Another attempt at a mage. Granted, his namesake was much more martial than a gnome mage would suggest, but Andrea Doria somehow sounds to me like a gnome. Andrea has already had a couple close calls-- I seem to have trouble with mages in general.

A couple more close scrapes, Andrea has already recharged the staff of teleport a couple of times. He's got the routine early-level stuff out of he way, but no ?oTeleport of TL have appeared in the black market. The market has offered up !oHealing and Restore Mana, which is nice. Gear is still wretched, going to dive to stat gain and try to be more paranoid.

Andrea has found some good stuff, including Thengel and Celegrom. He's now at stat-gain territory, and has found a !oDex. Things are getting a little easier, but there are plenty of monsters that are just too dangerous for him to go near. Once hp>200, I'll drop him down further to find a o=PR.

Things to be thankful for:
Superb levels: Level 36 turned out to be quite memorable, with no monster pits either!
!oINT: So many started appearing, it looked like there was a keg somewhere on level 36
!oAugmentation: Very nice, getting one near the beginnning of stat gain
bows of extra shot: quite excellent
Weapons of westernesse: yummy, pass the stuffing
-oTeleport Away: Allows for easy de-licing of vaults

After only two dives at stat gain territory (including one in which he just arrives there), I feel that he has gained most of the benefits of stat-gain potions already. Anyway, Andrea is going to keep plugging away, next going to go find a =oPR.

Oops, looking back at my last comment, saying that Andrea has gained most of the benefit of stat-gain is overstating things a bit. More accurate would be nearly half.

The three main stats I care about are all in good shape thanks to fortunate potion drops. Equipment hasn't changed much, so progress is steady. Once hp>350, I think Andrea will drop down to 2500' to find Raal's, keeping resist poison on all the time.

Andrea found the =oPR and got hp over the 350 mark, which allowed him to take the breaths of dragons like Great Crystal, Death, and Ethereal. So, down to 2500' he goes. On the way, he found a raft of armor choices: Rohirrim, Ardevi, dwarven +2, and robe of permanence (nether). For now, he is going with Rohirrim, which allows him to swap out Thengel for a helm of telepathy.

Also, on a pleasurable note, INT has been maxed, and CON and STR are doing really well.

Current Priorities: any source of RBlind, Raal's, fat ring of o=CON or other CON sources, zappy wands/staves.

The greater vault was... bracing. A couple of Draco***, about 4 Greater elemental wyrms, Fundin Bluecloak, Medusa, Harowen, Saruman, etc. Andrea teleported away the big hitters, but did make time to kill a couple of the wyrms, Harowen, and Medusa. The loot was pretty good, although my kit hasn't changed much-- mainly just Isildur in for Rohirim. Also found Tenser's. Not sure whether Andrea should carry it down into the dungeon or whether to just keep it at home. Anyway, things are going pretty well for Andrea, a little hesitant to dive with Dracolich's one-shot kill threat.

Evidentally, dragons are very observant of holiday gift giving, as they have been showering Andrea with gifts. Itangast was kind enough to give yhe amulet of cammalas, and Scatha was not to be outdone with cloak of the magi with telepathy. However, it was an anonymous Great Crystal Drake that was the most generous, donating Caspanion to Andrea!

Anyway, diving to speed levels seems to be the thing to do.

Saruman was very thoughtful, and dropped Erebor. I suspect that Andrea will be using it for a long time... in fact, I could have used it to tunnel through all that snow this evening... Also, I was actually happy to get Barahir, as once Andrea gets his next !oCON, he would be 1 point away from max HP and 0% fail rate, so Barahir can replace both stat rings. In between episodes of The Amazing Adventures of Upchuck Baby,I've beeb able to get a little playing done. Andrea found some speed rings starting at around level 70, but he mostly kept diving, stopping for dragons, elemental wyrms, and uniques for which he can abuse LOS. With Kelek's, he is pretty much banishing anything that is at all inconvenient to fight.

Things were going really fast, and Ithought he would confront Sauron before he reached level 45. That changed at a relatively nondescipt level with a vault nearby, but a relatively wimpy level feeling.

If level feeling included unique monsters, this one would be superb; it seems that UniqueCon is taking place here. Killed so far:
Huan,Mouth,Maeglin,Atlas,Azriel,Witch-King
Still around the level:
Cantoras,Longorthin,Gothmog, Lernean Hydra, and Carcharoth.

The remaining uniques are separated, so Andrea plans to hunt them down.

Andrea Doria went with this kit to defeat Morgoth (Umbar and the Necklace of the Dwarves were picked up later, both would have been useful...)

Andrea recalled to Level 99, where Vecna and Khamul awaited him. After dispatching those two (costing one Restore Mana potion), he descended to Level 100 to confront Morgoth.

The battle wasn't very difficult, even with my concerns about lacking rBlind and rSound (in order to get two speed rings, needed this kit to get rPoison and to max out INT and CON. I figured I would see how this would do.)

Mainly Andrea used the wands of Annihilation when he got a clear shot to conserve mana, and mana storms when monsters (usually summons) were in the way. When the wands were depleted, he used Chaos Strike (should have used Mana Storm, made a mistake in math and thought, with the fail rates, that Chaos Strike did more damage/cast). Morgoth only mana stormed about four/five times, usually teleported him away and chugged a couple heal potions. In fact, only used one *Healing* potion, 7 Restore Mana potions, and 2 scrolls of Mass Banishment which I used when I was out of mana.

When Morgoth summoned, usually just banished the big breathers and nether ball casters, though sometimes Mass banished. When Morgoth summoned Glaurung, Dwaw, and Qlzlzuup, Andrea teleported away from the area, and waited for Morgoth to come to him.

All in all, a victorious battle of attrition. Like I said, I could have used the two non-predetermined artifacts that Morgoth dropped, but the battle wasn't really that difficult anyway-- mages are still really easy in the endgame (though I must admit that GoI was munchkin fun).

As reference, before morgoth, I was using Vilya, Isildur, and Thrandruil (I probably would have used Dor-Lomin, but I only got that by defeating Sauron, and would have to consider whether I would give up rBlind for Dor-Lomin).
