Finally got a bard up and running....
This is only Bard no 8 or so (I've lost exact count) that I've rolled up as a Beastman with the Eat Magic mutation.....
This guy has only got one blow still but he got the Steel Skin and Tentacle mutations early which allowed him to still melee 'stunned' opponents without copping too much grief.
Completed random quests at Ang 6 and 12 but neither of the uniques dropped anything great apart from a couple of level 3 spellbooks which were used for cash.
Scummed towns to get Ring of Free Action and also picked up cap of seeing to cover Blindness and more importantly see invisible.
He is fun but I'm keeping my fingers crossed he gets a second blow sometime soon. If it wasn't for the aforementioned Steel Skin and Tentacle mutations he probably would've gone the way of his predecessors.
Elliot - I know you love bards - Any tips from here?
I know I need to pick up some light armor of Res or preferably Elvenkind....
I think I may be able to do Orc Camp Quest if I learn 'Hiding Tune' at the next level up and use that to get to the convenient nook in the Mid East part of the map (near the Sapper) which would allow me to take them on one on one - I would however also prefer to have another blow per round to make sure ( Believe it or not the Broad Sword of Slay Orc is about the second best weapon I've seen but it should help for the Quest anyway)....
We'll see what happens.
Hopefully this guy will not die str8 after posting like my other puny bards.

Until you can get your DEX up enough for 2 or 3 blows/round, Wrecking Note is your friend, as much for the stunning as the damage. The absolute key is to get up to level 27 or so at which point you get Doomcall and the world becomes your oyster.
In the meantime, Soulshriek is a tricky one. Its dangerous to use when undead/demons are around, and doesn't do a ton of damage. Its really better for quickly mopping up breeders or other weak monsters, or as a LoS confusion attack against orcs, rather than as a true killing attack by itself.
That having been said, Soulshriek is handy for exp. Having it running in a room full of monsters, and you get a little exp from everything damaged, and that can add up. Practicing it and Doomcall up to high skill levels is critical, because it really boosts how long you can play it for.

Character finally found a a decentish weapon at Chlvl 26 - the Whip Bolshoi adds +4 to Charisma and Dex and is a 2d6 weapon. He still didn't get a second blow however until a bit later when he finally scored a boost to Str on levelling up to Chlvl 27 or 28......
His melee sux as does his kit at the moment but he hasn't gone too deep so I can't complain too much.
2 blows for 38 damage at chlvl 30 is pathetic but he did stumble across some granite walls in the Dragon's Lair on level 30 and he used that to level up to 29. During this time he learnt Doomcall and that proved alot more efficient in cleaning most of them up before rinsing and repeating. Nice spell.
Unfortunately whilst levelling he gained the mutation 'You feel you are getting better' or some such rubbish which then removed his steel skin mutation - Could've been worse though - at least he didn't lose eat magic.
Also while he was levelling up on the Granite Walls in the Dragon's Lair a Nexus Vortex popped up round the corner and promptly made him sink through the floor..... Aargh....
I still have not attempted the mid level quests as his melee is so pathetic but I might start thinking about it soon once Doomcall fail rate comes down some more (currently 29%). If I could get the swap position mutation that would be ideal with that spell.
Eat Magic fail rate currently at 48% so can't rely on that in the heat of battle either. I've had 3 rods destroyed during the process too - anyone know how often that happens?
Trying hard not too kill this guy as I can see his usefullness / versatility / power will go up exponentially in the next few levels. Hopefully will see the 3rd spellbook soon. Might dive a bit in the Dragon's Lair to get some decentish drops.
Wish me luck.
On 16.2.2006 06:32 ralonso@au1.ibm.com wrote: Hmmm just noticed that Eat Magic is actually at 39% fail at the moment so it's a bit better than I thought.
On 16.2.2006 15:16 Elliott946@aol.com wrote: Dunno how often blowing up rods happens, but I think it happens a set % of the time (5%, perhaps), so the lower your success rate, the less value you get out of the rods below they blow up.
