Well -- I never said I wouldn't shop-scum like mad, just that I wouldn't use artifacts!

So I finally decided to post this guy upon the acquisition of my dragon helm that covered disenchant and nether, the two things I was bringing spares to cover while in the dungeon. I killed a lot of things, so I don't know what dropped it. I was on Dragon's Lair 60.

Note my excellent selection of footwear. :) I can cover a lot of (single) different things with various boots of lev. I have boots of speed +3, but I have perfect coverage at the moment, and I'm basking in it. Maybe later I'll cover an additional resistance somewhere else and be able to switch in boots of speed. Hopefully better ones than I have in my home. I am eagerly awaiting my 7th attack. It has to be coming very soon, as a monk at level 50 with like 18/160 dex gets _8_ attacks a round, so with my near max dex I should be getting my 7th soon.

Yeah! Really good job getting all resists up. I guess a more scummy playstyle might be necessary on this one. I never shopscummed, but I also never saw the need to do it.

Don't think you really do need all resistances. Stuff like sound and shards can likely be ignored. On the other hand... All res, speed almost 20, good hp, good damage... Not much between you and endgame-ready

On 25.7.2006 01:01 stile@imsa.edu wrote:
Haha, I've never scummed like this before. But the sad truth was it was kind of fun. I got into a rhythm and went crazy. It's amusing the potion amounts I have from it, and 2 staves of healing, etc etc.

Normally you'd never need or want to scum that much, because the artifacts you find will be better anyway than the stuff you scum. The dragon stuff I've found in dungeons is easily better than the stuff I found in shops, but the various shop crap allowed me to fill in whatever resists were left.

I had that sweet +7 stealth cloak I used for a long time and had great stealth with it. But I finally needed to cover dark/light for sure.

And I don't know about not having sound and shards covered. I've had Mycen nearly kill me on a couple different characters leaving sound off. And shards... I dunno.

Thanks Dave.

Hm. I disagree with you Mat. I think certain resistance can be dropped, but the ones I think can be dropped are RLight and RNether, and to a smaller extent RNexus Only angels do big Light attacks, and Nether isn't extremely high protection. Nexus can be annoying because of the enemy Teleport Level spell.

RSound and RShard are pretty critical, the former to prevent stunning/shattering of potions, and the latter because of the Rockets fired by all the Cyberdemons.

Clvl 42 (7 attacks a round) Dlvl 64.

Just posting the nice 7 attacks a round and taking a break. I'm keeping weird hours and I played this a ridiculous amount of near straight hours. I'd like a few better eq things, but I bet I could _almost_ win with the stuff as it is at level 50. I'd only have +19 speed though. I really need to find some better boots of speed. The ones I currently have are only +3 which would bring it up to 22 base. I have a sick number of speed potions stocked up, so that's no problem for the serpent, no matter how many times he dispels magic. Anyway, gonna break and play fresh tomorrow.

Oh, and I wholeheartedly agree that light is the one I leave off until the very end, just about. It's just the sky drakes scare me when I see one coming around the corner and I've left light off. Nether I rarely leave off, though it's probably a scare thing with me. It seems to do such serious damage (to me). I detest all the secondary effects of sound, the stunning and potion destruction. I'd almost leave off shards after light if I HAD to, but I'd be easy meat to any cyberdemon or perhaps if multiple GWoL were all over me. It's also so disheartening to get a gaping wound if you don't have resist shards. :)

But isn't the whole point of playing such a character to learn to play with less? Sure cyberdemons can rocket you, but do you have to fight cyberdemons. And if you really feel like attacking one, wouldn't you know that at least one turn earlier enough to switch around things?

