Well, here it is. The Shadow Fairy Chaos Warrior. My plan is to bide my time until the Old Castle yields Zarcuthra, whence I will stealthily wield the awesome blade.

It took quite a while for me to get a character started, as Chardros was evil on CL2 about 6 times in a row (Statue Effect ... the whole 9 yards!). But the dice have evened out in this character who has had the Augmentation gift at CL2, CL12 and CL13. Pretty decent stat raises on the random rolls as well. Why the early post? Well, lately, posting my characters early has been beneficial :-)

Yeah Reaver but you showed some restraint coz you could've posted him at chlvl 1... :-)

Well, I'm not quite that stupid. I think I died about 15 times before I finally was able to complete the Thieves quest. The Ladder does not really need that kind of volume ;-)

Well, the Augmentation has completely dried up, but my stats are pretty good none the less. Lots of "Stay Mortal, and let me mold thee!", which is too say, more STR. I'll be picking CON at CL30 and beyond ...

Well, at this point, all the quick advancement is complete. I'm thankful for my beak, and my keen sense of stinky monsters. That and 6 attacks with Grimtooth are pretty nice. Now I really should consider the Vault, but its a bit too early for that, so I'll hang out and try to get some more HP. Perhaps if I had a Staff of Speed I might just sell out for Sting right now ...

Welcome to level 27.
You can learn 24 more spells.
The voice of Hionhurn booms out:
'Death and destruction! This pleaseth me!'
There is a searing blast of light!

Damn!! It looked like he dropped Zantetsuken as well. Double Damn!!! And without any haste self, Ishikawa was *tough* to kill, dishing out as much as 200hp in a single turn. Where's my Super Katana?? :-)

Sorry, that was DL30 in the castle, not DL33.

Frustrated at losing Zantetsuken to a deity that seems to have given up being nice to me. About 10 consecutive bad or neutral level rewards, plus 3 WIS random raises in a row. If my stats still look good to you, well then, that is a benefit of playing a Chaos Warrior with Chardros or Hionhurn.
So to vent my frustration, I simply dove into the vault in search of Sting. A killer bee woke up, and I was also stupid enough to attack a sleeping Time Elemental, but nothing else of note. Found Sting in the second room I searched, so I high tailed it out of there. Now I think I will hang out a DL 32 of Angband for a while and gain some levels. The Cloning Pits are my next hurdle, and that is quite a long ways off.

I've never been one to shy away from frequent posts. But I just offed a sleeping Lousy only to find out that he was carrying Werewindle!! Sweet ... but I'll soon be complaining about the annoying Chaos brand :-)

Just completed the Cloning Pits. Now it is sheer stupidity to go in ridiculously early, like I did. CL 31 is just way too soon!! But the random monsters were tame, my stealth decent, and I had oodles of speed (5 staves and 9 potions for 49 available boosts). Nothing went wrong, so success was fairly easy. But still, patience is always better ;-)

Calris, Anarion and Boromir were among the take. Of the three, only Boromir is being used at the moment, as Werewindle is just plain better than Calris, despite my racial resistance to aggravation.

I may dip my toe in the Dragon's Lair. I'm a bit bored, and willing to take on more risks to pick things up. Of course, this means that death may soon take me ...

Well, I did dip my toe into the Dragon's Lair, and quickly thought better of it. Without Telepathy, the risk of insta-death is just way too high (I lost a Ringil wielding Priest this way once). So back to Angband to scum for Telepathy, prepared to wait as long as it takes. But it was the Black Market that ended up coming through for me!! At 180,000 gp, I had to sell off quite a bit of my stuff. I also passed on buying a Potion of CON as well ... You can never have too much dough!

OK, now I think I can gingerly explore the Dragon's Lair. Perhaps things will speed up a bit now?

18 minutes later in the Dragon's Lair and I already found a Crown of Telepathy *and* Thranduil. So much for patience ;-)

Still, having Telepathy in amulet form is nice. If Amber or Hammerhand comes along, then I don't have to worry about wearing it ...

Gosh, that Werewindle is one annoying weapon. Not so bad for hanging out in Angband, but nearly unbearable for skimming the top of the Dragon's Lair. Let's say you decide to take on the Great Ice Wyrm. You haste up, quaff a potion of resist cold, attack for round or two, and them vooommp. Teleported away. I'd say I only killed about 25% of the dragons (big ones, mind you) that I engaged. The rest just disappeared, and its not like I can just go in search of them. I mean, at DL60, I'm out of my league ;-)

So, to end the pain, I decided to do the Castle quest. Zarcuthra is mine at last! Giving up Sound, Shards and Disenchantment resistance, though.

Back to the Dragon Slaughter (with a newly acquired 20d6 dragon slicer, things should move along now).

I just got Jack's Cloak from a Great Ice Wyrm. Sweet. But it looks like wearing an aggravating weapon caps your stealth at 'Superb'. I can add 7 more points of stealth and I am still just 'Superb'. OK, I guess that is good enough!