Losing Steelskin is pretty painful. It might just be my favorite mutation in the game. The two mutation in Entro that I dread the most are "strangely normal" and "Fall into other realities". Strangely normal because of the way it eats up your other mutations, and Other Realities will periodically re-set the level, and if Preserve is Off, you lose any artifacts that were on the level.
I know the fail rate is a bit high on Doomcall still, and you can only sustain it for 4 or 5 rounds, but it should really be your primary weapon right now. If your skill in it isn't up to Expert yet, you should really head into the Dragon Cave (or maybe level 31) and practice until it is. Ideally you'd get it up to Master, but that can take longer than I have the patience for.
IMO, your current mission in life should be orc and troll pit clearing. Sneak up behind it, punch a hole in the wall, step in so you can see 70%+ of the monsters inside, and fire off Doomcall. 5 rounds of it should be ~300 damage, enough to kill any non-unique at your current depth. Orcs aren't worth much exp to you, but if you kill them 80 at a time they aren't bad. Plus, it gives you lots of loot to sort through and Bards have the best item ID in the game.
I'd start thinking about doing the early Arena monsters. The early potions and rod they drop are handy. Once you get the rod of stone to mud, the Mimic Quest should be doable. Start Doomcall running in the start area, poke a hole in the wall, or open a door, where only one set of monsters can see you, and Doomcall should wipe them out in like 2 rounds. Rinse, repeat, and then clean up the lurkers.
On 17.2.2006 00:52 ralonso@au1.ibm.com wrote: Chlvl 32 - No dump
Aargh - the stupidity award goes to me.....
Elliot - yes I've been trying to use Doomcall as much as possible.
I did the Mimics Quest (without the Rod) I just teleported and then cast Doomcall - Rest, then repeat... Got a little bit hairy cleaning up one lot of mimics when I failed 3 times in a row to fire off doomcall and they summoned a bunch of Blink Dogs - it all worked out in the end though thanks to a potion of *Healing* which I took with me. No notable drops which was a shame because it often provides something nice.
Anyway - moved on to the Tengu quest and thats where my problems started. The Quest was a cinch and I found Calris there which I thought was fantastic.
I immediately solde 'Bolshoi' + two ego swords from the Tengu Quest so I could *Remove Curse* on Calris and enchant it up so I could hit stuff. This gave me an extra 30hps and 2 blows for 113 damage which was a huge upgrade.
I decided I wanted to do Old Man Willow Quest followed by Dark Elven Lord Quest. First one - no problem. Elven Lord Quest I prepared by quaffing a potion of speed + heroism + Holy Chant and casting stealth spell so I could sneak in to Dweller room and then switch to Doomcall whilst in their midst.... Anyone notice the fatal flaw in that strategy????? I'd been playing up to this point having forgotten that Calris aggravates - lol.... I walked in their and couldn't work out why the Golems and Giants were trying to mug me - No problem I thought as I but through them easily - I opened the door though and all the Dwellers were awake and that's when I realised...... A couple of them summoned and I was surrounded by lots of stuff (including Red Helm) - down to half hit points when 2 teleports finally took me next to the exit....
With my previous weapon I would've completed it easily (I think).
Next I got the Scroll of Acquirement from the Arena and went to the Dark Cave to cash it in....First two times I had to go in and out str8 away due to the nasties in there. 3rd attempt looked ok and I read the scroll (Full Plate Armour) but before I could pick it up something breathed disintigration and it went *POOF*.
2 for 2...
Finally I recalled back down to Angband 31 and got a 'Special' level feeling and started to rub my hands with glee....
I cast Clairaudience and found that I was next to a Large Chequerboard vault with about 8 or 9 uniques in it as well as some serious other nasites. (See screenshot).... I thought oh oh - Most of these I can't take.... Took out first 6 critters and then abandoned level... Got no artifacts just a couple of crappy ego items which I sold....
Checked Artifacts seen and I missed 13 Artifacts on that level - lol - Only 13 could've been worse :-) (see 2nd screenshot)...
The only one that I think I may've used longterm would've been Faramir but can't do anything about it now....
I thought about suiciding the character and then decided to stick it out...
