Can't resist an early post. Took forever to get the first 2 random stat rolls to go my way (Probability = 4/6 * 4/6 = 4/9 but probably took 20 characters ...) But once they did, I round the corner in the Thieves quest and pick up this 6d8 sabre. Its vorpal! And I think it might be poison branded to boot since I could have sold it for over 8,000gp. Nice ...

Super Sabre is only vorpal, no poison brand. Still 1.22 * 6d8 gives about a 6d10 weapon. Not bad. Moreover, sabres are suitable for riding. This little sabre has the dice of a heavy lance (4d8 normally but 6d8 while riding) without the criticals, however.

Also, riding has been boosted in Heng 1.70, so I start at +1 speed. I think riding gets an extra +5 speed overall vs. Heng 1.6.2. Nice.

And an early staff of haste monsters. Vroom! Vroom! Go, Hydra!

Now I failed DL6 quest by reading an un-identified scroll of word of recall, and I already messed up the unique quest. Presumably fire scorched my corpse? But with this uber sabre, can I really start over? No, way!

Chugging along. DL24 quest brough the Ultimate Dungeon Cleaner, who dropped about 10,000gp worth of useless stuff.

Riding is now skilled, and I am +2 speed base. Of course I am always hasted at +12 speed. Only a rider could have such awesome early speed! Waiting on CL29 when I get the Haste Monster spell.

Need some armour of resistance. I've seen 3 or 4 in the towns that I could not afford, so patience and more gold should do the trick.

Working that %$! bat for a law drake ... but so far I've only managed 2 balance drakes and 3 chaos drakes, along with about 4 experience levels :)

Its even better than the Dragon's Lair! Worst summon so far was an Ancient Black Dragon, which I handled easily at +16 speed.

Nice name for the hydra. Why hold out for the law drake? I would have thought balance would be better.

On 17.12.2005 17:10 chriskousky@hotmail.com wrote:
Well, for any drake to advance requires something like 150,000xp, which is just too much. Plus drakes are generally crappy mounts, its the early GWoLaw mount that would really excel. But Law Drakes are good and the bat is evil, which is probably why I am not getting any.

The trick is to get a Law Drake and then let your steed farm Granite Walls. A mount with Chaos breath will make this impossible, as the walls will get polymorphed all the time. And unlike players, monster pets can kill as many critters as they like and still gain xp. I've never actually done this trick, but there is a Beastmaster on the Hengband ladder where this was done.

(CL32:DL32)
Still working the bat, but about to end it. Worked from maybe CL26 or 27 (can't remember) at the start. Also gained Colluin (Yes!) and Sumo's Loincloth, as well as potions of Int, Wis and Chr.

I'm good enough now to go to the Dragon's Lair and look for a Law Drake.

On 17.12.2005 19:30 chriskousky@hotmail.com wrote:
Here's a trick I just learned by accident ... Place your mount in capture ball to reset its xp to 0. Why would you want to do this? Well some dragons evolve into other dragons that you cannot ride without immunities. An AMHD will evolve into a GWoMC, for example.

Finally found a Law Drake, and +1 base speed no less. OK, 150,000xp and I will have a super mount :)

Eorlingas is supposed to be my Old Castle reward but I picked it up in the Dragon's Lair. This bow came from the Black Market for a mere 140,000gp.

Another tame take from an what ended up being a very easy quest. Most monsters just can't handle the Sound and Shards breaths of my Great Wyrm of Law!

I'd be upset about the take, except for that Heavy Lance Holy Avenger. Too bad I am nowhere near strong enough to use it though ...

Back to the Dragon's Lair despite the betrayal vs. my last character (generating a GCV on DL45 is just evil).

And stats are becoming respectable. I can even wield Eorlingas. Perhaps, now that I just found Hammerhand, I can give the Heavy Lance a go? Not sure if 18/177 Str will be enough.

