Well, finally got around to submitting this guy. Usually I prefer daemon magic for chaos warriors, cuz the spells seem cooler, but I am glad I went with chaos magic this time. The Sonic Boom spell is extremely useful because it stuns most enemies, which is REALLY helpful. I got the resist elements mutation, one of the most useful ones, early, and it had helped me tremendously. I also have fat + resiliant which gives me +6 Con =). Of course if I ever have to get rid of my mutations that would hit my HP hard...

I haven't bothered drinking those stat pots in my house because I am going to wait till I hit 50 to drink them, since I had maxed stats earlier by my chaos patron lowered them. Also, I might try some new life potions because my life rating is only 92/100. However, some real nice mutations I will have to think hard before I drink new life. I think with polymorph self I could get some back, but its unlikely I could get all my good ones back without getting bad ones too.

On 26.5.2006 05:07 dzhang@its.caltech.edu wrote:
Or... you could try just Polymorphing Self without the !oNewLife. That has some chance of changing your stat limits and Life Rating, without removing all your current mutations.

Well, after thinking about it some more I think I am just going to leave my stats the way they are. Now I just need to hope for better eq because, while me speed is nice and high, I still need more melee damage.

On 27.5.2006 12:19 dzhang@its.caltech.edu wrote:
That's way too much speed, actually, for your currently dlvl. I'd swap the Speed Ring for Frakir, swap Amulet of Resistance for Boromir, swap the DSM for Rohorim, and swap the RoCON for RoExtraAttack(+2).

I've consistently beat the game with about +22 speed...

Thanks for the advice. I guess I am just used to playing real-time roguelikes (Mangband and TomeNet) where more speed is always better (since you need everything that could possibly give you more reaction time). I found an absolutely fabulous +4 str, dex, con, stlth randart cloak with allowed me to swap in EA ring for con easily. I am looking for a better eq setup with less speed and more raw damage, but currently I don't really have one. All my current setups seem to involved dropping my randart dsm, but since that gives +5 damage and +4 str, it is actually hard to go significantly above my current damage without it (I would need to equip something like both fingolfin and boromir, which would be possible if I could find a law dsm). Also looking to do the random quest on 76, but that can be a real nasty unique so I think i'll wait a bit longer (I have seen the destroyer already though so I won't have to face him on quest ever)

The last two dungeon quests were fore Pazuzu and Azathoth, the former of which is a joke for his lvl. I didn't find Azathoth too hard either, but since he doesn't drain charges I was able to use healing staves when fighting him. Guess I'll look for more healing potions for awhile. Found Amber and the Jewel and did a little eq juggling otherwise so now I don't wear Fingolfin instead of the dragon gloves and avoid the mana penalty.

Getting ready to fight Oberon now. Wielding Aglarang right now. Not sure if its better than Ringil or not. Aglarang definately has more raw damage, but Ringil has +10 speed and some slays too so its a hard call. I'm also considering doing the Old Castle quest for Zarcuthra, but I've never done that quest before and don't really know what to expect.

On 30.5.2006 03:54 dzhang@its.caltech.edu wrote:
Zarcuthra is definitely not up to Aglarang's par. I personally kind of favor Aglarang over Ringil, but there's differences in playing style. How much % change is the damage?

Assuming you'll be hasted for the battles, +34 speed is like 39 or 40 energy, and +44 speed is like 43 energy, so add an extra 10% on damage for Ringil.

Old Castle isn't too hard if you're not Aggravating, and shouldn't be hard even with it at Clvl 50... (I usually do at around clvl 35-38). You occasionally find really good items in there (I've found Brand and Feanor on separate occasions in that quest).

On 30.5.2006 16:21 wacko_chipmunk@hotmail.com wrote:
Well, now I have another weapon to consider: Chainsword. I think the Chainsword is quite possibly better than Aglarang, it doesn't have +2 EA, but it is sharp! Cleaves, maims, and carves and all commonplace (with the occassional eviscerate and shred).

I've cleared up most of the deep uniques, but have, most notably, the Destroyer, the Unicorn, Raphael, and the Tarrasque left. (And some others that shouldn't be too hard). Oh and about the destroyer, I have tried him once, but for some reason I was a *fool* and didn't bring my *heal* pots with me, so I ended up getting him down to 2 stars and running out of healing pots and having to bail...so now I have to find a bunch more healing potions and seeker bolts before trying him again. As for the Unicorn, how do I kill it, or should I just leave it alone and hope the serpent doesn't summon it?

Looks like I'll probably try the Old Castle sometime, just to look at it, after I get some more healing pots...

On 30.5.2006 19:40 dzhang@its.caltech.edu wrote:
Huh. You must not have been using your mutations efficiently, because Destroyer should be a piece of cake with your current character (I'm talking like using 0 !oHealing).

Use Earthquake to disrupt LoS on most of the level before starting engagement, and then whenever low on HP, teleport (or whatever version Chaos has). Then use "Berserk on Will" to heal yourself up to max (it heals like 40HP per pop). By the time you're topping out on HP, the Destroyer will have found you again, and you can fight a little more. Rinse and repeat. Quaff a !oCCW before re-engaging so you can cast spells (i.e. to teleport), but that's not necessary since you're bringing ?oTeleport.

On 30.5.2006 19:48 dzhang@its.caltech.edu wrote:
Oops, never mind, didn't see that your mutation isn't the controlled one. Then I guess I would have brought something like 200 !oCCW with me, and used those instead. In my experience, it's almost never a good idea to use !oHealing against the final few bosses.. they can typically do more damage in a round than the potion cures.

Unicorn is pretty insane.. I remember having a couple characters who killed it, but it was always a large drain on resources (except in the case of a Mage with Death as first school).

