrote: Ouch, sorry you lost in the arena... judging from posting times is looks like we tried the GWoP right about the same time.
Without immunities, I think the best chance to kill the GWoP as a melee character is with the needle... as you pointed out, those auras just do way too much damage.
On 5.11.2005 04:52 chriskousky@hotmail.com wrote: Thanks, but I see you already bested me in the Arena, completing Brian's challenge (despite a late qualifying withdrawal that we upgrade to 1.7.1 ;-)
BTW, the technique you used has proved fruitfull to me against Oberon in the past. If I could have got the Chemist that way, I surely would have!!!!

Well, here are some misc. reflections:
[1] The Arena: For a ninja, Kawarimi and the Poison Needle should have been used. I don't know why I thought I could handle the GWoP with conventional weaponry ... Pure Stupidity! But that is what I get for ignoring the Arena in most of my characters. I think I will return to this, as Arena considerations tend to influence my class and realm selections, and I would rather be free to choose what I wish.
[2] The Ninja Nerf: Decreasing the power of quickwalk is probably good. I don't think this would have impacted the 2 major battles though, as I tend to use Nyusin (a rush attack spell) more than quick walk. I must confess to peaking at what artifacts were removed from the game, and you did remove the most powerful ninja weapon (probably a bigger nerf, though I am not sure you intended it?).
[3] The Chemist. OK, maybe not "much tougher than the Serpent" but certainly in the same league. I was really worried about the Stop Time in combo with some super offensive stuff. He also hits pretty hard and moves insanely fast. Still, he does not drain charges, so one can simply haul down their pile of healing staves to do the job. I went thru 32 charges (I think) as well as multiple potions. But the chemist is good, and I think most of my characters will pay him the same mind they pay the unicorn, i.e. avoidance.
[4] Morgoth: He has now been released from his DL100 prison to show up early and torment unsuspecting adventurers. Kill him before facing the Serpent, as he can no longer be teleported.
[5] New Artifacts: Only Bullseye this time.
[6] Dungeon Tweaks: Changing the starting level for the Dragon's Lair is a very intelligent way to deal with stair scumming. I still enjoyed the dungeon, however, as it is now a good place to do stat gain, though the terain is annoying as always. But Mature dragons are worth 1,500xp or so and scarcely put up a fight.