Now here is something interesting. I've always maintained that Hengband was wonderfully balanced. But for riding classes, as soon as you obtained your first Greater Summoning Dragon steed, you were set for life, as you could let your steed summon, and then scum the summons for a better speed mount. No more. Summons of your pets can not be captured, and while you can ride them, if you ever capture the original 'master' summoner, they vanish! I guess that is why the riding speed was tweaked after all.

Probably a good change, but very upsetting for me, since I am now stuck on my +8 speed GWoLaw until I can actually manage to capture another one ... not any time soon!

On 18.12.2005 03:05 dzhang@its.caltech.edu wrote:
What if you ride a summon in dungeon while the master summoner is around, but then recall? Do you automatically lose your mount?

On 18.12.2005 03:27 chriskousky@hotmail.com wrote:
Not sure, and I don't think I want to try it :)

Here is what happened. Shardy summoned another Great Wyrm of Law. I probed it, and it was +8 speed, just like Shardy, so I was not too excited. I figured I would capture it and take it down to the next level, which was a quest level (BTW, I failed DL50 due to lack of Nexus resistance and the fact Daolith breathed nexus on his first move which teleported me thru the ceiling ... annoying). Capturing failed with the message 'The Great Wyrm of Law is Unaffected'. So OK, I figure, what happens if I ride the summon and capture Shardy? Well, as soon as I capture Shardy, the summoned Great Wyrm of Law disappears and I am left standing on my own 2 feet! I'm guessing recall would cause you to lose your steed ...

(CL37:DL53)
Aaahh! Tasty stat potions. Multiple Str, Con and Dex. Plus an Augmentations. Mmmmmm. Mmmmmm. Good!

Now some riding spoilers:

Lances are "Made for use while riding". What this means is a bonus to hit, as well as an extra 2d on the damage dice. So my heavy lance 4d8 is actually 6d8 (though not displayed as such) and with slays, has 12d8 vs. evil and 18d8 vs undead or demons. Not a bad weapon! But 4 attacks is the max ...

On 18.12.2005 06:46 dzhang@its.caltech.edu wrote:
Whoa... no kidding? Extra 2D? As in an extra 2D77 in the case of the Stick? (It has the Riding flag)

Posing a bit here ... In general, using 2 hands to weild your weapon is not recommended, since I think it means you get dismounted more frequently. But it means an extra attack and an extra +25 to hit. I was having accuracy problems so I swapped in Faramir despite the loss of +6 Chr.

On 18.12.2005 17:16 wacko_chipmunk@hotmail.com wrote:
As for you problems with that GWoL disappearing, I think it has to do with the fact that it was summoned by a pet. I have had instances where I have a pet who summons alot, but when I dismiss it, all of its summons disappear as well. I guess putting a monster in a capture ball causes its summons to disappear as well. I guess its just a feature to try to prevent summon scumming and raising huge armies of summoned monsters to do all the work for you.

Thanks, Wacko. I agree the game is a bit more balanced now. Though I was looking forward to Shardy summoning a better mount for me!

And I just noticed I don't have free action in this dump! Well, back to Sumo Wrestler's Loincloth I go ...

Last post for the week ... Lucky finds of Five Aces and Numenor. I'm actually surprised by my interest in Numenor, but +3 Chr really helps out with my spells (Dimension Door down to 11% fail) and I was missing Sound and Shards resistance to this point. Sumo's is still my source of Free Action, so I will need to remember not to swap it out. But this has to be the weirdest equipment set I've ever used to cover all resistances. AC is a bit too low, but this is less important when mounted ...

Now, my steed might not be able to summon me a better mount, but I certainly can. I just need to wait till CL47 for Trump Ancient Dragon, and I should be able to score what I need.

Nothing like taking a 40lb 18d8 demon slayer to R'lyeh. Gothmog went down fast!

Just picked up a quite awesome mount, +26 speed! That's enough for the end game, and combined with my 670hp heal monster spell, I should be able to keep it alive. Not much motivation to summon a dragon at the moment :)

Now my equipment sucks at the moment. Still waiting on a better attacks ring, combined with Reinforce muscle or perhaps even Tulkas. The rest of my equipment is immobile as I need to keep my stats up to wield the lance ...

