A decent mix of luck so far. I was creation-scumming for Eat-Magic mutation (as always), but got Arioch as a Chaos Patron, and I decided that was good enough. Rewards so far included 3 Polymorphs, 2 items (one good one excellent), 2 Augmentations, 1 Full Heal, and 1 Wrath. The rest were Ignores or Mass Genos.
Smeagol and Brodda both dropped Pattern Weapons on me, so I'm up to a decent monetary start this time around, at least (last couple tries picked up Short Stubs mutation early, and turned me into an Ent, respectively).

?oAcq produced Celegorm, which is nice. Picked up a couple nice stat mutations while playing with Polymorph (and lost a number of stat points because of it). No RoDamage sighted yet though, which is unhappy. 6 blows and only barely breaking 100 damage..
On 22.1.2006 19:27 Elliott946@aol.com wrote: I've come to the conclusion that the single best mutation for a non-broadbased spell caster, arguably even better than Chaos Patron, is Harden to the Elements. Yeah, the +3 speed from extra legs is nice, telepathy is hugely valuable, +25 AC from Steelskin can be a life saver, and the healing from Berserk can give you great staying power, to say nothing of value of the various stat bonus ones or White Aura, but none of them compare with being able to give yourself doubled resists. That one makes all sorts of battles that seem suicidal actually quite managable.
On 23.1.2006 01:47 dzhang@its.caltech.edu wrote: !!
Whoa!! I did not know that Berserk gives healing! Geez, if I had known that, I would have kept that for Chaos-Warriors and other classes without intrinsic healing.
Thanks for letting me know!
As for the others, Steelskin appears too rarely for me to notice its effects (usually by the time I get my first !oPolymorph, I'm already at 100+ AC).
One other really good mutation you didn't list and I haven't picked up yet is Mass Impotence (Sterilize), and it's especially important for Sexy characters. Large vaults become utterly impossible if Unmakers wake up and breed too much, and levels with Greater Wall Monsters become a huge pain.
One other mutation that I tend to like is Wraithform. Even though it activates randomly, it's still enough that you may be able to kill some monsters that you otherwise wouldn't be able to (and I personally don't have anything against waiting some 3k turns on a level for it to activate.
My personal favorite is still Eat Magic though, given my playing style.
On 23.1.2006 06:33 dzhang@its.caltech.edu wrote: [Dlvl 25] [Clvl 27] 3:15
Grendel dropped a couple of nice items (Thranduil, Thakkeloth), and I found a RoChaosResistance randomly pretty early, so most resists are covered.
HP and damage output are pitiful though.
On 23.1.2006 14:32 dzhang@its.caltech.edu wrote: Hm... Unfortunately, Bard Superstealth does not seem to be the same as Ninja Superstealth. Whereas Ninja superstealth seems to work even with aggravation as long as there is darkness, Bard Superstealth just boots normal stealth up to Legendary[32], which is still useless with Aggravation.
On 23.1.2006 15:01 Elliott946@aol.com wrote: Yeah, I suspected that might be the case with Bard Stealth, which is why I've run run Sexy Bards in Nightmare mode where it doesn't matter.
6 blows/round and 111 damage? That's just sad.
As for mutations, I've rarely gotten Sterlize, and have pretty much never used it. Unmakers are indeed a pain, but they only appear late by which time I don't care as much. Plus, Bards pretty much live to slaughter huge masses of monsters. Do you have Doomcall yet? Once you get the failrate and SP cost down to a manageable level, its staggeringly useful. IMO, its 3rd on the Most Valuable Fairly Low Level spell in the game after Life's basic Healing and Sorcery's Haste.
Berserk does indeed give a little healing ~30 hp/shot, along with, of course, making you berserk. As a result, the spell Berserk is fine for making you Berserk, but otherwise not very useful. However, if you get the special ability Berserk, then you can do it repeatedly. Its either 5 or 9 SP per shot (I forget which), which is pretty good for 30 HP. Doesn't compare with a Life caster, but for a class without intrinsic healing (say, a Samurai) it can helpful and for a class without healing AND with a way of restoring SP (Concentration or Eat Magic, perhaps) you get a huge boost to your staying power.
On 23.1.2006 15:06 Elliott946@aol.com wrote: Re: Steelskin. While Steelskin is a huge boost at low levels (fighting Nar while AC 110 is good fun), its real value is late in the game. The difference between fighting the Serpent at AC 130 and AC 155 is pretty significant and if you aren't a class with access to Stone Skin or the like, Steelskin is a handy way to make sure you get past the AC 150 cutoff.
On 24.1.2006 10:58 dzhang@its.caltech.edu wrote: Actually, Berserk is even better than that... you don't need a good way of restore SP to use it, in fact, because it's an ability, which just taps HP if you're out of SP. So, it works fine for Warriors and other non-SP characters too.

Man, I have new respect for Elliot for sticking it through so many times with Beastman. After the first iteration of Jigglypuff died,
Try #2: Picked up wraithform, and Dlvl 6 quest gave an awesome weapon that was like (+15, +20) [+18]. Also picked up Wraithform mutation... but then I pick up "Masked with Illusion" at some mid-20's level.. net effect of -8 CHA. Head to Zul, try to remove, but lose Eat Magic first. Eh.. suicide.
