Mox has just cleaned up several quests and arena monsters, and is ready to dive again. holding off on the vault at least until i have some more hp and poison resistance.
question: i hear that R'lyeh is the place to read those scrolls of acquirement... i once tried to swim over there with another character and got massacred by krakens. what is the best way to get there? maybe just stock way up on teleport and pray for the best?
on another note, why does the tower quest come after the vault when the tower is just so much easier?
On 20.6.2006 00:41 [clvl 26] [dlvl 24] wrote: dark elven lords quest was a big mess, took a !healing and a lot of ccw. gained a level but nothing else good. flame arrows helped a lot.

On 20.6.2006 01:41 Elliott946@aol.com wrote: Hi! I always liked the concept of WeaponSmiths (I think my very first Heng character was one) but could never get one going.
R'lyeh is indeed the place to go to read Acquisition and *Acquisition* scrolls. That having been said, its a place of significant peril to visit. Obviously, you need levitation to even try, and without really good detection, you will likely be roadkill very quickly. Once you've got that covered, you are still likely going to have a fairly high fatality rate on your attempts there. there are two schools of thought:
1) Go early, go often. Some of the folks who have mentioned this tactic are, ahem, more experienced at playing various 'Bands than is likely healthy for them. As such, they can grab that first acquisition scroll pretty quickly. Doing it fast means not much time invested in the character, so if a greater kraken eats them on the way, well, so what? You've likely only invested oh, 70 minutes of time in that character, so its not a great loss. Should that character luck out and snare a ring of speed, it will hugely impact that character's development trajectory, more than making up for the time lost by the kraken-bait.
2) Hoard the scroll and be careful. Wait until, oh, level 30ish when you have a decent chance of survival.
Of course, the Dark Cave is always available for characters unlikely to survive the trip.
On 20.6.2006 03:38 djabanete@gmail.com wrote: Hi Elliott, thanks for your input. As you can see i ended up just going into the dark cave, and the result was decent but not spectacular - a cloak of electricity.
I just did the Vault quest, which was pretty nerve-wracking. Sting was in the last section i explored. The vault contained an Ancient Green Dragon and Gachapin, and i had to kill them both with no resist poison (only a single !Resistance). I think that one breath when i was off-guard would have done me in. I would have liked to clear the vault, but a puny little ring mimic summoned so much crap (including a Lesser Hell-Beast which i did manage to kill) that i had to recall out with Sting and Gachapin's {wanted} corpse. I lost all my good potions and my arrows of holy might.
still, Sting is a damn good sword =D
On 20.6.2006 06:33 dzhang@its.caltech.edu wrote: Sting is indeed a great weapon, so much so that I always intentionally abandon the Logrus Master Quest these days to grab it early (around clvl 20). With relatively good stealth (i.e. around Superb), you should be able to pick up Sting and Recall out with 2 !oSpeed, 1 !oHealing, and lots of !oCCW and ?oTeleport successfully at least 80% of the time.
Elliot, were you refering to me? ^^ My view is that even if you're a early 30ish character, you can still get fried by a full-power breath from a Fasti-something-or-other (the blue 'D' that breathes acid), even with RAcid.
And you really need to think about potential risk vs reward. ?oAcq, while sometimes yields great things like RoSpeed and Anabasis, more often than not produces an ego item or a 3rd level spellbook. At level 20ish, this might actually be useful (either for the gold, or for RBase, or if you're really lucky, the actual spellbook you need). By mid-30's 99% of the time, the item gets auto-destroyed.
So my view is that *always* read it the ?oAcq early.. if you don't want to risk Ry'leh, go Dark Cave, but never hoard (until past clvl 40ish).
On 20.6.2006 17:09 Elliott946@aol.com wrote: Oh, I wasn't intending that towards anyone in particular, Dave, though, yes, I'd include you in that group (and me, too, plus Chris and a couple others. Speaking of which, it looks like we're all kinda gravitating back here after a few months of doing various other things).
In terms of overall strategy, I do pretty much always go early as well. The potential for big gains is larger, plus, its like a big chunk of found money. Its hard to let it just sit there. Tends to burn a hole in your pocket.
If the character has any chance of reaching R'lyeh, then I pile on the teleport scrolls and then proceed as carefully as possible. If its, say, a weaponmaster who doesn't really have a shot, then I go to the Dark Caves. The only time I'd wait is if the character will gain some nifty new ability that will likely significantly improve his chance of surviving the trip (haste, better detection, etc.) in the next few levels. Then I'd wait for that milestone.
Plus, as Dave notes, the trip is hazardous for ANYONE. Level 30 is safer than level 22 or whatever, but the trip is still hazardous for level 50 characters, so its all a question of comfort level.

just failed Bull Gates quest. i guess i've been playing too many berzerkers, because i seem to recall the internet exploders doing a lot less damage. Oh well, i still gained a level and got a nice ring mail of elvenkind (rDisenchant).
also cleared the Labyrinth (*yawn*) for the rod of recall.
I'm scared of the Cloning Pits because i have no poison resistance. 3x Gachapin and 3x Bokrug could toast me, and my stealth isn't so hot either.
On 21.6.2006 00:36 Elliott946@aol.com wrote: Probably a good idea to wait on the Cloning Pits. There's a lengthy discussion on a character post (I think its one of my characters) on the offense required to handle the Cloning Pits. Additionally, if you go back and browse the Hengband dumps of chatty people (look for dumps with, say, 30+ posts) you'll find some good discussions as well.
On 21.6.2006 00:38 Elliott946@aol.com wrote: Oh, and something you might not be aware of:
When you *ID* something, you learn everything there is to know about the item. Once you've *ID*ed it, you can inscribe the item with %all. If you want to add something else, you can put "%all, Cloning Pits" or whatever. That displays all the attributes of the item automatically. Its a real time saver.

Killed It, Borel of Hendrake {wanted}, and King Koopa. Borel dropped Caspanion and something gave me Jack of Shadows. =D poison resist finally covered, only thing missing is resist disenchantment. Caspanion gave a really nice HP boost. my offense still isn't that great though. this character just cleared his first vault (it was pretty tiny but had nice potions).
On 21.6.2006 22:08 djabanete@gmail.com wrote: RIP Mox.
Killed by Beld, Ruler of Marmo in the mid 40's of Angband. ... not to mention the classic "one more turn before i heal" syndrome. -17 hit points, such a pity. come to think of it, if that Time Elemental hadn't drained my CON, i'd still be alove and kicking...
Mox was a fun character though, since i was playing him much more aggressively than i normally do... leads to challenging and exciting game play. Mox's finest moment was killing Gachapin and an Ancient Green Dragon down in the Vault with no resist poison and a lot of luck.
next up is a Beastmaster... any race suggestions?
On 21.6.2006 23:42 Elliott946@aol.com wrote: Beastman, of course! Well, they take some getting used to, I guess, but they are by far the most interesting race in the game. They're pretty much all I play.
The high XP-penalty races irritate me because it takes so long to level that I get frustrated and end up doing something stupid. Balrogs are actually my favorite race, and I love the way they work in the game, but the XP penalty just kills me.
Another good race is half-orc. Decent starting stats, a bonus resist, nice starting bonuses for melee, and a very low XP penalty.
On 21.6.2006 23:43 Elliott946@aol.com wrote: Oh, and sorry to hear of your passing. Beld is a little tricky because he's a relatively low level unique who is fairly fast and hits like a bus. He's easy to manuver once you know what he can do, but he can smash you fast if things get out of hand.
