Yes, I intend to max all those skills. I think I will manage to do so without paying extra due to the raises in minimal skill cost. We'll see...

I hacked up the limit for rerolling, but otherwise the character is legit.

Just started the quest for 20 paladins. No close calls as of yet. I'll keep you informed...

I've just finished the quest for 20 novice paladins.
They come in groups and I tried to kill them in melee
to get some practice, so there were two tense moments,
when I was nearly dead, all mana was spent on failed
attempt to turn into a bat and Phase Door landed me repeatedly
in LOS of the cursing bastards. Anyway, due to the numerous skills
this game is mostly about "role-playing" a Jack of All Trades,
by practising many skills, so even if that is risky, everything's OK.

The reward was a Potion of Wisdom. Unfortunately, I got no EXP
for drinking that potions and I will never get. :( But I got
a Crystal Bottle after downing the potion! :>

The next quest is for gold coins. I really like the sound of that.
I've never seen gold coins and I hope they are friendly. :) We'll see...

I'm now power 19 and at dungeon level 5 --- quests fix quite a slow game pace.
I played as fast as I could, no stair-scumming,
no exploring if stairs down found, etc, but I'm shamefully too powerful
for my depth and this will probably stay so for a long time.
Perhaps, a part of the problem is, I got from the quest at level 3
up by stairs to the surface and then down by stairs to quest at level 5.

I got:
This place feels terribly dangerous!

Big round vault with lava circle inside, lots of essences and an evading Air spirit, Wormy, green baby dragon, pink scorpion. I left most boulders in another part of the dungeon, so I had to flee the vault and then I stumbled on the Bullroarer. A Mushroom of Hallucination and 2 Potion of Slowness were needed to defeated Bullroarer. Tough speedy guy. Then I had to kill the scorpion in melee and finally I got to the boulders and killed Wormy in bat form.

I got a Rod of Lightning Bolts from Wormy, Potion of Invisibility (lots of exp) and a scroll of recharging from the vault.

Here is the dump with all his spoil. I wonder whether a Rapier (1d9) (+4,+5) is better or a Vorpal Rapier (1d6) (+5,+4)?

A rapier 1d9 will deal average of 5 per attack (plus deadliness, of course). Vorpal Rapier does 3.5, but crits more often, which will make it deal 3d6 (or more) or around 10.5. I don't know the crit frequency though.

Ok, vorpal increases power by 50%, and you get a crit
if (randint(power + 200) <= (power - 20))
power is related to how good your attacking capability is. At high power, it'll increase crits by about 50%

Looks like this is going to be a long game for you. I hope you have fun.

Thanks for your help! I'll wear the Vorpal Rapier and see how often the criticals occur for me. I like it when it says "Your vorpal blade goes snicker-snack!" and a monster is dead in one blow. :)

I too hope this will be a long game :). But currently it is rather quick --- only 3 days, 1 hours, 40 minutes and 344 kills, but all uniques up to Wormy killed. All this including mana regeneration, long fights with fruit bats to pseudoidentify armor, teasing poisonous jellys to identify potions and mushrooms, endless looking for downstairs, etc.

What a stupid death!
Orfax was already at half health.
Too many ways to kill him, with such a plenty of skills --- before I could decide, how to kill him, I died. Even simple dousing off the light would have saved me, not to mention spells, boulders, rods, potions, scrolls...

I guess, next time I will not use the bat form, nor carry so many boulders, since they are so heavy and slow down gameplay. I will also try to recall from level 3 up and down to level 3 again. And I will play a human --- much harder, but good at all skills which fits the Jack of all trades theme very well. I will try to max all skills except Blood Dominion. No penalty to melee will help practicing all those weapons and martial arts.

On 11.11.2005 14:16 Bandobras wrote:
Humans are really hard to play a Jack of all Trades with, because they are not good enough in anything and you cannot raise a single skill too high, lest you fall prey to minimal skill costs. I have to renounce the custom of returing from the first quest by WOR and then going back down with WOR, because I do not pick up enough potions and mushrooms to confuse Bullroarer, who then owns me (on a quest level, of course).