Disintegration breath, heavy summoning, and touch-to-time are the main problems.

My experience is to avoid if you're not playing a Lazy character.. risk outweighs rewards. If the Serpent summons it, teleport away, and wait for the two to separate to some extent, and then Word of Destruction away the Unicorn.

Oh, and a few dungeon guardians should go. Namely, Great Cthulu and the Chameleon King. Everyone else is optional, also Vecna has proven annoying at times.

Ok, so I got the destroyer the second time I tried =). Also cleared the dungeon guardians you recommended:Great Cthulu, Chameleon Lord, and Vecna. I just need to hunt down a few more deep uniques that I guess I just missed: Shuma-Gorath and Omarax (and I might just go kill Layzark in the castle just for kicks). Oh, and I might still do the Old Castle.

I also finished the wanted monster list and got the artifact creation scroll. I don't have too much use for it though. I don't want to read it on my dragon boots since they could pick up some curses or AM. I maybe could do gloves, but Fingolfin is pretty good because of its +to hit and +to dam and no mana penalty. All that would be left then would probably be the diamond edge I found or one of my balance dsms. It would be unlikely that the randart diamond edge I got would best the Chainsword, but that's probably what I would try since balance dsm already has alot of resistances..although if it picked up the right ones I would be able to wear Shiva's boots.

Anyways, the next dump will probably be either a winner or a death while fighting Serpent ^_^

Actually, your odds with Diamond Edge aren't that bad. Chainsword doesn't have Slay Evil, and is expected 33 dice damage. Diamond Edge is expected 21 dice damage, so with a slay Evil is 42, already better than Chainsword.

A force-brand or an extra attacks flag, and the Diamond Edge will blow everything else out of the water (with the possible exception of Slayer).

Plus, you're guaranteed at least an additional +8 from +todam.

Nice character.

I'll second what Dave said about reading it on the Diamond Edge. Chainsword will probably still be better than whatever you get, but the chance of the Diamond Edge being better is higher than you might think. Plus, really, how many ways can you improve your kit at this stage? Not too many, so if a shot comes along at one, I'd roll the dice.

That having been said, I notice that your great boots are actually only providing rNexus and rPoison at this stage (and rNexus, IMO, is pretty small potatos at this stage of the game). If you read the scroll on your BDSM armor and it picks up rPoison, then you could swap your current boots for Shiva's Avatar (which cover rNexus), giving you a nice combat bonus and an extra bump to your speed.

Its a lower chance of being useful than reading the scroll on the Diamond Edge, but the payoff is pretty good. Even assuming you're hasted, the +4 speed from the boots is probably worth an extra 5-6% energy. Including the combat bonus, and you're looking at least 10% more damage/round.

Is that better than what you could get with the diamond edge? No. A perfect roll with the diamond edge (slay evil, extra attacks, and forcebrand) will so totally blow away the chainsword that it won't even be funny. But you probably won't get that.

Getting a mere slay evil and a +20 to-dam bonus, against the Serpent, will give you an extra 140 damage/round (an extra 17-18% damage). While you would lose the Chainsword's extra-nifty vorpal hits (Chainsword and Vorpal Blade get different vorpal effects from mere Sharp weapons), I suspect the impact would be less than the difference (though I don't actually know, and suspect it would be pretty complicated to get the exact amount).

On 1.6.2006 16:21 Elliott946@aol.com wrote:
Oh, to summarize: reading the scroll on the Diamond Edge is probably the way to go, but if you feel like going in a different direction (because you really like wielding the Chainsword, or whatever), then reading it on your armor is a viable alternative.

Ok Ok, one more dump before I fight the serpent =).

I decided that reading the art creation on a diamond blade would be my best bet, but the RNG just wasn't on my side. I even lucked out and found another art creation scroll and diamond edge in the dungeon, but the second try didn't turn out either.

However, I did do the Castle quest and got Zarcuthra, which does seem to be a nice sword. It even picked up poison as a random resist so if I wield it I can swap out my boots for Shiva...so now I'm a little stuck for wpn choice again. Since chainsword gives -2 speed, Zarcuthra + Shiva gives me 6 more speed that Chainsword setup, and more dmg vs evil too. Zarcuthra is vorpal as well (though not as vorpal as Chainsword). I'm kinda thinkin Zarcuthra might be better than Chainsword, but at this point the choice between Ringil,Chainsword, and Zarcuthra is probable one of a personal preference of what combination of speed and damage is wanted.

Wow! That's an embarassment of riches in artifact creation scrolls. Sometimes the RNG kills you cruely, but sometimes it gives you the big "thumbs up".

FWIW, you can treat vorpal effects as an extra cumulative damage multiplier to your damage dice. I worked out the math at one point, but please don't ask me to do it again ;-) The short answer is that Vorpal Blade and Chainsword have a "vorpal damage multiplier" of 5/3 or 1.67, while every other vorpal weapon has a damage multiplier of 11/9 or 1.22. In reality, the effects of a vorpal weapon are highly discrete, so you might go many rounds without any vorpal criticals only to then score 3 smites in a single round ... or something similar.

So Chainsword is 1.67 * 11d5 + 10 (unless you are fighting Oberon ;-) which is roughly 65 damage, discounting other bonuses to damage from your Str/equipment.

Let's assume you are using Zarcuthra vs. something evil like the Serpent. Then its damage is 1.22 * 2 * 4d6 + 21 or about 55 damage average. So less than Chainsword, though the -2 speed from Chainsword and smaller bonuses to hit might make that difference even less decisive.

Or you could just keep finding Diamond Edges and ?oArtifact Creation. Sooner or later you'll get something awesome ;-)