Shuffled equipment and I still have gaping holes. Without Sound, Shards or Disenchantment resistance, I am staying put right here. I've been exceptionally unlucky with random resistances, as they have all gone to Nexus, Chaos or Fear. Also, Zarcuthra is supposed to get an extra resistance or ability, but did not. Oh well, I'm sure my luck will change shortly :-)

Lucky to be alive. I don't care who you are! If you Saving Throw is not atleast Amber, than do not, I repeat, do not kill an Amberite. Never! Never! Never!

I just killed Rinaldo, whimpiest of the whimpiest, and he puts a blood curse on me.

"Space warps around you" - So antisummoning corridors are *useless*

"The wall turns into mud" (x20) - ditto

"You feel like a statue" - Oh crap ... here we go again.

"The Solar hits you" (etc.) - Surely, I will die. Resistance? Phaw! I'm vulnerable to light!

But it must have been a 1 turn statue effect, because here I am, alive and kicking. Down to 100hp, but, hey, what can you do!

I repeat: Never, Never, Never, Never, Never kill an Amberite. Never!! Perhaps, I'll keep Muramasa in my back pocket after all ...

Scratch that:

The Solar attacked for 2 rounds, failed to cast a spell (thank god), cast a mana bolt, attacked for 2 rounds, and then cast Dispel Magic. That's 7 helpless moves from a formidable opponent! Now wonder the blood curse kills me so often ...

OK, breathe deep. Focus. You are still alive!

After the close call with the ridiculous insta-death curse, the Black Market was kind enough to stock some Genji gloves. Despite Thorin, I pushed forward to dual wield. For awhile I used Werewindle, but the Chaos brand is just completely intolerable. Unless you don't mind the inability to kill a single monster, than you are better off with something else. Me, I chose Calris since the aggravate is meaningless with Zarcuthra :-)

Let's build dual wielding skill!

Wow, I never realized that about Shadow Fairies before. But yeah, I tested it just now with SingedDream, and Lo and Behold, I drop from Amber[15] down to Superb when I swap Boromir or Hell Collar. Hm. That's not too happy, Superb stealth is actually rather puny.

And thanks for the comment about the rings!

Wacko, you are right about resistance holes ... While I was dual wielding (giving up Sound and Shards) I was stupid enough to take on a Great Wyrm of Law. It breathes sound. Ouch, that kind of hurt! It breathes shards. Down to 6 hp! Healing and teleport and a switch back to single wielding, using Thorin for Sound resistance and some nice Dragon gloves for Shards. And against dragons, I really do not notice that my damage has been slightly decreased, as I hit much more often, and with much higher quality now.

So far, I've found 3 5d5 long swords. Excalibur came second, and I'd like to use it, but I built this character around Zarcuthra, so the black blade is in it for the long haul. Only 1 more 5d5 long sword to go, though ;-)

Also, I found an interesting Falcon Sword of Slaying, 5d7 with sharpness. Sort of looks like a Diamond Edge to me! Can you imagine playing a Ninja and finding something like that?

Well, I killed 93 quality dragons at DL60 of the Dragon's Lair, netting some good equipment, and I plan to kill at least that many at the bottom. I've also upsized to Great Wyrms of Law, Chaos, Balance. Many unique dragon's are dead, but Tiamat, Mycen, Eibra and Narse still remain.

Despite my previous rant on Amberites, I decided to take a risk and kill Brand, hoping for his crossbow. Guess what. He curses, and turns me into a Statue!! That's two for two on the Statue effect. But, the curse did not summon a single monster, so I just sat there, frozen in time, but very safe.

OK, now that's just not fair, though. So, if Amberites aren't going to play fair, than neither am I. Lords of Amber, meet Muramasa!! I think my Katana has a taste for human blood ;-)

Just completed the Node of Chaos quest, so its time to shift into a more mage-like stance. I received Crimson in the quest, but, mysteriously, the supposed additional resistance is missing. So Crimson joins Zarcuthra and Thorin in the missing resistance category for my active equipment, and Celegorm as well. I know there is a way to force a good additional resistance, but I don't feel right about using it ... I'll need to check the code to see what the XTRA_POWER | XTRA_H_RES on Crimson actually means ... Oh wait, looks like Regeneration was my extra ability. OK, rant mode off ;-)

Mana Storm - 16% Fail Rate. 2 more levels and some mastery and this will become 8%, enough to do some real damage. And Breathe Logrus is 4% behind that, but currently costs 121 sp. Ouch! Perhaps I'll kill Gandalf (I'm already evil, no?) in hopes of his staff.

On 7.8.2005 19:46 blackreaver368@yahoo.com wrote:
Matthias, getting the statue effect means the RNG clearly does *not* like you. The fact that I survived means that it is just toying with me, setting me up for the big kill ;-)

I currently plan to avoid the TY_CURSE for a bit. *Destructing* Amberites is far safer than actually killing them!

OK, that was completely my fault. I was being a bit too stingy with the healing potions. Down to around 300hp and thought I would just go one more round ... Not! Oh, well, need to be more careful next time :-)

That Falcon sword of Slaying was pretty impressive. I've often wondered what the best possible ego weapon would be. No double egos on weapons, right?

A Falcon sword of sharpness could get up to +5 attacks and would be vorpal, or maybe a blade of chaos of slaying with 12d5 damage, poison brand, and vorpal.

Any other suggestions?
