Playing a Gnome Paladin - surviving the early dungeon was very tough for a melee character with few HP. Had to teleport out quite a lot of times. The rods of bolts made the character considerably more powerful. The Flail of Freezing is a very recent find, before that I had to make do with only a {good} Flail.

Shield Mastery has been very useful for giving me more armor, and now for getting me more and better shield bashes. Holy Light's effect is very subtle, I can't really tell if it makes a diference or not. I'm sure it will get better when I find a better weapon. The +1 light is nice but doesn't have a big impact on how I play.

Found a Holy Avenger sword, which is nice. At the moment, I can learn more spells than Exorcism and Dispelling allows me to; guess I need to find more books. My melee is decent, the magic device use is decent (but I wouldn't call it reliable), need more HP.

Detect evil is nice, I use it a lot. The temporary elemental resist spells are great, and the Protection from Evil sees much use. If I have some mana to spare, Orb of Draining can help soften up some evil-doers.

Life is good, if I don't pull stupid stunts.

IMHO Holy Light is in the tier of Fast Attacking... matter of choice... IMHO the must picks with Palas are Enhance Magic and Shield Mastery... EM is real nice with mages, but with melee, EM glows like a supernova! (look what it does to Heroism/Berzerk/Speed...)

In my experience with O, the RNG being upset results in sudden horrible death, plus death of the next two characters before level 10.

Also found a ring of Strength +6 at the Black Market, which I purchased. With my weapon and current Dexterity it doesn't give me more blows, sadly, but until then it works as a Ring of Deadliness +18. :)

I think I may have stumbled upon a bug, though I'm not sure if it's coincidence. Stat potions seem only to generate as Strength potions (and the rare Charisma potion). Ran into Uvatha who black breathed me (I just read he's a 3000' unique) - obviously I haven't found athelas to get rid of it. Great. Was fighting a warlord but couldn't put a dent in him. I quaffed a healing potion, but got myself acidballed for 2/3 of my HP. Teleported out, then found out Waldern was around the corner camping for some adventurer noobs.
