I found out that Uruk bands were too hard for my character, so I made a dungeon romp through the lower levels for a bit of an easier time. Then at 200' I get a good feeling, and I find a boots of speed +9! (I've never seen a speed item at such a low dungeon level)

The War Hammer Ghal Maraz is just an improved dice weapon I bought. Lead filled mace at a lower weight, just perfect for a low level paladin. :)

Dwarfs make for great paladins, bonuses on the important stats, and innate blind resist is very powerful.

I think with the recent find this character might do quite well.

I just love playing this character. Found my very first whip of the Balrog and it rocks! The stealth penalty really isn't a bad thing for my character. Will have to find a replacement weapon for demon fighting though.

I could probably dive faster, especially now that I've found a confusion resist helmet. The only thing that could ruin my day is paralysis, so I should find a glove of free action soon.

Why don't you change the ring of aggrav to the ring of free action?
That depth without free action is like asking to be killed. I can't remember aggravation doing something different in O compared to other variants, so why are you even carrying it?

Yes, after I posted the character I saw I had a ring of free action at home. Durr.

Replaced the ring of aggravation with ring of FA. Was carrying the aggravation ring for resist fear (being afraid is mega annoying for a melee character). To deal with fear, I'm carrying Berserk potions around - I find that with my excellent saving throw I'm rarely afraid to attack stuff anyway.

OMG - I never realised aggravation gave RFear. I was always just amazed anyone would want to use one...

Same here, not sure if I would want to live with arrgrevation just for having res fear though.
Heroism potions are sold in the temple (berserk aren't), give res fear for some 50 turns (good for ghosts that hit for fear), and should be carried as a warrior anyway for fight boosting.

Well, a dwarven paladin's stealth is Very Bad to start with (never mind the Balrog whip), so aggravation isn't too bad. One boon of aggravation is that breeders (mice / lice) often try to attack you instead of breed. The ultimate reason for getting that ring was purely financial: for the price of two heroism potions, I can get a permament resist fear item. Perhaps I would play otherwise, if heroism potions weren't so expensive, or if they were dropped more often.

Of course, now that I'm at a depth that {excellent} items drop regularly, money is less of an issue and potions become viable again. :)

Encounters with Mim and his kind disenchanted a bunch of my stuff. Annoying, but I'll find better equipment eventually.

Found Orome which is like a Holy Avenger sans Slay Evil, but still a pretty nifty weapon as it gives me ~40 mana. Thranduil is also very useful. I should be able to dive a bit, but haven't had the time to play.

Finally have enough wisdom to rely on OoD. At what depth should I expect the next paladin books?

On 5.9.2006 17:13 Dominic wrote:

Ran into Harowen and Errata and learnt the hard way I wasn't ready for them yet. ;)

Harowen was too fast, and Errata brought me to 12HP! OoD didn't hurt them one bit, and melee was hopeless. Ran away from that level - I'm pretty sure they came with a minor vault so I won't meet them again soon... I hope.

Gained 50 mana from Clvl 40 to 41 by quaffing potions and equipment. Although OoD doesn't do much damage, I can afford to blast it without running into problems soon. Protection from Evil and the temporary resist spells are nice.

I could use Nether protection now, as I've sighted the first Drakolisk. Randart gloves of Atholle give +3 to Magic Item Mastery. As for now, I'm looking for better equipment and still need to finish statgain.

OOO, a paladin :)
With my paladins i´ve rarely relied on OoD... that is about half the power the priests, costing relatively to max mana, the same mana... Only for fleeing crits or breeds.
Paladins are the best melee (yes, better than warriors) and worst ranged IMHO...
Kinda.. the last book is rare, found deep ~9x, but it is also the most useful one for paladins. The fifth can be found at ~dlvl 6x... but i dunno how the new drop system affected this... didnt play deep chars a lot in 1.10.
EMagic is THE top spec with melee, only for palas... lots of straight damage added from buffs per attack... try it someday ;)

With your specs, i think your char is a really good heavy weapon wielder... MoDs...
Hope you find Deathwreker :)
Good luck
