Looks like I guessed right on the smeagol drop. The player ghost was supposed to drop excellent but the boots are only good hmmm.

The staff of slow monsters seems to damage them quite a bit, a bug I guess, and I'll happily abuse it o_0

Autoscum was off this game but I think I'll try the next one with autoscum on