There's CL50, at long last. Not long after switching to Excalibur did I find Amber, and right back to a heavy lance I went, though a self made trump lance was used this time to cover missing free action and nexus resistance. I sort of got used to the 18d8 and criticals for 36d8 and 54d8 with the holy avenger lance, but this will get the job done, and certainly is much more deadly than the pitiful Excalibur :)

93 uniques to go? Well, maybe a couple more, but the 3 lazy guardians are still a bit beyond my reach. Perhaps Morgoth could be handled with some *Healing*, but lets be careful. This is only my second lazy character ever and the first time the Unicorn got me ;-)

Drew the Unicorn as my DL88 quest monster ... And I went for it. All out. We're talking 20 !oHealing and 10!*Healing* and 10!oResistance and 5!oRestoreMana. Came up short, though I did manage 7 stars off the horned beast. The problem? My Lord of Change was just not sturdy enough. In the end, I was chucking !o*Healing* off the wall to heal my mount ... probably needed 15!oRestore Mana to get it done. But for me, the Unicorn is probably much harder than the Serpent, so I think I can win. I just want to claim a lazy artifact once in my life! You know, something to brag about ;-)

Switched to the recently maligned Excalibur ... Narya and Cambeleg make it competitive.

The Clothes of the Idler!

Wahooo! I really wanted the stick, but I think the Yumi would have been the worst of the 3 (+7 speed, +7Int, +7Wis are all meaninless to me ...).

Now, I guess the Unicorn needs to go next, but she already proved beyond me. I think if I was riding a great wyrm of power that things might be different ...

Elliott, I am actually not sure how that works. By and large, pet evolution is not worth it. Exceptions are Hydras and the Law Drake. I would guess XP is as the monster's DL.

Now, I am prepping to gain a GWoPower mount. You will notice I have the 3 required immunities (this is actually why I chose lazy to begin with as the 3 required immunities are "guaranteed"). Just need to find and "tame" one :)

I think then the Unicorn may prove more agreeable.

Holy tough battles, Batman!

I sold out on the Unicorn, treating her as I would the Serpent. Brought every thing I owned. And she went summoning nuts. Probably 100+ greater dragons still lurking, but I made it back to my stash of *destruction* and should be able to clean up. There is a pack of Great Wyrms of Power ... perhaps I can find a faster one?

The take: The Yumi or Irresponsibility. Well, I guess the stick is next ;-)

I must say I had tunnel vision when hunting the Unicorn. I even ignored a couple special levels. She *had* to die! But checking my artifact list I see that I too have missed Feanor.

LOL! Feanor is actually useless to a riding class! I would have tossed it anyway ...

Found a +23 speed GWoPower. Also, I notice that with the Yumi I am Legendary[42] with bows and that (+10, +10) Seeker Arrows hit for (221/568). Hmmm ... I should start collecting those :)

And I must add that you truly haven't lived until you have sat on top of a Great Wyrm of Power. Holy Carp! That thing is indestructable and breathes like mad. Nothing like fighting Locke and having your wyrm breathe him down for you. Simply, totally and utterly amazing! Well worth the wait ...

And while I had to heal a lot while fighting the Unicorn, my steed never lost a single star. Incredible!

Now, I imagine it will take some time for the ring to show up. I actually saw it much much earlier in R'lyeh but I was no where near ready for it at the time. I am hoping for a checkerboard vault as that seems to be the best setup. Plus, I can summon and my mount can summon, so hopefully we can overwhelm the shiny one.

I must have that stick!

I usually play unmounted til at least CL20, when I will go to the wilderness and tame/capture a 4 headed hydra. Gain a few levels and some riding skill (at first, you will be thrown off your mount quite a bit) and then trade your mount in for one with a few more heads (5 or 7 if you can manage). Once I get a 7 headed hydra, I let it evolve up to 11 heads, when it is generally tougher than I am. Next stop is an Ancient Multi Hued Dragon, or if you like, you can do the Law Drake Granite Wall trick and get a Great Wyrm of Law. Nothing will kill that steed ...
