Been mucking around with Hobbits as Monks and they do nicely. After a bit of scumming to get a decent start on STR and DEX Oakbane (Pious Hobbit Life Monk) is up and running.

He's doing ok as he picked up two randarts in mid 20's which have added +6 to his base speed (+9 total with Monk bonus) and both add +hit and +damage. Still 4 blows at this stage for 216 damage is not enough for Cloning Pits and I don't want to risk him on Angband 38 Quest for the moment.

He's got @11 staves of speed from scumming the town BM's so he's got plenty of speed for the Pits when he gets his 5th blow.

We'll see what happens...

He undertook Pits at Chlvl 34 @352 damage with his kit at the time and came out at Chlvl 35 with his major kit upgrade consisting of Anarion. It was very quite and all of the troublesome south part of the screen (Jurts, It's, Gachapin's, Bokgrugs) etc died without summons. The Ant Queens summoned a little bit but not much and everything as looking good for an extremely easy finish when Oakbane almost killed himself checking out loot as he stepped next to Stormbringer which took him down to @100 hps with a Nasty Gash. He survived and after teleporting away twice and then hurrying back to the naughty sword he managed to finish it off.

Old Castle Quest went swimmingly with only one of the Lesser Titans summoning some minor critters once. The Greater Titans fell easily thanks to scrolls of Confusion as well as stunning and being at +22 speed when buffed. He was only doing @325 damage at this point but it was still enough to get through.

After the Old Castle Quest at Chlvl 36 he now has 6 blows (thanks to Shiva's Jacket - is there a better class reward in the game?) and with the Torque of Boromir (also picked up in the Old Castle) and a second Ring of Damage being employed as Anarion cannot be used in parallel with Shiva's Jacket he's now dishing out double the damage (6 blows for 612 damage). Time to go level up some more in the Dragon's Lair. He is missing quite a few resistes but what the hell.

And the Dragon's Lair (favourite mid Chlvl 30's to early 40's) has provided for Oakbane even though he hasn't ventured that deep. Belthronding and Thorin in quick sucession means that he has a bunch more hps, improved AC and only has one res hole - Light. He carries a spare ring of light/darkness for this but life for a Monk at this level doesn't get much better. Time to do the Royal Crypt and Eric's Stronghold I think.

I never do Eric's Stronghold anymore. I think the quest got broken when code was added to make good and evil monster fight each other. Nowadays, its just an epic summoning storm ... Somebody should fix this quest (Remove the Ultra-elite paladins! Eric is evil, so what are they doing there?)