Try #3: Picked up He-man and Limber Body, along with some minor ones. Items were mediocre, but I was getting 3 blows, and I had bought a RoDamage(+14) from BM, so things were OK. Then I pick up "Mutated but recovering." Suicide (Really don't want to lose Eat Magic on like clvl 48).
Try #4: Farmer Maggot drops a Shield of Resistance (awesome! Those are really rare, at least for me... I usually find Celegorm before one of those). Pick up a few neutral ones... and then Wasting Disease. Oy... another self-requested tombstone.
Currently is Try #5. Dlvl 6 quest for Brodda dropped Gloves of Power, and Lion heart dropped a Dagger of *Slay Evil* (which doesn't actually have Kill Evil flag, just the normal Slay Evil, plus ESP Evil (that's pretty good though)).
Mutations so far: Eat Magic (scummed at start), Telekinetic, Emit Hard Radiation, Power Throwing, Mind Randomly Expands, Moronic (I checked.. this was a level-up gift, not an eldrich horror effect)
On 3.3.2006 18:36 Elliott946@aol.com wrote: Heh. That's why I don't post characters as often as some. Lots of character suiciding going on behind the scenes.
That's pretty bad luck getting 4 killers in a row like that. Is wasting disease really worth suiciding over? I don't think I've ever had a character pick it up late enough to really play with it. Does it permanently knock down your stats occasionally?
On 3.3.2006 19:47 dzhang@its.caltech.edu wrote: Hm... maybe I should have stuck with Wasting Disease.. the Zangband spoiler site says you have a 1/9 probability of permanently losing a point of stat per 3000 game turns, but the key point is that it doesn't happen if the stat is sustained, so it might not be a big deal in the end-game.
But I was getting in a frustrated repetition suicide mode, and I didn't pick up anything particuarly tempting me not to suicide (i.e. a Ring of Speed or something)
On 3.3.2006 19:53 dzhang@its.caltech.edu wrote: [Dlvl 21] [Clvl 25] 2:15
The 25 quests are complete, along with Vault. Picked up Tetsuga-of-Flame in Mimic Quest, which is really great for increasing damage output, and a recent RoDamage(+15) in the Black Market means I'm up to 220 damage per round with Sting... Not bad for a Bard! Honestly, though, I think Tetsuga-of-Flame has been too unbalanced with the change from (-5, +10) to (+5, +10), considering it also gives a heft [+20] AC. Removing the -1 Speed is enough to balance it into usefulness..
Nothing new mutation-wise. ?oAcq at Dark Cave gave a Long Bow of Accuracy (+21, +19), so that's replaced Wrecking Note as my main ranged attack (also grants the benefit of letting my songs continue.. usually using Flow of Life).
I would like to pick up Polymorph Self at some point... I'd like to trade for a higher CHA race and get the +SP bonus. That, and I don't need two sources of innate RSound.
On 3.3.2006 19:58 dzhang@its.caltech.edu wrote: Ooh.. forgot to mention. Sting's random power was RPoison!! Yay!
On 3.3.2006 20:16 dzhang@its.caltech.edu wrote: Killed Gachapin... well, I wouldn't say "easily," but not too difficult, because I was carrying some 20+ arrows of Shocking, which did on the order of 200 damage per shot against the reptile. This strategy wouldn't have worked against Alberich.. ^^
On 3.3.2006 21:01 dzhang@its.caltech.edu wrote: [Dlvl 27] [Clvl 31] 3:15
Grabbed my standard 5 Clvls off Killing Fields. Didn't nearly kill all of the Warriors of the Dawn available though... was running short on Food, ?oRecharging, and also ?oTeleport. Mutations have been quiet lately for some reason or other.
On 3.3.2006 21:06 Elliott946@aol.com wrote: In the early days of playing Beastmen, I used to really look forward to using Polymorph self. Now, not so much.
Part of the problem is that I want to wait until level 22 or so, just to make sure that if I get Half-Titan I'm not knocked down to level 17 and unable to do it again. By level 22, especially if I've got a Chaos Patron who hands out a lot of stat points or augmentations, there's a strong chance I'll have a stat or two that's 18/70 or over, and thus in danger of having it shifted to a stat with an 18/70 max and losing some points (which are very dear in Entroband).
Plus, I'll probably have a stat or two (usual CHR and WIS, it seems) that I haven't put a point into, I've made no extra effort to buy the potion from the BM, and the RNG has been unkind to it, so its sitting, at like 13 or something. If that stat gets swapped to CON, my Polymorph self fail rate jumps to like 99%. Sure, it can still be done, but, damn, it becomes really tedious. If I wait until all stats are high enough, then I probably have a couple stats 18/100 or higher, and I'm pretty much guaranteed to lose stat points by polymorphing.
Also, if the character had a really bad life rating AND badly set-up stat maximums, he probably would have died or been suicided at some point, and I'll hesistate before giving them up.
Finally, while Beastmen have some minuses, I've come to appreciate them as a race. Low exp penalty, great HP, and really handy innate resists. Sure, the stats aren't great overall, but that +2 CON is huge in the end game. The racial skill bonuses (mostly penalties, really) bug me, especially stealth, but I've come to appreciate the all-around package much more.
I'll grant that Alberich is the sturdier of the two, but overall I still say Gachapin is MUCH more dangerous. His poison breath still does 100 damage/shot with rPoison.