On the scumming: I guess we all agree that one can wizard good enough non-Artefact equipment to make an endgame-able character, more or less for every class out there. But getting there is probably the even greater task. For example entering RoS area without base speed of let's say 10 is suicide, especially if you can't tele and can't use speed staves. This problem could be solved by a lucky drop or intensive scumming, but imo the second option doesn't work together with the idea of a challenge character.

ah wait just to prevent missunderstandings: I'm not criticising your playstyle here. I don't think there is a way to do this without scumming in one or the other way. Waiting for a lucky speed boots drop at 40 could be considered the same thing

On a side note, I did find my boots of speed at depth 43, and rather quickly, but they're only +3. As far as what you're saying... I would agree you have to either shop-scum or "scum" killing a ton of monsters to try to fill up your resistances. I doubt I'd scum like this again, but it was kinda fun. Normally I "scum" by monster killing a ton, usually around depth 60-70 in dragon's lair before going back to angband.

But that's kind of my (normal) style of play. I realize I'm not trying to win the fastest, but to me, finding fun and interesting items is a large part of the fun. I like my characters to be powerful before they win, at the expense of a lot more play. I respect the people on here who win far more minimalistic or quickly. I just don't play like that normally.

The third option would be diving and scumming for a speed ring on ground. Did that in the NPP artefactless competition. But that character was a high stealth hobbit rogue...

With stealthy characters that is indeed an option. I'm toying with the idea of just going to level after level and enlightenment-ing and grabbing any dragon armor and leaving the level. I haven't started doing it yet, but I might.

I've found a lot of useless dragon armor in the past hour or two, hah.

I'm realizing that I really do need to use a crown of might for the serpent, a bit for the con, but more for the sustain str/dex/con, which I obviously have no other way of sustaining. I did just find my first crown of might, sadly it's resist is light, but I'll still be using it if I can cover the rest in other armors. Must. Find. More. Dragon. Armors. :)

Right as I posted that last one, I got a much better dragon helm. Covers PoDkBlNtCaDi. That's all my old one did plus Ca and Dk mainly. Ca is big, Dk might be nice if I can get light randomly somewhere else to get off a shadow cloak if I want. I'm throwing in my "huge" +3 speed boots now.

Clvl 48 Dlvl 70.

Got 8th attack a round at level 48. I also shifted eq around again. This time to get off using a shield. I wanted to see how much going from 60s to 90s in hit helps. I had to lose the +3 speed on the boots, but I want to try this out.

I had just had this thought before going after the serpent. The thought was this. I really should use scrolls of teleport, though normally I use the teleport mutation. The obvious reason was there's like a 3 percent failure rate.

Guess what? When I have the serpent down to 2 stars, what should happen? My teleport fails and I die a fiery death.

Sigh. Mistakes mistakes... I ended up saying screw the crown since I couldn't cover the resists and just brought lots of restore stat potions and mushrooms of restoration.

It was all working great -- until I failed a teleport away. Oh well, the race is on, go get 'em boys. MundaneJR had it in his grasp, but not using teleport scrolls for the final battle did him in.

Oh, an amusing aside. I actually USED that teleport down to whatever depth you want for 1 mil cash. I didn't feel like bothering to dive down myself. That's why it shows me failing all those quests. :)

Time to break out the fucked up combos. I feel an Ent High Mage coming on the scene. Ent because at level 50 they get a total of +5 con and are 0 int so not a negative. High mage because while I agree NORMALLY they aren't better than mage, try getting a normal mage to 0 percent fail mana storm with no artifacts. I dare you.

And seemingly the vulnerable to fire is only 4/3rds. What's an extra third amoung friends?

Argh sooo close, that's the RNG in all his glory I guess. Good luck on the High Mage... Getting hp up might be one of the problems with that one. If you end up with only 900 hp at 18/220cons and lvl50, you'll have to cover *very* low hps while getting there. On the other hand, once *destruction* is low on fail you can concentrate on the things you can kill with low risk.

Btw, what's the funniest monster pit you've ever seen? I recently saw an entire room full of Radiation Eyes (in R'lyeh), a level 3 monster. It was terrifying.
