Wow... just finished killing the Serpent, and boy did it take some work. Used something like 40 healing potions. Hid the spectre in walls, beat up on the serpent until I was below half hps or there was distintegration, phased or teleported out, healed up... wash rinse, repeat.

I've done two boneheaded things in this game. I chalk both up to playing berserkers recently!

First, I've virtually ignored missile weapon combat. Second, I neglected to bring sources of destruction, genocide, etc. down to fight the Serpent. Realized this after using a bunch of healing potions, of course, and just decided to stick it out and teleport after the disintegration breath instead of waiting for the inevitable nasty summons that would follow.

On the other hand, this character is a winner and not even lvl 50 yet!

Spectres definitely have some cheasy tactics available -- throughout the game I've passed through a wall to hit a monster, stepped back behind the wall to heal, etc. This tactic allowed me to kill a lot of stuff while diving down to the lower levels that would have absolutely creamed me in a "fair fight." See., e.g., Cantoras. I'm still surprised he went as (relatively) smoothly as he did, particularly as he was on the same level as a few Hru (grr... Hru, hate 'em :-).

I didn't have any chaos resistance when doing the vapor quest, and later intentionally kept chaos resistance off sometimes when around weaker chaos breathers. Ended up keeping a mixed bag of middle-of-the road mutations, as I was paranoid about losing berserker rage when I got it. Absolutely amazing for the stick-and-move spectre strategy, as using the skill repeatedly will heal a character far faster than resting. The damage boost isn't shabby either when you can afford the drop in saving throw.

Now, there's an "alchemist" added to the game that's harder than the Serpent? If so, this character isn't ready to take him. Likewise, with no source of elemental immunity, unless I get lucky with a poison needle, the arena boss will mop the floor with me. I already tempted fate by going after the Shambler with no immunity, though my damage output and speed was fortunately enough to cut the Shambler's hps down a bit and make its breaths survivable.

Ah well, I'll explore a bit and see how long it takes me to get creamed by the new content!

(On the point of new content, this new cap is ridiculous! The boost in ac was immediately noticeable.)

No fair sneaking in a winner like that ;-)

Congratulations of course. I wholeheartedly agree with your take on both Spectres and the Berserk ability (my current Barbarian Ninja lives for this power ... its far more important to raise the poor damage output of the ninja, though).

And yes, you *should* be hoarding ?o*Destruction* the entire game for the final fight. Maybe 15 to 20 just to be safe.

Good Luck whacking the Mad Chemist and the GWoP!!!!!

Very nice work, congrats :)

Spectre "cheesy tactics" are often no different than ninja Hide in Mud or the craft spell Walk through Wall...it certainly makes some enemies easier, including Nodens and Richard Wong who you can fight inside the walls...

congratulations! hmm, I am obviously going to have to make the game more difficult for non-level-50 characters to win. I have an idea already...

Elliot, I leave my computer on, and tend not to quit out, so the abnormally large time indicates basically that I started the character that long ago, not that I played for that long!

I'm still not suer this character is going to take care of the GWoP and alchemist before that berserker ninja obliterates everything in sight -- that particular character seems to be shaping up quite nicely, while this character is at the mercy of the RNG producing enough healing for the alchemist (once found), RNG love for the GWoP or some immunity gear appearing, and my continuing to play... after the WINNER tag appearing I have less urge to play on.. purely psychological!

And oh, gosh, more difficult for non-lvl-50 characters to win? Did you see the screen shot of this character's hit points at one point after what I think was a double-move from the Serpent? (I attacked, hit escape to clear the message queue, and took a really deep breath).

Also, I suspect (though I tend not to play them) that a caster in Heng may really suffer if the solution is to make end bosses harder. Their overall damage output is in many cases much lower than their melee counterparts, and they have to rely on mana. Likewise, if trying to stay out of melee range of the Serpent, I'd expect the code would have the darn snake summoning even more friends, which really sounds quite gruesome.

I'm sure you have something suitably inventive (and fiendish) planned, however! I look forward to it!

You have won the game, but only killed 137 uniques? Thats only about half of them. Wow, that must have been one tough final battle, made doubly so by your lack of *Destruction*. You have certainly earned First Winner honors!

I'm having my doubts on the Arena as well. Ninjas have better odds then Warriors, that's for sure, but I'm hoping on Sauron dropping the One Ring for immunities ...

Good Luck!

he's not a *WINNER* until he retires alive :) pursuing the chemist will entail some risk.

as for my tweak for non-level-50 chars -- well, as long as the spellcasters level up to 50, they will have nothing to worry about! which casters usually do, anyway, for spell failure rates and more mana, etc. actually this thing I'm testing affects melee more adversely anyway...

I thought you said the chemist would involve risk? I just managed to kill the chemist without using a single health potion... or seeing any special attacks, for that matter. He was next to the Unicorn of Order, and the Unicorn just kept beating on him while I stood at a distance. I moved in and gave the chemist a love-tap, finishing the job, teleported away and waited for various beasts and the Unicorn to come after me, then came back in to pick up the loot... which included a source of lightning immunity.

Thank you, overaggressive Unicorn of Order! (shoot, did I just reveal another little player trick?)

argh! lucky bastard. having the unicorn and chemist go at it is the only way that was going to be an easy kill. darn. obviously, I am going to have to fix this little loophole. I wonder how they started fighting? both are "good" creatures.

I just released version 1.7.1, by the way.

Wow, it seems I just got this Chemist kill in before the buzzer. Off to download the newest changes and see what additional evil lies in store.

There's something about this that reminds me of early development of ToME -- I don't play it much at all, but if I remember correctly, early on I think every time someone won the game the dev asked for details, then tried to "fix" whatever method was used to actually win!

On 5.11.2005 04:26 elrosk@gmail.com wrote:
Well, the GWoP was sort of anticlamactic after all of that fear. I put on two needles, and after two rounds of combat, it was all over. Great variant; I look forward to continuing to play it with other characters!

Btw, how rare are the other "special" items besides the cap? I don't think I've heard of anyone finding anything other than the cap, though if I'm mistaken, I'd love to know.

On 5.11.2005 04:48 chriskousky@hotmail.com wrote:
Well, hats off to ya! The GWoP cleaned my clock in the arena, maybe I should have switched to the Poison Needles ... But I think my battle with the Chemist was more challenging than yours ;-)

On 5.11.2005 10:03 bcbarnes wrote:
well, congratulations on the trifecta. that is, you will complete is as soon as you retire as a *WINNER* -- in my book, you don't win until you retire. did you practice a lot with posion needles before taking on the GWoP? I figured, without lots of immunity and vampirism, that poison needles would be the only way you would become Champion of the Arena.

anyway, congrats. well-played. hopefully I can entice you to play more soon and often :)

nice mutation, by the way (intentionally gained by exposure to a chaos source?)...:
You are telepathic.

On 5.11.2005 21:20 elrosk@gmail.com wrote:
Here's the Winner dump. The telepathy mutation is kind of funny, as spectres already get telepathy at lvl 35. As noted above, I intentionally exposed the character to unresisted chaos against weak breathers throughout the game, though stopped doing this intentionally when I picked up berserk after realizing how powerful it was (note to others: if you choose to do this, be sure to keep nexus resist up, otherwise you will likely be in for an unpleasant surprise! Likewise, there are a number of ways in the game to remove unwanted mutations, so it's less risky than it might seem)

I didn't bother to train up skill in needles, as I was impatient and thought that all of the to-hit gear, plus native warrior melee skill, would be enough. Fortunately, I ended up being right.
